Rupert Sanders' live-action take on Ghost In The Shell has cast its male lead. According to Variety, up-and-coming Danish actor Pilou Asbaek will play Section 9 second in command and all-round tough SOB, Batou. He'll rejoin his Lucy co-star Scarlett Johansson, who is set to star as the "augmented-cybernetic human" leader of the covert team, Major Motoko Kusanagi.

The story "follows a female special ops cyborg who leads an elite task force called Section 9 for Hanka Robotics. Section 9 is devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists, led by The Laughing Man whose singular goal is to wipe out Hanka’s advancements in cyber technology."

Avi Arad and Steven Paul are producing this big screen adaptation of Ghost in Shell from a script by Bill Wheeler. The movie is scheduled for release on March 31, 2017.

I have to say it again.

Just because it is an anime, does not mean that it has to be a Japanese cast. The thing you should look at is environment, time period and so forth.

With that logic i guess Superman should have been latinoamerican, even though he is drawn as a american if it the creators was from Spain or mexico??

It's too bad that the studios can't cast an unknown as the lead. I'm getting tired of Johansson.

I'm assuming at least some of you have watched GitS. Most of Section 9 was not Asian. All round eye.
Still. The casting has not been that great.

It's not even the race of the cast that bothers me.

Anime live-action films are shit, the best you hope for is they have decent action (Rurouni Kenshin) but the rest, made by Americans or the Japanese, is pure garbage.

Okay not sure if any of you are familiar with GITS but the Japan is a HUGE HUGE HUUUUUUGE factor into the story! I'm not worried about casting for Batou's race, but this choice just sucks. Ron Perlman would've been perfect too. However, Scarlett Johanson is so damn bland I hope this fails

@AsapJoker - In what world was there ever a Japanese film called 'Internal Affairs'? I think you got a little mixed up there and actually referring to the Hong Kong based movie - 'Infernal Affairs' (2002). Though, there was a Hollywood movie called 'Internal Affairs', which came out in 1990, but shares no relation to this.
