Face/Off arrived in theaters way back in 1997, and with John Woo at the helm and an all-star cast led by Nicolas Cage and John Travolta, the movie managed to strike a chord with moviegoers. A critical and commercial hit, it even managed to land an Oscar nomination (for "Best Effects, Sound Effects Editing," but still).
The very weird and very 90s plot as Travolta's FBI agent, Sean Archer, go undercover as Cage's villainous terrorist, Castor Troy. How did he pull that off? With advanced technology that allowed him to switch faces with the baddie, and as unique a premise as it may be, fans have spent years hoping some sort of follow-up could pick up with Archer and Troy again.
During a recent interview with Collider (via ActioNewz.com), Cage revealed the pitch he's heard for a Face/Off 2, but confirms talks didn't really go too far beyond that stage.
"I think Face/Off is a sequel that lends itself to a lot of twists and turns and unpredictability. It's almost like if you factor in the idea of offspring and Castor and Sean having children and these children grow up, then it becomes like three-dimensional chess."
"And then it's not just the two, John Travolta and myself, it's four of us ping-ponging and going at different levels, and it becomes even more complex," the legendary actor added. "I think there's a lot of fertile ground there. I had maybe one meeting in an office, but I haven't heard anything since, so I don't know."
We've heard a variety of updates over the years, with the latest being that Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard planned to helm a direct sequel back in 2021. He's since been busy with that kaiju franchise, of course, so it may just be a case now of making sure everyone's schedules align so the movie can finally become a reality.
