KNIVES OUT Spoiler-Free Review; "A Legitimate Contender For The Best Movie Of 2019"

Knives Out is now playing in theaters and with Rian Johnson (Star Wars: The Last Jedi) at the helm and an incredible cast made up of names like Ana de Armas and Chris Evans, this is a movie you can't miss!

When it comes to a classic "whodunnit," it's fair to say that reinventing the wheel (perhaps donut would be more apt in this case) is no easy task. After all, no matter how many clever twists and turns a movie that falls into that category delivers, the end result is almost always the same. There's a murder, a number of suspects, and then the big reveal. Knives Out, however, delivers something completely fresh and unexpected by turning everything we think we know about the genre on its head and, as a result, it's a legitimate contender for the best movie of 2019.

To go into what it is that makes Rian Johnson's first movie since he visited a Galaxy Far, Far Away so different would be to get into spoiler territory, but suffice to say that Knives Out will exceed and upend your expectations in almost every respect, and what follows is a thoroughly thrilling movie that boasts a terrific script and stellar direction. With an unbelievable ensemble cast, it's also a star studded affair without a single bad performance.

Daniel Craig's brilliant Southern drawl and sharp witted detective is excellent, but while his character stole the show in the trailers, the film actually belongs to Ana de Armas. She's a magnetic presence and as hard to tear your eyes away from as the compelling story that plays out on screen. Honestly, we could spend all day praising each individual cast member, but Chris Evans is perhaps most deserving of a special mention as he goes from playing America's Ass to an entitled one. He's spent so long suiting up as a superhero that it's easy to forget the other great characters he's brought to the screen over the years, and if Knives Out is any indication of what comes next for him, it's going to be a lot of fun following his post-MCU career.

Johnson is also responsible for penning the screenplay and it's great to see him tackle something completely original again after his contribution to Star Wars. With Knives Out, he's made perhaps his best movie to date, something that's no easy feat after The Last Jedi. This is an undeniable crowd pleaser with some big laughs and enough big twists to ensure that a second viewing is a must.

It's also a movie that feels extremely timely, and beyond its whodunnit elements, it has a lot to say about everything from the current state of America to the way the wealthy treat those beneath them. Johnson could have easily just stuck to blockbuster filmmaking after delivering a $1 billion Star Wars movie, but he's instead decided to take a risk with a project that asks a lot from its audience and his gamble clearly paid off based on those opening weekend numbers. With delightful visuals and perhaps the best monologue about donut holes you'll ever find, Knives Out is a must-see and a refreshing addition to both this genre and theaters in general, as original tales as amazing as this one become harder to find.

A classic yet still thoroughly original whodunnit, Knives Out is a movie of the year contender that makes great use of its incredible cast while keeping you guessing from start to finish.

It’s easily one of my favorites of the year. And next to Endgame, it has my favorite final shot of any movie this year.

It was pretty good. I’d give it an B+. Movie of the year is Uncut Gems though for me.

Knives Out just further confirms how insane and DOUCHEY these rich folks are lol.

Saw it yesterday and it was a blast from start to finish.

I thought the movie was going in one direction and then it started to pull some surprises. It’s a very well constructed mystery.

The movie is also funny as hell. Lots of big laughs. Ana de Armas really shines in this movie. It may an ensemble movie but as the story unfolds, she becomes the protagonist and the star of the movie in the process.

As for the movie’s Awards potential, I sadly think it’s slim. I can see it doing well in the Golden Globes but I’m not so sure about the Oscars. Armas deserves a nomination and I think it could get some recognition for Production Design and Screenwriting.

@MovieMonster - The script is astounding. It definitely deserves some award recognition for that.

Honestly one of my favorite movies... Ever. Like, it was just such a fun, smart movie. And I can tell that it's gonna have some serious rewatch value.

Oh and...

Always nice to have a gorgeous lead who can actually act.

I gave it 8 / 10 Stars but I guessed who it was pretty early. Felt like like movie was written that way. Oscar didn't pop in my mind.

Quite literally everything I've seen Johnson touch has turned out to be a masterpiece, and I almost want to say Knives Out is his best. Looper and TLJ are probably my favorites, but this dude really made a movie that had my whole theater eating out of his palm and it's mostly just assholes being assholes to one another in a constant cycling of the same moments from different perspectives.

The LAYERS in this movie are absolutely ridiculous, and the way the script seeds little things via shots, off-hand lines and subtle references only for ALL of them to pay off in a super satisfying way really made this shoot up my favorite movies list. I immediately wanted to go back and watch it again.

The movie to me was good, not great. I think that I'm just not all for who-done-its, and this movie tried to be clever, but ended up just reverting back to that original who-done-it style.

Unfortunately didn't crack my top 10, which is nothing to be disappointed by tbh, many great movies I loved won't be there, this was just a stacked year, and with:

Uncut Gems
Star Wars
Cats
Richard Jewell
and Just Mercy, it still aint over

Will also say, I saw it with 4 other friends, and they all loved and gushed over it, so I'm not the end all on this one in particular

I’ll rent this eventually. The Irishman is my favorite movie of the year. It’s not as good as Goodfellas, but that’s nearly impossible. It’s on par with Casino and The Departed.
