Sherlock Holmes 3 is set to be released on December 22, 2021, but with no sign of production beginning on the film, it's looking increasingly unlikely that the movie will make that date. Robert Downey Jr. and his producing partner and wife, Susan Downey, recently shared an interest in creating a Sherlock "universe," but those plans could be on hold if these comments are any indication.
Aladdin helmer Guy Ritchie directed the first two Sherlock Holmes films, but he's now handed the reigns over to Rocketman filmmaker Director Fletcher.
Little is known about the plot beyond it taking place partly in Old West San Francisco, and that it's undergone several rewrites. Talking on on the Celebrity Catch Up podcast (via Screen Rant), Fletcher confirmed the sequel that's been nearly a decade in the making is on hold thanks to COVID.
According to the director, Sherlock Holmes 3 is "sitting on the back burner at the moment until it becomes clear where the world is at." Clearly, it's not a priority for Warner Bros. in the current climate, and it could be a hard film to shoot given the current restrictions on filming and locations being off-limits.
The next Sherlock Holmes film is probabaly going to happen, but when we see it is, appropriately, a mystery.
