Despite recently reiterating his disdain for superhero movies, it seems legendary director Francis Ford Coppola (The Godfather, Bram Stoker's Dracula) is a fan of The Merc With a Mouth!

Legendary director Francis Ford Coppola (The Godfather, Apocalypse Now) has taken several shots at superhero/comic book movies in the past, and more recently singled out the rise in superhero "prototype" cinema as a major factor in studios being hesitant to take a risk on lesser-known or non IP-based features.

“There used to be studio films. Now there are Marvel pictures. And what is a Marvel picture? A Marvel picture is one prototype movie that is made over and over and over and over and over again to look different,” said the filmmaker during an interview with GQ earlier this year.

Despite Coppola's clear disdain for "despicable" superhero films, it seems he is a fan of a certain Merc With a Mouth! "I liked Deadpool, I thought that was amazing," the director told Variety.

Wade Wilson actor Ryan Reynolds responded with the following Tweet.

Although Deadpool does fall back on formula to some extent (particularly in its final act), the Merc With a Mouth's first big-screen outing cleverly subverts a lot of the tropes associated with the genre, which may be why Coppola found it more appealing.

Francis Ford Coppola is (finally) set to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame today, almost 50 years to the day The Godfather hit theaters.

Good, can we finally put that myth to rest that the older legends of Hollywood just say these things for clout reasons? The vast majority of these filmmakers don't even have social media so how are they even going to know what's controversial to the Twitterverse. They're just speaking their mind on the state of films, nothing more, nothing less (which they have the right to do so, as they've clearly made movies that have stood the test of time).
McMurdo
McMurdo - 3/21/2022, 11:20 AM
@JesseCuster - it's always been about "The prototype" for these filmmakers. Never been out of spite, all about authorship.

@JesseCuster - you only have a right to an opinion if you’ve made a movie that stood the test of time?
JesseCuster
JesseCuster - 3/21/2022, 12:03 PM
@MyCoolYoung - No, but if you have a credibility that's pretty rock solid when you've made Hollywood defining films like The Godfather and Apocalypse Now.
MyCoolYoung
MyCoolYoung - 3/21/2022, 12:07 PM
@JesseCuster - credibility is relative. If his thoughts don’t match my own they don’t hold weight for me. I don’t even like The Godfather. Never been into mafia nor gangsta movies. Haven’t seen apocalypse now though
JesseCuster
JesseCuster - 3/21/2022, 12:14 PM
@MyCoolYoung - Well that's your opinion but despite your contrarian view, The Godfather has done more for cinema than anything that Marvel has released and that's not me shitting on Marvel, that's just a fact of the matter. And if you haven't seen it, I'm sure Apocalypse Now is streaming somewhere. It's a masterpiece, which like the Godfather, also left it's stamp on Hollywood history.
MyCoolYoung
MyCoolYoung - 3/21/2022, 12:45 PM
@JesseCuster - and I'm not denying anything the godfather has done for cinema I just don't watch those types of movies. When I was 5 a 7 year old friend of mine was killed across the street from my house in front of me and the whole block because of gangstas so I don't partake in those movies.

But also what it did for cinema then doesn't mean it's still doing it now. Spider-Man just made a lot of money during a time movies weren't making much what is that doing for cinema?

JesseCuster - 3/21/2022, 12:57 PM
@MyCoolYoung - First off, sorry that happened. Second off, You're comparing apples and oranges. Spider-Man and Batman are doing things well for movies in terms of the FINANCIAL side, but as much as I like both movies, neither of those movies are culture-defining experiences on the cinematic landscape. They're not what you would call a film masterpiece. A movie like The Godfather comes once in a lifetime, but Spider-Man and Batman will always be around in one form or another. You're comparing a film that's briefly helped out Hollywood get up from a monetary slump (though movies are still not doing as well as they were pre-pandemic by and large, hence the continued up-tick in streaming offerings) to a movie that has inspired and continues to inspire the quality and story-beats of movies that you like without you even knowing. What Spider-Man is "doing for cinema" is putting a dollar-sign band-aid on a pandemic-sized bullet womb. Does that make any sense? And I'm not asking that sarcastically either.

@JesseCuster - Exactly. It's so embarrassing to see fellow fans trashing icons like Scorsese, Coppola or Villeneuve for not liking some movies we like and being concerned about changes in their industry. Like, these are some of the greatest film-makers ever and people on here were literally calling them "hacks" because they didn't think Ant-man was "high cinema."
JesseCuster
JesseCuster - 3/21/2022, 1:07 PM
@SerKurtWagner - Seriously lol. These are people who literally have crafted some of the most magnificent pieces of cinema and have changed the game time and time over. But because they're outwardly concerned about the artform being exploited in an overly capitalistic commodification of movies that's been pioneered by Marvel/Disney, they're villains. Ant-Man, Ant-Man 2, Eternals, and so on and so forth doesn't even compare to a quarter of the filmography of these individuals.

@TheDoctor1225 - True maybe franchise wasn't the best word for it but I do still feel like my (and a lot of the mainstream GA) excitement for further sequels went down after DP2 came out, which is pretty wild considering how good the first one was (people forget that it was at one point the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever lol).

The first Deadpool is pretty great tbf.

Wish they had kept Tim Miller for the sequel tho, I feel like the franchise hasn't been the same since imo.
