Well....let's see.

Although i too want an R rated Akira wouldn't you all agree at this point if it was rerated today it would probably only get a PG-13. Maybe the nipslip of Tetsuo's raped girlfriend puts it over the edge but not by much.

This will not happened anytime soon dont Americanized it. Keep it to its true form. Akira is great dont ruin it like bay did with transformers.

I would make into a trilogy having the first movie be book volume 1 & 2, the second movie volume 3 & 4 & the third be book volume 5 & 6. This would allow the budget be a bit smaller for the first flick (70-80 million maybe?). Have the first movie make an awesome impact & get enough to support & $ from the first so that the other two can be made at 90-100+ million each. With that said if they truly intend to make this into a live action movie I don't feel this director is the right choice. Aside from that first thing on my to do list (if I was the director) is have Katsuhiro Otomo on board & be involved in some major capacity. If you are going to do it, do it right & remain close to the source material as much as possible.

That sounds good if they want to go off the manga rather than the animated film. I still have yet to read the manga because I'm scared it's better than the movie. But from what you listed it would be a good idea for a 3 part film series.

I hate everything he said except for the trilogy comment. He sounds like he doesn't get it at all. Using the differences in the anime as an excuse to just do something entirely different and call it Akira is pitiful.
They should do a trilogy, though. The first film should be the first two books witha bit of the anime worked in. and then the next two should adapt the subsequent 4 books. It's not exactly rocket science.
And the anime was done by Katsuhiro himself. It counts as a rewrite, in some senses. It makes a lot of the first book more cinematic, so those would be the versions that should be used in a live action adaptation. But then, the rest of the anime should be discounted, as it was a reworking of the rest of the entire epic. Some of the latter half of the anime could be worked into a trilogy, but if they are going to do a trilogy, then they should really go back to the manga.
In an ideal world, it would be set in Neo Tokyo and have a mostly Japanese cast and be shot as a hugely epic LOTR-esque trilogy, back-to-back with a big-assed budget.
Risky? Sure. Like LOTR wasn't. If you build it, they will come. Notice how the two top grossing movies of all time were advertised as being the biggest and most expensive productions? If the Headline is big enough, it makes the news big enough

This is a timeless classic that, if anything, is defined by the unbelievable visuals that were done by entirely hand drawn animation.

Give this one a 3-D IMAX remastered run and introduce it to a whole new set of fans

i think this is one of those rare films that actually needs over-the-top CGI effects.

But if they handled it similarly to the way Rurouni Kenshin was done, it would be frrrrigging mind blowing...

but as many have already stated...they'll Americanize it...Keneda becomes Kenneth (played by Sharkboy aka Jacob), Tetsuo becomes Tommy (played by Percy Jackson) and "Akira" becomes DragonBall Evo-garbage...
