Mark Hamill Reflects On Portraying The Joker Longer Than Anyone Else

On camera for a new Joker-centric 'DC Universe Online' DLC, Luke Skywalker himself reflects on his long career voicing the joker. Plus, Adam Baldwin as Superman and Arleen Sorkin as Harley Quinn.

Speaking to MTV about 'The Last Laugh'," a new DLC for "DC Universe Online"actor Mark Hamill shared a few insights into his lengthy time as the Joker. He stated that the "Joker is one of the greatest character roles of all-time" and that he has enormous respect for fellow vocal thespian, Arleen Sorkin, the voice behind Harley Quinn. Debuting on Batman: The Animated Series, Quinn was originally pegged to simply be a background Joker henchman before Sorkin impressed with a standout interpretation of the character. Hamill goes on to state that "the Joker is one of the happiest experiences of his professional career" and that "he's had more screentime as the Joker than any other actor, including Cesar Romero from the 60's television series."

How do you guys feel, is he your favorite interpretation of the Joker? He's certainly near the top on my list.

Nomis, i agree but he could only do the best with what was given to him. That joker wasnt written to be that thratening. I feel the quintessential dark sadistic joker was in the return of the joker flashback and he brought his A game. If only they could have gotten away with that dark tone in the weekly series'.

@Nomis - Surpirsed you havent seen Return of the joker, essential viewing. Yeah its Batman Beyond. I would love a mature animated batman series, you could actually have joke kill, have batman get shot batgirl crippled etc but they wouldnt take the risk of alienating their younger audience instead we're getting beware the batman that i'll give a chance too but im not a fan of the character designs.

His work has been incredible, from BTAS to DC Universe online. No better Joker exists.

Mark Hamill was the best cartoonish/clownlike interpretation of the Joker. But Heath Ledger will always be the best, because he brought a fresh original new take on the character (rather then rehashing performances) that revolutionized the character. When someone mentions Joker I always ask, "Which Joker? Heath Ledger or Joker?"

HAhahah the internet age is so prone to hyperbole. "Best ever, best ever." People are so eager to rank everything. Have your favorites, but I have a hard time seeing the fairness in comparing Jack and Heath's Joker performances when they are such different takes on the character.

That said he truly made me fall in love with the character. The episode 'Almost got em' is far and away my favorite Joker performance anywhere in any medium.

@Nomis I would like a series in the under the red hood continuety. Its brings me back to a problem i have with some of the animated movies DC put out now. Some of them are so great either animatoin cast or storywise that i feel like these aspects are wasted on 70 min movies. For example Justice league doom, the ending leads to more adventures but as they only adapt parts of arcs they donlead to nowhere. Why adapt flashpoint for example if im opinion their wont be films based on the new 52 afterwards. Batman year one but no long haloween. Chronicle significant parts of the characters journey rather than take chunks that lead to nowhere.

Back on topic. My favourite jokers are Heath Ledger, Di maggio and Hamill mostly in return of the joker, mask of he phantasm and worlds finest. I actually dont have the patience to watch the whole of 89 batman.

When did Mark Hamil become the emperor from Return of the Jedi? Yikes, that is a scary picture.

However, he does do an awesome joker.

A HBO hardcore Batman cartoon would be incredible. They could do so much with it. DC needs to make that happen

Hamill was great but Tim Curry would have been better. He was originally casted but couldnt hold the "voice"for too long. Any body who has seen 'It' with Tim Curry knows the potential.

I liked Mark Hamill as the Joker a lot, kind of hard not to but again not really a fan of comparing Joker interpretations, each worked for there own world that they were inhabiting.

@IgnurRant - Dude now that is creepy. Tim Curry was also in the running for playing the live action Joker but Nicholson got it. He is no Mark Hamil tho Mark Hamill's Joker is pure evil yet he makes you laugh.

Maybe they'll get Curry for The Dark Knight Returns part 2 or another DC animated movie.

For everybody that said that Hamill's TAS Joker wasn't sadistic enough, go play Arkham Asylum and Arkham City.

2 of the best games ever with some of the best voice acting to go with it.

@IgnurRant, those clips are just dialog from Stephen King's IT over lapped with a Batman TAS clip. While creepy it's not Curry's actual work for Batman TAS, I'm not sure if those have ever been released or even still exist.
