The official plot synopsis for Spike Lee's upcoming remake of the 2003 Korean film Oldboy has hit the web. Sounding a lot like the original film (as expected), check it out after the jump!

Collider has received some plot details for various Lionsgate films that will be out in the future, and one of those films was for Spike Lee's upcoming remake of Oldboy, starring Josh Brolin and set to begin production sometime next Spring (Collider says that the film will be released sometime next year). The below synopsis sounds very similar to the plot for the original film (as expected, of course), so while not very revealing, it's certainly worth a look...

Synopsis:
A man kidnapped and imprisoned on his daughter’s birthday is held captive for fifteen years. Upon his release he embarks on an obsessive mission to find the reason for his imprisonment and soon finds out that his kidnapper has plans for him more tortuous than solitary confinement.

Starring Josh Brolin, Spike Lee's Oldboy begins production early next year, possibly for a 2012/2013 release.

Why the need of remaking an already very good film?
I liked the original, the ending was so f&$#ed up, much better than the manga, imo.

I hope Lee base his movie on the manga and not on the corean version - and make a fantastic one!

Haven't seen the original, but heard a lot of praise about it, so might have to check it out, but with that in mind Spike Lee + Josh Brolin sounds like an interesting team up, hopefully if the rumours of Chris Bale being the villain r true, regardless of being a remake or what this should b an interesting film

Say what you will about Fight Club and the Sixth Sense, Oldboy is by far the biggest Mind F*ck movie EVER MADE.

@ncreb agreed. But i'm sure there are plenty of people out there who don't have the time (or an open mind for foreign film) to watch a Korean thriller. To bad really, I don't know how its gonna top the original.

I had the original Oldboy in my Netflix instant queue for a while, but they removed it from streaming before I had a chance to watch it :{

The original was mental but no way will the American version give the same twist ending as that but still i wont mind seeing how this turns out

The original was part of a trilogy of films about revenge. If Hollywood is not gonna do a trilogy, why bother. This feel like Departed all over again. Good cast, same execution as the original. Redundant. But Spike might win an oscar for this retread.
