UPDATE: Production For Spike Lee's OLDBOY Delayed

Originally slated to begin production this Spring, it's been revealed that Spike Lee's upcoming remake of the South Korean film Oldboy will instead begin filming later this year, due to actor Josh Brolin's press commitments to Men In Black 3.

Hot off the heels of Warner Bros. announcing that production on their Akira project was shut down indefinitely, another manga adaptation, Oldboy, is also being delayed. Spike Lee's upcoming adaptation (which is also an American remake of the 2003 South Korean film of the same name) was originally slated to begin production this Spring, with actor Josh Brolin in the lead role. However, due to Brolin's press commitments to the third Men In Black film, Oldboy will instead begin production in the late summer or early fall, after press on MIB3 is finished. Variety's Jeff Sneider broke the story below:

Brolin is the only confirmed cast member right now. Mia Wasikowska and Clive Owen were both offered roles in the film, but it's currently unknown if they had accepted or turned down the offers.

What are your thoughts on the production delay for Spike Lee's Oldboy? Share them below in your usual place.

UPDATE: Jeff Sneider just tweeted more bad news concerning the project. Apparently Clive Owen has also turned down the role of the villain, after Colin Firth and Christian Bale turned it down.

I'm not sold as Spike Lee as director. I have always felt his movies were lacking. Miracle at St.Anna is probably his only saving grace, besides that most of his movies just served as a medium to get his political views across.

I'm wondering if everyone is passing on the project because of a crappy script. Brolin tends to star in mediocre films despite giving a good performance (Jonah Hex, W., etc), and perhaps it's the same case here. Other people offered roles were Rooney Mara, Clive Owen, Christian Bale, Mia Wasikowska and Colin Firth (all except Wasikowska have turned down their offers, and we don't even know if she's gonna be in the film), all of which are quality actors who tend to be in more good films than bad. But you never know.

This might have potential, despite all the negativity and delays. The original, a favorite of mine, is a whole lot different from the manga on which is was adapted. Lots to adapt and change just like the Korean film did.

While my opinion really means nothing here, I thought Inside Man was Lee's best film since Malcolm X....
