During the podcast interview, Hughes(one half of the directing duo, The Hughes Bros) confirmed that he and his bro will indeed be bringing the hugely popular manga adap to the big screen. They had been mentioned in connection with it(something I totally forgot to cover in my last article, apologies!)but it now seems that the duo behind From Hell and The Book Of Eli will be the men for the unenviable job.
During the podcast, Hughes revealed the following. Its most likely that we will be getting a PG13
Akira. When asked about it being an R, he at first said
”You would think,”,
But then revealed that WB want them to bring it in at a much safer(and more financially beneficial)PG13.
“The first thing they said to me was it had to be PG-13,”
Great. But it gets even worse. Hughes said of the highly complex plot.
“I want to simplify everything for the audience.”.
And get this, Hughes says that contrary to what we have heard, the films will not be shot back to back and the dude isn't even sure he will stick around for the second movie!
“I’m not into sequels, I don’t even know if I wanna be around for the sequel. I’m just focusing on the first movie.”.
Well, thats passion and dedication for ya. It seems as if he doesn't even grasp that a second film wouldn't be a sequel, but a continuation of the story thats already laid out in literal black and white!
I was maintaining my optimism for this live action version of by far my favorite Anime(and manga) ever. I could accept the changes we had heard about the switch from Neo Tokyo to New Manhattan, an all American cast etc. And I'm not even that down on The Hughes bros, I think they have talent.
From Hell and
Book Of Eli had their problems, but they also had their moments. But this is just ridiculous. Until I see something to change my mind, Mr Hughes can shove his PG13, dumbed down half a story up his ass, and WB can follow it.
Too harsh?:)
Oh be sure to listen to the full podcast to hear one of the most cringe-worthy, excruciating examples of ass suckage you will ever experience from the two guys interviewing him. Maybe American
Akira won't be so diferent to this after all..
