Kevin Feige Explains Why ANT-MAN Is In 'Good Shape' with Director Peyton Reed

Revealing that Peyton Reed was in contention with James Gunn to helm Guardians of the Galaxy, producer Kevin Feige explains why the Yes Man director is perfect for Ant-Man, and more. Check it out

"Number one – thank you for asking the question in that way, which is doing what we’re doing which is thinking about the movie and the end result of the movie," said Kevin Feige when IGN asked the Marvel Studios producer about
the drama surrounding Ant-Man, its former director Edgar Wright and his replacement. "Peyton [Reed] is someone that I’ve been a fan of for a long time. People may not remember, though probably your readers remember, that he was attached to Fantastic Four more than 10 years ago. We spent a lot of time together…  and I got along with Peyton very, very well and he had awesome ideas and an awesome vision for the movie, and for various reasons he ended up leaving that movie..." The Marvel Studios president continued, "
He’s come in to meet on a lot of our movies over the years, in particular Guardians of the Galaxy. He had a lot of awesome things to say on Guardians. But James [Gunn] had a slightly more solid take that was of interest to us. But Peyton was always on our lists, and so when this happened and Edgar [Wright] said ‘Not for me’ we met with a handful of people, but Peyton was always one that I thought would be great."

"It was not a slam-dunk that he would just step into it and do it," added Kevin Feige. "He wanted to be sure that he was wasn’t just inheriting something or following someone else’s lead. Or wasn’t inheriting something that the evil studio had watered down to be something bad. I kept saying, ‘You can either read what’s online, or come in and talk to us and look at all this stuff.’ He looked at everything, he talked with us, and he said ‘Number one, I agree with the direction you’re going in. And number two, I can add to it.’ And he has – the movie is in as good a shape as it’s ever been right now. It’s still very much in the spirit of what Edgar’s original pitch was and the entire template of the movie is what Edgar set out and originally came and pitched us maybe eight years ago now. But it's on its way to being the absolute best version of what that movie could have been. Peyton is really, really wonderful, and will be proving that soon enough. As I said to the Comic-Con audience a few years ago, ‘You might not have heard of Joe and Antony Russo, [who directed this year's Captain America: The Winter Soldierbut you’re going to be big fans of them soon.’ And I’d say the same thing about Peyton Reed now." What do you think?

Armed with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, con-man Scott Lang must embrace his inner-hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym, protect the secret behind his spectacular Ant-Man suit from a new generation of towering threats. Against seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Pym and Lang must plan and pull off a heist that will save the world.
Directed by Peyton Reed, Ant-Man stars Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas, Corey Stoll, Evangeline Lilly, David Dastmalchian, Michael Pena, and Patrick Wilson, and is set for release on July 17, 2015.

@Omega

I hope they knock it out of the park. For me I was very skeptical and was gonna see a test screening (if there was one) but since I lost my priviledges of seeing rough cuts of films, I'm gonna have to wait until next year with everybody which sucks:/

I love it, Feige basically shat on Wright. I'm ridiculously happy that Wright is no longer attached. [frick]er dlayed, and delayed, and delayed, and couldn't meet deadlines. GTFO and go direct another mirror-image brit-com.

That was fun. In all honesty, I couldn't care less about Ant-Man. The only thing that drew any interest from me was the casting of Michael Douglas, and the casting of Evangeline Lily's 'assets'. It's still the only things keeping me interested.

Hopefully it's good.

Slightly more optimistic now after hearing him address the speculation and his confidence in Peyton Reed.

I didn't hear a single F*cking reason that Kevin Feige said towards Reed being a good choice other than he'll be their bitch and that they're copying most of what Edgar laid out.

Plus "You might not have heard of [Captain America: The Winter Soldier directors] Joe and Antony Russo, but you’re going to be big fans of them soon.’ And I’d say the same thing about Peyton Reed now."
^ The difference there is that The Russo Brothers weren't known for directing shit movies. These comments do nothing to show why Edgar wouldn't have done a great job.

I'm really hoping this movie is awesome, I'm still not 100% on board with it yet but hearing Kevin Feige talk about it more is giving me some more confidence.

It's a shame what happened with Edgar Wright, but all I can do now is hope for the best.

lol The man has good speaking game! I'd see this either way. Kind of bummed Wright was removed from the picture, but still excited about it none the less..

*reads what feige has to say....

The guy hasn't directed a movie since 2008. I doubt thats just cause he doesn't want too. Even Yes Man was not very good, so until i see the movie consider me not excited for this. Not even trailers can get me pumped cause thor 2 and iron man 3 still hurt.

@Charlie

I'm crying too man. Wright had 8 years, and it wasn't 8 years in some self-contained bubble, it was 8 years worth of "here's what we're doing, adapt or get the [frick] out" and still he couldn't manage it, despite being given time to churn out a few of his own films in the meantime. Marvel was more than fair.

If he was "always on the list" why was he the last resort after like 2-3 other directors dropped out of the project? lol Either way I'm just glad they found someone interested in the film, lord knows they needed it.

Wright did not say "this is not for me"

You brought in low level hack- writers to revamp his script for the upteenth time then you, his supposed ally and friend over at Marvel, threw him under the bus.

@MercwithMouth- Except you seem to be ignoring the fact that Marvel gave Wright permission to go make Scott Pilgrim and The World's End. Besides, I'm pretty sure whatever Wright was doing was superior to whatever the Yes Man is cooking up.
