Still Hope For YOUNG JUSTICE?

Young Justice voice actors Khary Payton, Phil Lamarr and Dee Bradley Baker were joined by show producer and writer Greg Weisman at Denver Comic Con this past weekend. A few secrets were withheld in hopes of more episodes.

Attending Denver Comic Con this past weekend were a few superhero animation stalwarts of recent Young Justice fame Payton, Lamarr, Baker and Weisman. The panel started off discussing Teen Titans Go! but that notion was loudly booed by the audience. Speaking on Young Justice's cancellation, Payton expressed dismay stating that he was looking forward to voicing the New God terror, Darkseid. Speaking on fan angst over the show's ending, Weisman stated that Young Justice didn't end on the text book definition of a cliffhanger as the show ended with the main threat of The Light and The Reach dealt with. However, Weisman declined to discuss any intended future storylines out of hopes that the show could be revived. He specifically declined to discuss the fate of Wally West stating that would be a "spoiler."

As far as helping bring the show back, Weisman stated that fans needed to support the MERCHANDISE particularly the trade of the tie-in comic book, the upcoming video game Young Justice: Legacy and the official soundtrack to the series. "Honestly, they don't care if no one watches the show as long as the toys sell," echoed Lamarr.

Fans may remember that crowdfund upstart SMGO.TV launched a campaign to save Young Justice through fan funding and they've managed to collect $37.5k thus far with 61 days left in their campaign. However, unlike KickStarter, there's no target goal listed for just how much is needed to guarantee another season.

If they want us to support the merch, give us something worth supporting! Both seasons on Blu-Ray or DVD, a game that doesn't look like it was made in the early 2000s. This really isn't rocket science.

Let it end.

It started to decline after the awesome premiere but went down after season one when the team dynamic just radically shifted.

Time jumps to the future, a bunch of new characters a lot of which were either just window dressing or had one line (Did Wonder or Bat Girl even need to be there?), tons of unresolved/dangling plot threads (that had a speedy resolution in the finale with the "we knew, you knew, that we knew" garbage), and a silly drawn out 'Reach' arc that wasn't interesting and highly predictable.

It was just kind of all over the place and then quickly closed up with exposition at the end.

Was the artwork slick and were the fights cool? Was it awesome to see these characters in an animated series?

Yes.

However since most of the characters were seen not heard, it really made no difference. It lost focus and it needed to end.

Just my opinion.

Khary Payton as Darkseid would have been very interesting! Either way, I'd rather see him reprise his role of Aqualad as opposed to Cyborg...

@omnivium, I'ts not rocket science, but it is business. I work as a designer in the animation industry and let me tell you, it's not easy at all. The amount of time and money it takes to make something as high quality as YJ is incredible and when you blow a production budget on making something visually that good, merch sometimes is an after thought, but still a need to make money.

Toys aren't as cool as they were in the 90s because the market has changed and kids don't care about action figures like we did. But still, they have to sell things to continue making more. If I like a show, even if I don't care for the merch, I try to contribute because as a production worker, I know what goes into it and if I want to see the production continue, money has to come in or else the studio will cut it.

Remember, the studios aren't run by artists anymore, they are run by suits who care about the bottom line. Investors want their money back, that's what they care about. If they don't see the return, they will shut the project down.

No matter what, if we want shows like these to say on, we HAVE to support them. Another things is the fact that people stream them and not watch them live so they get less ratings in via TV than they should. If I stream a show that I love, I buy the season on DVD so that I've done my part. You gotta support the shows you love, or else they'll get shut down.

Oh! I should also say that shows are usually only commissioned for 2 seasons now. After that, they either go with a new show or take the show in a different story/design direction so that it's always fresh. Hence a show like Ben 10 that is one of Cartoon Network's cash cows keeps coming back with new incarnations. They last for 2 seasons, they shut them down, re vamp the franchise and make new merch. It's a way to say relevant and fresh with their 6-11 market, which is the market that cartoons are generally targeted toward.

i'd personally bring it back on a different channel. CN clearly didn't appreciate it's value to an older buying market.

Even with the time shift the show was still great because they continued to have great stories for all the episodes. But YJ needs an hour each episode because all of their characters are great and all need to shine just like the Justice League Unlimited.

I was planning to buy the Young Justice video game anyway.

@ Indigobolt956,

In a weird, round about way they did if you consider the DC Multiverse. DC Comics actually designed Young Justice as Earth 16 and the DCAU as Earth 12. Of course, this was pre-Flashpoint. The entire history of the universe was rewritten by Pandora so that the DCU, the DC Vertigo characters, Wildstorm, etc. all had a shared history rather than existed as parallel realities.

As such, I'm pretty sure the old post-Infinite Crisis 52 Earth multiverse as it stood before Flashpoint might be out. Seeing as James Robinson's Earth 2 doesn't resemble the "new" Earth 2 depicted in JSA after Infinite Crisis, I think it's pretty much a done deal.

It's kind of sad actually, as Kingdom Come, The Dark Knight Returns, Gotham By Gaslight and various other Elseworlds actually had a place in the expanded DCU and weren't just hypothetical.

But I can understand what he means and it'd be kind of counterproductive, as a Post-"Animated" Flashpoint reboot of YJ would mean the pre-Flashpoint YJ never happened and wouldn't serve a new show anyhow.

I would have preferred a JL series with the YJ animation. It probably would have sold more because people care more about the main heroes than their sidekicks.

Yeah I was at that panel and it was very interesting to hear the whole story more or less. Especially the whole reality and reasons as to why the show was cancelled. I still remain optimistic, but at this rate it does seem rather grim unfortunately when it comes to the shows future. It was funny booing Khary Payton though about the whole Teen Titans Go show :D hahaha!

@TruthNoFodder, the target goal is $10 million for one season of Young Justice. It is explained in a letter that was written to by the folks at SMGO.tv and is posted on their website.

Furthermore, I call BS on your claim that the producers said to buy the paraphernalia to bring the show back. If that were the case, then that stuff should have been ready before the show started (I seriously doubt that they make $10 million on the tie-in comic books either). Television Networks like Cartoon Network make their money primarily through contracts with distribution affiliates who offer the programing to subscribers and through the sale of advertising. If a show does not get good ratings then advertisers will not pay the asking price to advertise in that time slot and, hence the show will get canceled and replaced by one that will. It is ludicrous to say that they do not care if no one watches the show since advertisers would obviously shy away from the network due to poor ratings and heads at the network would roll.

So basically buy the merchandise and we'll bring back the show.Yeah that's not going to happen there is no way enough people will buy even half those product they put out. They don't advertise the stuff.

Personally I'd like to see it back, this teen titan go is the biggest bunch of crap out there! This merchandise excuse is just that! Do they honestly think someone will buy that crap! So no that's not the issue. It all comes down to dollars; more to pay all the animators that did YJ instead of paying some high school kid who is doing the animation for TTG which is a steamy pile of S H I T!!!

Great show that deserved at least one more season. The whole merchandise/toy thing?...eh...idk know about that, I have two godsons both 5 and 6 and they're waaaaay more into playing PS3, WiiU and their parents Iphones than playing with actual toys. I didn't think toys/action figures had huge sales nowadays anyways (outside of collector figures, which aren't made for kids anyways). In the 90's this kind of merchandise not selling excuse could fly, but today the videogame industry is dominate and most small children are playing their parents iphones and gameboys or even full-on consoles.......I'm not in the industry or anything, but this excuse is kind of weaksauce imo

Shows like YJ and GLTAS need to be on a different network as they are geared to an older audience than CN target audience. With the library of animation that DC/WB have they should just use the CW or start an all animation channel.

To me, I think Wally's " death " couldve been a kick off to a sort of Flashpoint storyline. They could've had the main story of heroes dealing with Darksied while wally is in the alternate dimension trying to get back home to his friends, family and Artemis.

Obviously, They should make merchandise more for adults or teenagers instead of children action figures and toys . Besides, You can't frickin' run somebody into buying your products while they're supporting the show . Hell yeah, I'll buy the game and support petitions for a Season 3 . But, no . Cartoon Network does not deserve to keep the show, Nickelodeon is probably the only show that keeps dramatic TV series . Other words, Nickelodeon is the only " kid " show that shows a bit more intense stuff now . Cartoon Network is pure stupidity and accepts crap like, Johnny Test, Incredible Crew, Gumball, etc . I adore, Adventure Time, Young Justice, Total Drama, and an okay person with Regular Show . The only reason why Cartoon Network is still alive is because of Adventure Time . And, I do believe a second chance of Young Justice, I do inspect more of it .
