Comics Continuum's Kate Jewell recently interviewed Warner Brothers Animation supervising producer Alan Burnett where they discussed the reasons behind DC's push to feature a wide array of characters in the animated medium. He also disclosed a few bits of info regarding future projects in the DC animated universe:

"We decided to do the [DC showcase] shorts because we were tired of talking, as bonus material, and people have seen up talk about how we make these things forever so we feel like why don't we do another animated cartoon. Why don't we feature secondary DC characters who haven't' gotten their own long form cartoon yet. So that's how the showcase idea started."

"Three of them will be 10 minutes long and another one will be 22 minutes long. The Spectre, Jonah Hex and Green Arrow and the other one. . . we'll save for later."

Make sure to check out the video and visit ComicContinuum.com for more information about DC's animated shorts The Spectre and Jonah Hex.

Meh. Green arrow always comes across to me as a combination of a cartoony Batman and DC's answer to Marvel's Hawkeye.I guess it's cause I'm not that familiar with the DC mythos. Someone explain to me why he's cool.

Jusme6 - GA is (imo) more anti-hero, robin hoodish than Hawkeye. Very politcal minded but yet caring about the little guy. He doesn't mind doing what it takes to get the job done. I have only read a few Hawkeye comics so I can't speak straight to the comparison. I just like GA's attitude and his interactions more with the DC characters, again just my opinion.

Wow! Green Arrow is getting his on animated short. Wow ... I could really care less. Bring back the JLA and forget about Green Arrow. To me, he is a interesting as Blue Beetle and Booster Gold. They work great as supporting characters, but anything over 5 mins is boring. I'd rather watch Plastic man or even lame ass Aquaman than this guy.

My guess is that hex will be the long one in order to try and build some buzz for his movie.

As for the unknown hero, my hope is for a Question feature. I know he had a few spots on the JLU cartoon, but I want to see more.

Ummm...am I ever going to get a Flash movie? I'm getting a little depressed on the hope of seeing one. They've done GL and WW. Could Flash be "the other one"?

jusme6: Hawkeye is my all time favorite character but Green Arrow came first. He is no Clint Barton rip off. If anything its the other way arround.
They are very similar, if anything GA may be considered a little more "hippyish" if you will. He acts as a conscience when everyone else is getting carried away with whatever the situation happens to be.
Hawkeye is more rash and prone to get carried away with the situation all by his lonesome.
They both have the same skills with the same amount of smartass.
GA is my favorite DC hero.

have to agree with InstigatorGirl on that one, DC and Marvel animated features just look odd in anime. I like anime, but just not my super heroes

I think Vixen would be a better short also. I would rather see Dr. Fate, Captain Marvel, Hawkman or Flash than Green Arrow. I've read a few of his comics and I simply think the character lacks depth. We are talking about the guy who shoots a Boxing Glove arrow right? Is that the one? Anyway, I think he works in a team atmosphere but not solo. Clearly some of you disagree and that's cool. We're entitled to our opinions.

@ Xmutantantx - did I touch a nerve?

Sigmax - 2/11/2010, 11:57 AM
@ McLovin, A Hawkman would be good as well. With the friction that Hawkman and GA have with one another they would make a good team up one as well.

we see enough of green arrow in "brave and bold" & smalleville.
McLovin
McLovin - 2/11/2010, 12:04 PM
@Sigmax - I'd watch that. The two make a good team up cause they hate each other. That could be fun to watch. I can't remember what it was called, but the only books I enjoyed of GA, was the one where he wore a hood instead of the funny Robin Hood hat, and instead of boxing gloves, he shot real arrows. I remember that book being quite violent and that was the 1st (and only) time I saw GA as a bad ass. No disrespect to GA lovers out there (some folks are sensitive).

I'd have to agree with you. Of the plethora of DC characters, Arrow may be the least relevant. His political philosophy actually hold more weight than his position as fighter for justice. His political position provides good counter-dialogue but that's it. For me, he holds as much water as Plastic Man. If he was agressive as the last Rambo movie, I'd be interested. But in a world of automatic weapons, I don't understand him or his relevance.
McLovin
McLovin - 2/11/2010, 12:22 PM
@Phinehas
And Plastic-man at least provides comic relief. Give us a direct to video Flash animated movie and I'd be mush happier. Dr. Fate too. He is way over due for some recognition.
@Sigma
Quiver series you say? Hmmm, that sounds vaguely familiar. Is that the one where there was this Asian chick with a huge dragon tattoo? She was also a bad as archer and that is about all I remember.
Sigmax
Sigmax - 2/11/2010, 12:24 PM
@Phinehas, the same could be said for Batman, in an age of super powers what relevance does he have. I think GA's relevance comes in the fact that he has no power, he is just a guy with a bow and sharp wit trying to do good in the world.
Sigmax
Sigmax - 2/11/2010, 12:25 PM
@Mclovin, that was the Longbow series if I remember right, the Quiver series was the newer one were the Spectre/GL brought him back from the dead.
Phinehas
Phinehas - 2/11/2010, 12:29 PM
I can see what your saying, Sigmax, but Batman has other elements behind him(stealth, superior intellect, mastery of close combat, and the ability to instill fear in evil-doers) including a cult following that would dwarf anything Arrow brings to the table.
Arrow's wit is what I referenced, but I don't see it carrying a movie without grit.
In the end, we'll just have to disagree because it just comes down to perception. I could be dead wrong, I can admit that.
McLovin
McLovin - 2/11/2010, 12:31 PM
@Sigmax - YES! That's the one! I had to google the image to be sure, but that is definitely the one I was making reference to. I actually enjoyed that book and thought that it gave it a mature and realistic tone to the character. I mean the guy already has enough of a disadvantage by choosing a bow and arrow as his choice of weapon, but then you give him bolas, giant nets and a freaking boxing glove? Seriously?

depending on the response from these shorts will some of these characters might get a full length aanimated film.
If Jonah Hex gets an animated film it should be from the graphic novel that's comming out March 10th.
"NO WAY BACK"
That small period of Lansdale mini-series he did of Jonah Hex seems to put in every ones mind that Jonah is a supernatural western it's not in fact the only time Jonah had to deal with the supernatural is when he encountered EL-Diablo now that character alone deserves an animated short for sure
Shaman
Shaman - 2/11/2010, 12:35 PM
Xmutantantx- The Question would kick mega ass!!! As would The Shadow ;) But if i go with what they might be going for... popular secondary characters, Powergirl seems like a sure bet. Flash will get his whole feature so it won't be a short. Hawkman could be getting a short, booster gold as well. There are hundreds that qualify here. I'd say The Question and Powergirl for the shorts.

Phinehas- Perfect comment right there. He's better in a supporting role. But a short is only a short. As long as they don't full feature with him before more important characters, i'm fine with it.

green arrow is a left wing communist. i can do without his cartoon.
Sigmax
Sigmax - 2/11/2010, 12:49 PM
@Phineas - well since GA's little holiday get away on the island, he took down Deathstroke single handedly and with a sword, I don't think he is as one dimensional (bow only) as he used to be. i would have liked them to continue his series as a solo work rather than dumping the blonde bimbo Canary in it, but thats my opinion.
