GHOST IN THE SHELL Anime Director Opens Up About Scarlett Johansson's Controversial Casting In The Film

Recently, Kodansha Comics did a roundtable interview with some of Ghost in the Shell’s most famous creators. Mamoru Oshii, who directed its 1995 anime feature, met up with Kenji Kamiyama and Kazuchika Kise to talk about the franchise’s legacy. When Ghost in the Shell’s live-action movie was brought up, Oshii said he thought Scarlett Johansson was the right choice to play Motoko.

“Yes,” Oshii answered when asked if he agreed with the casting. “I first heard about doing a live-action version almost ten years ago. It’s been a long road since then, but to be honest, it seemed like someone would do it eventually, and I admit I was concerned about who would play Motoko.”

“I think Scarlett Johansson is about the best person they could have cast for the part, and I’m happy to be able to say that I have no objection to that choice,” the director added.

Two of the directors were also asked about the time they spent on the film’s set. Kamiyama said he was impressed by the scale of the project, but Oshii admits he was a bit puzzled over why Hollywood does so many takes.

“I was a little surprised, too, by the way Hollywood does filming — how they’ll do the same scene take after take," he said. "They were doing a shot of someone walking into a store, and I thought they were going to be at it all night. I have no idea what was wrong that they wanted to repeat it so many times.”

Hollywood’s style differs from the Japanese film industry, but it seems the U.S. wants to tap into the latter’s pool of stories. There are more than half a dozen live-action anime projects in development within Hollywood, so it is just a matter of time until one of them finds the perfect formula. Ghost in the Shell is a stepping stone to that undiscovered territory, and it doesn’t look like Oshii is totally mad about what the film mapped out.

Here is the official trailer of Ghost In The Shell for those who have not seen the film or want to watch the trailer once again!

Based on the internationally-acclaimed Japanese Anime property, Ghost In The Shell follows Major, a special ops, one-of-a-kind human-cyborg hybrid, who leads the elite task force Section 9 devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists. Directed by Rupert Sanders. The film stars Scarlett Johansson, “Beat” Takeshi Kitano, Juliette Binoche, Michael Pitt, Pilou Asbæk, and Kaori Momoi.

I don't really have a problem with her being white, but if I were the director I would've just cast a Japanese actress. The setting is Japan, you have an Asian lead, and there's no unnecessary controversy. Plus they could've made a statement about representation in Hollywood, whatever.

@ScarletWarlock - Like, honestly, how many Asian women lead a blockbuster, like ever? Missed opportunity.

@ScarletWarlock - Exactly how I feel about this whole thing. It's all about providing opportunities, and less about 'accuracy' in this case

@BlindWedjat - Yeah, I mean, apparently the creators had no issue with her being white, so I think people went a little overboard with the white washing thing, but it's also not like the outrage is unfounded, it was 100% a missed opportunity to go out of their comfort zone and possibly make the minority as a main hero thing a little more popular for other studios.

I loved this movie and the homage they paid to the original anime.

Lol. Why does Hollywood do so many takes. Lol. Well you look at asian cinema and you can see why many of their films...luve action are horrible if not laugh out loud.

@blitzkreg - Seriously people can shit to Hollywood adaptations all they want , but the anime live action they do in Japan are cringy asf too.

OUTRAGE!

(Actually... no outrage at all. Though, I can only imagine the awkwardness if he'd said something like the Full Metal Alchemist guy... Just ick...)

Honestly... even given leeway for translation hiccups, this is problematic stuff:

“The heart part of the original manga is perfectly Japanese, and the brother relationship between Ed and Al is also unique to Japanese. It may be possible to recreate the manga characters' visuals in a Hollywood's big-budget film, but the heart part must be shifted.”

Apparently there is a controversy about it in western journalism at least. It's nice to see that they aren't getting otaku immunity for this.

Love this movie! The soundtrack was great too, I hope we get a sequel.

I saw this in theaters and don't remember any of it, I think I fell asleep. Even though I'm not the biggest Scarlett Johansson fan this adaptation was a misfire regardless.

Call me crazy.. but when I watch anime cartoons, I don't picture the characters as being Japanese looking aesthetically, they're simply people, so this outrage always perplexed me.. casting a known celebrity will insure that people that would not otherwise go see these types of movies might be inclined to, and with budgets over 100 million you bet your ass the studios are looking for bankable celebrities

If they ever take another crack at it, I'd give either of these two a call to helm it.

Personally, I think the anime is enough though.

Well of course they dont care about the casting. They care about getting the brand out there to as many people as possible. They actually appreciate directors who try something new rather than copy their films frame by frame.

But the movie sucked:horrible acting, boring plot, and stupid twist

*spoiler*
Major was actually asian in the film and got white washed to look like scarlett johansson. Talk about not trying to whitewash an asian property, when they literally did it in the film.
Ace006
Ace006 - 11/8/2017, 5:55 PM
@mastakilla39 - it felt more like they did that to try and alleviate the controversy more but it sucked and kinda backfired on them and honestly i thought the controversy was stupid she's a robot
DoktorMaDD
DoktorMaDD - 11/8/2017, 9:17 PM
@Ace006 - Yeah, it definitely backfired. And I understand the controversy, given how few Asian women are given the opportunity to have a lead role in a Hollywood franchise and that this situation was the perfect opportunity to cast as such.
Ace006
Ace006 - 11/8/2017, 10:03 PM
@DoktorMaDD - yea i understand that too i think stupid was the wrong word maybe over the top or something i know the movie wasn't good but it wasn't as bad as people say and i think a lot of that has to do with the whitewashing thing
DoktorMaDD
DoktorMaDD - 11/8/2017, 10:12 PM
@Ace006 - Yeah, not to sound condescending, but people should really think before ascribing words like "stupid" or "dumb" to the reasonable reactions of thousands, if not millions of people. It makes you seem like an ignorant asshole, which I don't believe you are.

And yeah, a lot of the hate the movie got was because of the whitewashing. That's to be expected. Its like Alex Proyas getting all huffy because nobody wanted to see a whitewashed CGI fest (Gods of Egypt)--it also didn't help that the movie sucked. Ghost in the Shell suffered from whitewashing controversy, but it didn't help that the movie was heavy-handed, poorly written, and bland as hell.
Ace006
Ace006 - 11/8/2017, 10:52 PM
@DoktorMaDD - thing is about ghost in the shell her shell is supposed to look white at least in a few versions but i get that it was a wasted opportunity to cast an unknown asian actress we do need more

like i said before i don't think this movie was bad it was alright was it disappointing sure but you can see that the filmmakers did try to do it justice unlike other anime/manga adaptions 'cough' death note 'cough'
DoktorMaDD
DoktorMaDD - 11/9/2017, 1:08 PM
@Ace006 - Yeah, I have to agree with you on that one, man.

"There are more than half a dozen live-action anime projects in development within Hollywood"

been saying for years that live action anime is the next CBM
Spock0Clock
Spock0Clock - 11/8/2017, 12:26 PM
@ODanil - Yep. Once Hollywood is able to swallow their own vomit at the sight/sound of it, anime/manga will be the next gold rush. But there's going to need to be some Western filmmaker/producer who understands it and is able to translate it into a mainstream American vocabulary.
Spock0Clock
Spock0Clock - 11/8/2017, 12:34 PM
...On the other hand, each and every anime franchise is going to be a nightmare of whitewashing controversies until Hollywood finds some way to navigate it.

There is a middleground between "Asian-Originated media must be led by Asian-American actors" and "Localization means White People". But we're not at that synthesis yet. And as toxic as comicbook fans have a reputation for being, they aren't anything compared to anime/manga fans.

I mean, just suggesting that you like watching the dubbed version of someone's favorite show instead of the subbed is sometimes enough to create conflict and disdain.
Ace006
Ace006 - 11/8/2017, 5:58 PM
@Spock0Clock - i always laughed at the dub vs sub debate it's so stupid i get why people watch both cause i know i do
BlackIceJoe
BlackIceJoe - 11/8/2017, 12:24 PM
The thing that I find funny about this whole thing is the people in charge brought in Scarlett, because they thought she'd be the draw for the movie, but instead was the reason few people watched the film.

It would have been a lot better to have gone with an Asian actress and rolled the dice going with someone lesser known, than going with someone that as soon as they are casted whitewashing controversies start.

I really liked the movie, they did a great job with the visuals. The casting was good as well. Its sad that people didnt give it a chance but then again their minds are already made up even without watching it.

I have to admit the movie was actually good...but truly truly..the casting was awful. I would have enjoyed it much more even if the entire thing was in Japanese or whatever and had subtitles. No offence against SJ but she was very wrong for this role.
