ROBOTECH Finds Its Director In IT Helmer Andy Muschietti - What's That Mean For JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK?

It's being reported that Sony Pictures has found a director for their adaptation of the classic anime Robotech in IT helmer Andy Muschietti, who was previously being courted for Justice League Dark.

The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Sony Pictures has tapped Andy Muschietti to helm their upcoming film adaptation of the '80s anime Robotech.

The story takes place in a time when Earth has developed giant robots from technology collected of an alien spaceship that crashed on a South Pacific island. These robots are then used to defend mankind when the planet is threatened by an alien invasion.

Last we heard, James Wan had signed on to helm the long-gestating project, but according to this report, he chose to drop out due to his commitments on Warner Bros.' next DC solo feature Aquaman, which is currently filming in Australia with stars Jason Momoa & Amber Heard in the lead roles.

Muschietti, whose past credits include Mama & It, was previously rumored to be the frontrunner to land the Justice League Dark directing gig, but it's now uncertain whether those talks are still ongoing or whether WB has decided to go in a different direction. With San Diego Comic-Con just around the corner, let's hope we get an update one way or another by the end of this weekend.

What that means for JL dark? Who cares, it's freakin' Robotech.
I know it's Sony, which means a high probability of a f*ck up, but I want them to succed with this one.
Ps: Macross' still better thou.

@Spidey91 - If done right, Robotech really could be the next Star Wars. Pilots in transformable Mech/fighter jets taking on giant alien soldiers looking to get their power source back (Protoculture) with some romance thrown in for good measure. The trilogy story is pretty much already there. But yes, Sony WILL screw this up.

@Buckster10 - Gundam could be the next Star Wars in my opinion. I would also like to see Broken Blade in live action.

@Buckster10 - you possibly could be right but I don't think they're going to throw enough money into the budget. Either way I'm still excited for it.

@WruceBayne - I just hope they're faithful to the look of the pilots and Veritechs and cast real actors not Twilight looking kids.

This is going to be a tough/weird adaptation to get right. I'm a HUGE Macross fan, but I'm on "humbug" status until/unless Sony shows me something worth getting my hopes up over.

Oh I'm stoked for this. Robotech was my gateway into anime and my parents are to thank for that. Is Decaprio still attached to this? I remember hearing he had the rights to the movie at one point or at least was very attached to it

Leave Justice League Dark in the dark. It was a terrible comic and a poor use of characters who deserve better. There are much better mystical team ups. Trenchcoat Brigade. Books of Magic. Shadowpact. Children's Crusade.

@rabid - "Trenchcoat Brigade. Books of Magic. Shadowpact. Children's Crusade."

So, Books of Magic, Books of Magic, Shadowpact and Books of Magic. JLD was absolutely not a terrible comic (it was actually often better than JLA), even if I'd agree that Demon Knights was far superior and would make for a more interesting movie.

@Asturgis - JLD had really amazing art but the story was weaksauce. And I'm a huge Milligan fan. Once Lemke took over it was the most amateurish book in the New52. The animated series handled the story much better, but even that wouldn't fly for a movie script. House of Mystery should see the big screen, but they need to dump half that team roster to make it work, or else it will be another Suicide Squad.

@Asturgis - Lemire, not Lemke. This website is so buggy, my keyboard just throws random words.

@rabid - Yeah, I've been talking about that in the latest Arrow thread, as far as his Marvel or DC works are concerned, Lemire is completely inconstant. Only things he's always great at is his own personal "indie" stuff, which is kinda logical in a way. I feel you and I absolutely don't disagree, but I really enjoyed JLD. Then again, being a Zatanna zealot, I can't be objective. To each his own :)

You seem to love magical stories, have you read Black Magick by Greg Rucka (Lazarus) and Nicola Scott (Wonder Woman)? That is FLAWLESS work. Her art is the best (her work on Wonder Woman is impressive, she can make Diana have 50 different faces and expressions) and Rucka is, well, Rucka. To me one of the best around. I highly recommend it. It's from Image.

@Asturgis - I will definitely check that out. I love magic stories, but a lot of writers aren't skilled at it, so they just write it like a vague superpower.
