The Wonder Woman Animated Movie was absolutely Amazing!! It truly surpassed my expectations. Of course, coming from a big Wonder Fan like myself, you might say I have a biased opinion and would automatically give any WW feature my thumbs up. But this one is truly amazing because it thrilled and touched the hearts of both fans and casual animation/comicbook enthusiasts alike.

For years, many have made statements about how difficult it is to 'figure out' Wonder Woman because of the paradox of her being a 'peaceful warrior' and because her origin and motivations are not as 'clear cut as Superman & Batman' and that because of this, she's 'hard to figure out.' Well, cast that theory and all doubt out the window because this is the best Wonder Woman story outside of Comics and the live action tv version with out beloved Lynda Carter. As a matter of fact, many Fans and Non Fans (or should I say "recently converted into fans") of WW even say that the proposed live action movie should use this Animated one as its template ot springboard for ideas on how to approach her for the big screen.

For those who have not seen the WW Animated DVD yet, please do not continue reading this article if you want to be surprised by the movie. For the rest of you, I would like to share what I consider the finest elements in the movie:

The Original Powers: Yes, I noticed that she does not fly in the movie and this goes against the Post-Crisis on Infinite Earths reboot by the Great George Perez. But having been a fan of Lynda Carter's TV series as well as the golden age Wonder Woman comics, I am accustomed to the non-flying version. As a matter of fact (if I remember correctly), George Perez upgraded Diana's Silver Age era ability of "Gliding on the air currents" to full power of flight because he did not want to use the Invisible Jet. That's right folks. When George rebooted Wonder Woman in 1987, he conceptualized the version of the Amazons that did NOT possess any modern technology. His approach was to give Wonder Woman more of a fantasy feel as opposed to being a traditional super-hero and substituted the Invisible Jet for true 'power of flight'.

But since the Animated movie is utilized the Invisible Jet, using Wonder Woman's original powers were the way to go with this treatment. And its not really a bad thing. Besides, the power of flight (or to glide on the air currents) can always be added in the future should there be a sequel. Because as much as I love the current comics version which began with Perez' treatment...there are aspects that did not quite work for me when issue # 1 came out in 1987.

In the Perez version, Diana already possessed powers greater than any Amazon from birth. So when she joined the contest, I was bothered by the implication that Diana had all the advaantages because she was born a 'super-Amazon' as opposed to the Marston original who was a child prodigy who improved by leaps and bounds through Amazon training. Plus, in the Perez reboot, there was no "tie" between Diana and another Amazon which had to be broken by "Bullets & Bracelets". Instead, Philippus tested the gun on Diana and she deflected all the bullets herself (which tells me she's the only one with that ability and no other Amazon had the speed to do it)

Fortunately, Marston's original concept was integrated in this movie version which added an extra level of excitement. In Marston's original (which was also pointed out in Michael Fleischer's Encyclopedia of Comicbook Heroes Vol. 2: WONDER WOMAN)and I'm paraphrasing here: Although Wonder Woman is a champion among the Amazons, her power is on the same order as theirs. This is why in the Original WW comics, 'bullets & bracelets' tested the mettle of 2 Amazons. In the WW Animated DVD, this concept was restored.

As far as the Invisible Jet, I realize that the writers did not want to stray from the main focus of the story which is why they skipped the explanation of where the Invisible Jet came from. But it was gratifying to know during a subsequent interview that the DVD's version of the Jet is still based on one from current comics continuity- it's of Lansinarian technology (which is a product of alien technology).

But more importantly, the movie succeeds in its storyline, dialogue, action (where all the fight choreography is storyboarded so nicely) and the incredible chemistry between the voice actorsand their flawless delivery of their lines: Keri Russell, Nathan Fillion, Rosario Dawson, Virginia Madsen, Alfred Molina and the rest.

Having been a Wonder Woman Fan for all these years, I have come to appreciate the different versions of the character. I definitely have my favorite eras but I remain appreciative of the other takes as well. More importantly, this movie isn't just about action and pageantry but it's also about the very qualities the character has that makes her Wonder Woman- that she serves as a bridge between Themyscira and Patriarch's World, between the gods and humans, between Women and Men and how embracing unity, peace, communication and understanding brings greatness to humanity and meaning to her title.

TWO THUMBS DOWN!

Finally I got to see the movie & I cannot even begin to tell you how disappointed I am with this movie.

Here are some things that bothered me:

1) Ares, god of war, tolerated no one who stood in his way. He convinced Heracles, also the son of Zeus, to lead an army of men together with his brother Theseus to make war on the Amazons. The Queen wanted peace but Heracles drugged her & stole the Girdle of Gae (also one of the 12 labors he had to do). Without it's protection the Amazons were defenseless against him and his men. But the goddess Athena helped the Queen escape and she rallied the Amazons to defeat Heracles and his men. In the movie it was Ares attacking.

2) The Amazons storming the beach front coming to the aide of Wonder Woman?...WTF is that? Are you kidding me? SO unrealistic. Are you telling me there was no one who can view U.S. airspace was being violated PRIOR to them touching U.S. soil & the US didnt do anything but scratch their head & wonder at it without sending out any "escorts" to "greet" them? Not one F-14? And the president remained in residence in instead of following protocol & being relocated to safety? BS. I know it's just a comic but give me a break! It's not the adventures of Alice in Wonder Land!!!

They could have at least, to save face, had Steve lead the "escort" & advise them that there were friendlies mixed with hostiles..that would have been more reasonable.

Oh! And when Ares raised the army of dead Amazons of past how did they appear in Washington DC? They died on Paradise Island! A little consistency wouldnt go unnoticed.

3) Steve Trevor was such an ASSS... Wonder WOman may have had moments when she despaired that men were corrupt but she NEVER experienced any negativity with him. He always remained true to form. He never disappointed her or caused her a moments pause in his character hence her softness she had towards him. He was always good, kind and helpful. He wasnt trying to get into her panties like this ASS was. His character was more suited for the Flash. Cocky, wiseguy type flash. Not Steve TRevor.

Dont get me wrong I am glad he manned up! His little "damsel in distress" can wear you down. I am glad they made him more of a force to be reckoned with. However, in order to update him to present day and "man him up" he didnt need to be a PIG to be the man. You could still be a man, a gentleman without having to be an ASS. Give me a break.

4) Wonder WOman was so arrogant. YEs she was naive at first but never stupid. She was kind but never weak. She was compassionate but never a sap. She was forceful when needed to and commanding but never arrogant.

5) Etta Candy...she was always nice...and was never catty. They changed her character to a total bitch. Is that how people view men and woman nowadays? An Ass or a Bitch? common...so cynical.

It was so.... disappointing... like watching Batman Beyond or Superman with the same characters just different cartoon with different names. It's like they did a cut and paste.

6) Phillipus: General of the Amazon Guards & Queen Hippolyta's most trusted advisor & Chancellor of Themyscira.

It was thanks to General Phillipus guidance that Wonder WOman learned to CONTROL her strength, speed, power of flight, her wisdom and wits. Wonder Woman relied on her abilities too much and learned a painful lesson when Phillipus shot her with an arrow to teach WOnder Woman that too much faith in her powers could leave her vulnerable.

Euboea: Captain in the Amazon Guard.

Mnemosyne: A historian

Where do they get Artemis & ALexis from in the movie? That is so inaccurate. Didnt they take the time to research these details? Didnt they care enough to do it right?

7) Wonder Woman was getting her ass whooped! big time! Are you kidding me?! she had the same powers as Ares- WTH?!It should have been alot more closed fight than what it was. Granted she closed the deal in the end...still.

8) Her secret was known? That jackass, Steve, knew her secret? HER IDENTITY! And they were shacking up????? Where is the mystery? the suspense? I HATED IT!!!!!!!
What are they thinking? And she changed into her costume like Superman! Superman! Was anything not taken from another comic?

I was left DISAPPOINTED in the end. I liked that it had action and how Steve was more forceful. I loved Alfred Molina & the other voice overs but I feel as though they used this as a test run for the live movie and it was found wanting. And if they did use this as a test run they need to go back and tweak it... I feel as though they just threw some fighting, some little facts and Steve trying to be Rico Suave to pass as flirting & romance and said "there...that should be good enough for them". I feel very let down.

Agreed! They shouldn't have said "based on George Perez' version". That just got my hopes up. What they should have said was "an extra long Justice League Unlimited episode featuring WW's re-worked origin" . I HATE the fact that she does not fly. Then, they say NOTHING about the invisible jet, that apparently was seen by a ton of those flying monsters! It's really annoying that they felt they needed to put Etta Candy's name in here just for the sake of saying her name! The character called Etta Candy in this movie is 100 percent NOTHING like the comic!! Steve is a total PIG!! He even tells Hippolyta that her daughter has a nice rack?!! WTF?! There is NONE of Hippolyta's protectiveness portrayed in this film. When the winner is revealed to be Diana, she's like.."Okay, well, have fun!" Why did they change so many things? The Perez version could have been followed MUCH more closely, the movie would have been TONS better!! Seeing the Amazons cheer when they see Diana and Steve kiss is SICKENING! There were a couple things I DID like. The action was okay. I liked that she used her tiara several times. The best part of the movie is the ending where the little girl says "Look! It's Wonder Woman!" And we get to see the Cheetah. (Although I don't think Cheetah would rob a museum in the middle of the DAY!) All in all: try again WB!! WHY DOESN'T WARNER BROS EVER LISTEN TO THE FANS??????? THEY MAY AS WELL LET BEYONCE PLAY DIANA IN THE MOVIE!!!! J/K OF COURSE!!

Well, at least the action was OK... I hope the people who are making the real action film (sort of) read these opinions, and next time they make something closer to George Perez version. Of course, first they must choose an actress first, and they are taking so a long time... so I will help: with no profit motive in mind, I choose a list of actresses, then refine it:

Jenna Dewan, but she is doing the Magdalena, doesn't count
Alana de la Garza
Rhona Mitra
Anna Paquin
Gemma Arterton
Olga Kurylenko

If you now any other who may fit, please say it, perhaps if we propose good actresses, producers may choose one accidentaly :)

"accidently"...lol....

What do you think of these hopefuls?:

1) Lena Headey: 5'5, dark hair, blue eyes, Great actress (has range), fights, pretty and would be a very credible as Wonder Woman. She is the Queen from 300.

2) Emily Deschanel: 5'9, dark hair, blue eyes, good actress, fights, has the "look" of the original Wonder Woman if you see her in costume. With a good work out routine to get toned up like Jessica Biel in Blade III & she could do it. She was in GLory Road & Bones. Check out:
http://www.watt-up.com/j_gallery/Emily_Deschanel/slides/Emily_Deschanel%20(72).html

3)Jody Lynn O'keefe: 5'10, dark hair, blue eyes, good actress, does kickboxing, is pretty and she fights well. As Shaman says "she looks like she can kick ass at the drop of a dime".

What do you think? IMHO... I see them looking closer to the Wonder WOman I know and love..and would be credible playing the role.

George Perez? hmmm...

KeepItReal - 3/17/2009, 10:42 PM
Well Merinator, I got a chance to sit down & look at your hopefuls for the role of Wonder Woman and thought:

1) Jenna Dewan..is beautiful. She is half-Lebanese, so her coloring gives her a nice touch to the "Greek look". She is dark haired, sparkling eyes, but she is too short to be WOnder Woman. WW is 5'11- 6'0 tall. IMO she is beautiful but too petite.

2) Alana de la Garza.. also beautiful. She is 5'9 could work with that. But she has brown eyes as opposed to sparkling blue eyes. Of course they can use contacts but... too cheesy like Sue Storm in Fantastic 4.

3) Anna Paquin..very pretty but looks too young for the role of the mature Wonder Woman who looks to be 25-30 year old?. Also, she has brown eyes & is 5'5 & IMHO I cant see her in a commanding, decisive, strong role as Wonder Woman would have to be. She doesnt look Amazonish, a force to be reckoned with.I dont see her in that way.

4) Gemma Arterton... She doesnt look like Wonder Woman to me. Brown eyes, 5'7 & looks too young too.

5) Rhona Mitra... I think she has a strong, confident, no nonsense look that I believe Wonder should & needs to have. She seems like she could do the fighting scene some serious justice. While she is 5'7 & brown eyes I wouldnt turn her away (although I dont think IMHO she is very pretty...sorry =:(

6) Olga Kurylenko... She is beautiful, tall 5'10. Her looks seem very fragile like though, not like an Amazon if you know what I mean. & her eyes are dark green it seems, or haZel? She could be a possibility though I would have liked her best as maybe one of the Amazon sisters than the actual Diana.

I don't know who this individual is that wrote the above article, but he or she needs to check their facts. This film was good but a poor... extremely poor representation of WW. Here's why:

1st the woman is stronger than Hercules. That is her origin. Always has been. That puts her on the same playing field as Superman and Shazam (Capt. Marvel). Her creator included her muscle power and speed (swifter than Mercury) upon her creation. So why is it in the film Ares has these powers? He even states it!!!

2nd) She got beat down waaayyyyy too much. No way Ares should have gotten that many licks in. This clown who wrote the above article mentioning she only as strong as the other Amazons. Again check your facts, her origin clearly states her powers came from the greek gods. She was raised an amazon, but born by godly means. Next time do your research!

And this business with her using that silly plane. Huh, this is the 21st century people, she can fly! Get over it!!!!

I noticed she also had to be rescued by Steve in her film but Bats and Supes needed no help in theirs. Let's face it people, WW will never get the proper respect she's earned (outside her comic series). The world's greatest heroine would mean something you'd. think.

Well, there must be someone out there who looks like wonder woman. At least 1.80 meters tall, athletic with dark hair and blue eyes.

In my opinion, it does'nt matter if the chosen actress can't fight. Five months training while the set is constructed and the pre-production is done and one problem down.

But it is very very important that she can act. To me, at least, Wonder woman is not only a crime fighter, but also an ambassador and all this athena's wisdom stuff should be portayed anyhow.

the casting of Wonder Woman is so obvious, clearly its Angelina Jolie...who is unlikely to want to be in another "super hero" flick so the braver choice is also kinda obvious.....Rosario Dawson...

she has all the pysical attributes, fan boy favourite, strong, powerful...etc

the problem is the studio will want a young actress so they can bang out sequel after sequel if its a success...but the clue is in the title Wonder WOMAN...not wonder girl...
Merinator
Merinator - 3/18/2009, 9:03 AM
Angelina Jolie? Interesting, but I think she fits better as Hippolyte: she looks exactly that way in Oliver Stone's Alexander, although she should act according to the role.

Lynda Carter could be the oracle, what do you think?
KeepItReal
KeepItReal - 3/18/2009, 10:31 AM
I think its equally important to be able to fight as much as it is to able to act. You can have 5, 6, 7, 8 months of traing but if you suck you suck & since Wonder Woman is trained in all the Martial Arts she has to be credible, not 1/2 fast on the fighting level. It shows when you're inexperinced kicking front kicks & rounhouses etc... It has to be as real as possible.

I dont believe ROsario is a good choice for WOnder WOman. She is a fanboy favorite and so she is referred to for all the roles without impunity but not because she is the best choice. She runs the risk of being overexposed like Angelina Jolie.

She is pretty with out a doubt and is very talented, very good actress. However, she doesnt LOOK like Wonder WOman and if you pick someone who the fans cant relate to as Wonder WOman it doesnt matter how good Rosario is... the movie will flop. Rosario is 5'7 (1.70 meters), dark skinned (not that I mind =:) dark brown eyes. No one will relate to her as the WOnder Woman from their childhood, the comics, the tv series etc..etc..

Angelina Jolie? 5'8 (1.73 meters)... She is in everything...we need someone who is not so overexposed so that the real focus can be on Wonder WOman. IMHO.

What do you think about Eva Green or Tricia Helfer as Wonder Woman?

We also have Jessica Biel's option.
Merinator
Merinator - 3/18/2009, 1:21 PM
Ihave read that Megan Gale is 1.80 meters tall; I think the actress portraying wonder woman should be that size, in comics she always stood out.

If the people who runs the project behind the curtains finally decide to go ahead wit WW, they will also have one big problem: casting the amazons.

As I see it, the amazons are warriors, so the extras should have some fight knowledge; they are tall, or so were they portrayed in comics; all of them are beautiful.

To sum up, the problem is not only casting Wonder Woman, but also half the people. Perhaps a very huge casting could solve both problems at a time.

Some time ago, I read from Shaman and THEHAWK on this site a casting for the justice league and new gods of Apokolips. Maybe one of the females could fit Wonder Woman's boots:

Megan Gale for some reason or other seems to be the choice favorite. While she is beautiful with the sparkling blue eyes & raven hair and not to mention the proper height of 5'11 I am reluctant to become whole heartedly in to it because:

1) Can she act? Will she do Wonder Womans role justice? Wonder Woman is very complex and difficult character IMO and we want someone skilled enough to get that across to the audience. Does she have that ability, that range? I dont know of Megan Gale as an actress, I only heard of her as a model.

2) Can she fight? I know you don't feel that is such a big deal but IMO I do. It's like the role of Kato played by Bruce Lee. To do that movie today you need to have someone up to par to play Kato not just anyone will do. No one will ever take the place of the Dragon but they need to be able to at least keep up. Will you just go randomely pick an asian supermodel to play Kato & say: that will do, it's close enough. The fighting skills must not be sub-standard as well as the choreography of the fighting scenes. I hope they give this movie the same consideration and effort as they have given Wonder Womans counterparts Batman & Superman.

3) Can she speak with an American accent? I dont want Wonder WOman sounding as though she is from Down Under. This is trivial, I know. With proper speech lessons she can fix her accent, hopefully.

As for the Amazon warriors I totally agree. Perhaps the hopefuls that were presented for the role of Wonder Woman but didnt get it could do as the other Amazon Warriors. Rhona Mitra could be like Captain of the Royal Guards.

This would be my wishlist for the movie:

Lynda Carter: Queen Hippolyta. It's only fitting and right she be given that honor.

Wonder Woman: Jody Lynn O'keefe

Wonder Girl: Jenna Dewan

General Phillipus: Aisha Tyler...she is 6'0

Captain of Royal Guards: Rhona Mitra

Steve Trevor: Hugh Jackman

Etta Candy: Ginnifer Goodwin.. from Big Love & He's Not That Into You.

General Phil Blackenship: John Mahoney from Frazier, Dan in Real Life.

I have one new option: Ivana Milicevic, 5' 8"

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0587431/

I have seen this picture of her with dark hair:

http://www.imdb.com/media/rm3473053696/nm0587431

There is the problem of acting, voice and fighting, but nobody is perfect...
KeepItReal
KeepItReal - 3/18/2009, 10:33 PM
Ivana Milicevic I think is actually taller at 5'10.5".. She looked good kinda like Jody Lynn O'Keefe with the dark hair.

True, no one is perfect. But it's no reason to complicate things.

Why teach someone to fight for 5 or 6 months when you already have someone who can fight? Time could be better spent preparing for something else.

Why get someone who is 5'5 when you already have some who are 5'10. 5'11? & coincidently also fights? You are already 1/2 way there.

Acting is very important and the Wonder Woman project is proving to be a challenge & is too important to be given to just anyone especially for someone with no background to speak of. Go with who you know but is not too big an actress that it will take away focus from Wonder Woman.

All you have left is the voice. As I stated earlier it is trivial & whomever can be coached. If you have 2 or 3 out of the 4 take it & run! KISS it- Keep It Simple Sailor.

There is something I just thought about: what kind of fighters were ancient greeks? I mean, the amazons are greek based warriors like spartans. To my eye, for example, is quite the same judo and aikido but I know for sure that they are completely different both in style and philosophy. This could be a small problem, but perhaps is convenient to do some background investigation about ancient greek fighting. Wonder Woman is very skilled in every fighting art she was taught, but if the amazons have been isolated 3000 years, is almost sure they haven't learned neither kick-boxing, judo, ninjitsu etc.

I also found this, while surfing instead of studying:

LOL! Julia...wouldnt she be later on down the road as the story continues to evolve? I think it would be alot if she were in the beginning. If there would be a sequel then I would choose....someone like Rosemary Harris or Maggie Smith only taller like 5'9. Who do you think?
Merinator
Merinator - 3/20/2009, 3:31 AM
I think Judy Dench: she is very good indeed, usually does seriouos acting but also seriouos roles and she should portray two specific subroles: adoptive mother/guardian and investigator.

Thankfully, we don't have to worry about height this time: she is only amazon-adopted and she can be as tall as she wants.

I believe I would put her in he first film, it would give more dignity, seriousness and quality
KeepItReal
KeepItReal - 3/20/2009, 2:36 PM
Yeah...Judy Dench. I thought of her & I love her to pieces but the comics say that Julia is 5'9 and Judy is only 5'1. But since she wouldnt be the main character maybe the audience would forgive this little thing.

I think for the first movie it would be like a information overload. There is alot to cover story wise about WOnder Woman alone not to mention those who are around her. But hey, since we are having fun with this why not?

Ares? hmmmm... Jeffrey Donovan? not menancing enough. Looks too prim and proper, too preppy IMO.. as far as the amorality goes... I dk...I havent really seen any of his movies.

Maybe someone more like... Randy Couture 6'1"...from Scorpion King 2: Rise of the Warrior... & Cradle 2 the Grave with Jet LI...IMO... First fighter to hold championship titles in two different weight divisions in the UFC.

MMA record is 16-8-0 as of UFC 74.

Okay well, first things first: LYNDA MUST PLAY THE QUEEN!! No-brainer WB!! The fact that they asked her to play Hera in this animated feature is insulting! Angelina Jolie would be a good Barbara Minerva or Circe, but not Diana. She has a dark quality to her that would be great. Megan Gale has peaked my interest. Out of anybody the media mentions, I wouldn't mind giving her a chance, or whatever happened to Jordan Bayne? Other than that, get an unknown. Any famous actress will only distract from the character. WW must be able to fly and have super strength and speed. There should be some body builder size Amazons mixed in with maybe Angela Basset playing Phillipus? Doubt she would take the role..haha..anyway that's what i think..

NIICE pick for Angelina as Circe!!! TOTALLY agree with that.... good eye!

Angela Basset... not bad... interesting! Maybe a bit older but that could work since she is "immortal" & about 2000 years older than Wonder Woman, her mentor.

Wonder Woman as a body builder? Like Chyna? No, that would be wrong. Wonder Woman has strength, is strong as Hercules without sacrificing her femininity. She didnt look butch in her appearance. If you say something more along the lines of more athletic, toned say like Jessica Biel in Blade III I would agree.
