There's Still Hope For The Lone Ranger; Movie May Be Close To Getting The Green Light!

Since Deadline first revealed that The Lone Ranger had been placed on hold due to budgetary concerns, it was commonly believed that the only way Disney would give the movie the green light was if director Gore Verbinski could bring the whopping budget down. You see, they didn't want to risk spending up to $275 million after the less than great performance of this summers Cowboys & Aliens showed that the genre may not be all that popular with audiences, despite the inclusion of an A-List cast. The recent news that Johnny Depp would drop out of the director left the project surely put some pressure on the studio.

However, Mike Fleming is now reporting that, "insiders tell me that things are starting to look up for the film and there is now optimism that the picture might actually get made." He also reveals that Bruckheimer, Depp and Verbinski have all made "salary concessions" in order to help the film get made, with the budget now said to be closer to $215 million, despite the fact that Disney are hoping to shave another $15 million from that. The report finishes optimistically with, "We should have an answer shortly, but don’t be surprised if The Lone Ranger rides again."

I'm puzzled like Grif as to why a Western would need $200+ Million budget.

This movie shouldn't be made.

That's a huge budget for a western. They need to ditch the whole sci/fi element and just make it an action/adventure western.. simple as that!

@ManOfKrypton and Grif its because the have to insure that any animals on set are properly taken care of along with the insurance going up for the guns even though they shoot blanks they can still kill we've seen this before not to mention the sets and costumes and shooting on locations cost also hauling everything out to the location where the filming will take place.

$215 million for a western?
What, are they filming it on Mars?!

Men. Horses. Sand.

How much money are they intending to spend on blank rounds and explosion?

It's a dumb-ass cowboy movie for goodness' sake, Does it really need to cost over 200 million dollars to make a film involving, basically, men, horses and sand?

Are Jerry Bruckheimer or Roland Emmerich involved?

Shit. If I was based in Arizona, I could make this film for peanuts!

Maybe the studio needs to import the sand, tumbleweeds , cacti and sage brush form China, like we do everything else.

All they have to do is put Depp's name on every advertisement and it'll sell.

If the studio is serious about making a quality Western, it should play out with the same mood and grit as 'Tombstone'. I'd drop $10 on that.

They don't need that type of money for the crap that insurance needs and that sh*7, it was for salary and the effects that Verbinski wants to put into the film. Screw this film it trashes the original Lone Ranger mythos if any of the stuff that has been posted is authentic. Plus I'm so tired of Depp being upstaging the story line of the films he is in.

Wes Studi would be great as Tonto, other actors i'd love to see rounding out the supporting cast and cameos would be Danny Trejo, Clint Eastwood, Jeff Bridges, and Harrison Ford!
