New ANT-MAN Screenplay Said To Be "More American"; Will 'The Falcon' Cameo?

We have more details here on the changes Marvel made to Edgar Wright's screenplay which led to his departure, while director Peyton Reed and the cast all weigh in on this new version. It turns out that Wright wrote an after-credits scene for Avengers: Age of Ultron too...

We've heard a lot about why Edgar Wright decided not to direct Ant-Man,  but the latest issue of Empire Magazine sheds some more light on why he decided to part ways with Marvel Studios. For example, they point out that Wright's version of the script would have seen Scott Lang take on the villainous "Nano Warrior", but the basic premise - Lang being guided by Hank Pym in a mentor like role - was still there. There have also been reports that Wright's script didn't take place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but that apparently wasn't the case as as it featured appearances from established cameos and he had even written an after-credits scene for Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Some of the changes made along the way included Nano Warrior being renamed Yellowjacket, a car chase being scrapped, and a number of characters being cut (some of which we heard about during pre-production).  However, it was definitely Dave Callaham (The Expendables) and Eric Pearson's (Agent Carter) changes which led to Wright's departure as we've heard a number of times already.

"Was it a strange situation? Absolutely," says new Ant-Man director Peyton Reed. "One of my concerns upfront was, 'Someone else has developed this movie for a really long time. Can I come in and make it my own?' And that has absolutely been the case. For one thing Marvel have let me explore the dark side of Hank Pym, this tortured, guilt-ridden guy. I love that this is a mentor/pupil story, but with a [frick]ed up pupil and a really [frick]ed up mentor." Reed even reveals that he spoke to Wright via email after accepting the job, so it definitely sounds like there's no bad blood between the two filmmakers. "We both acknowledged the general werdness of the situation. It's all very odd, but it's been really nice to communiate with him."

It's star Evangeline Lilly (who describes Hope Van Dyne as "kind of a bitch...a very had woman on a journey towards becoming a decent person") who reveals perhaps the most interesting details about the changes made to the screenplay by Paul Rudd and Adam McKay though. "I met with Paul in a little restaurant in New York City, and he talked me through how the movie was changing. I think the most defining difference between the two scripts was that Edgar's didn't take itself as seriously. It was fun and silly and brilliant irreverent - a romp from beginning to end, in classic English fashion. Whereas where we've gotten to is so much more American. There's tons of levity, but just as much emotion." Whether that's a good or bad thing remains to be seen!

Finally, the magazine mentions that Anthony Mackie's Falcon might make an appearance alongside other Avengers, to which Reed would only say: "That's classified information. That's buried. It's possible." What do you guys think about these latest Ant-Man details? See new images HERE.

@Amazing512- Except British comedies are funnier than American comedies today. And I say this as an American.

I used to be excited for Ant-Man. Now I'm approaching the film with caution.

Sounds like Cap and the avengers are recruiting. Maybe they know of the impending registration; there's been rumblings of it and they're recruiting as many heroes they know of. sounds like they're really making the avengers larger, a real unit. This could scare the world govts...so many powered individuals being together.

I told yall last year that whatever reason Marvel let Edgar wright go was probably because they didn't like the way the script was coming along

Besides from having some of the most unique action in any CBM ever, there's so much banality in character and story... From what I've seen. Can't help but feel the direction they're taking these characters is faulty.

It still worries me that the director of 'Yes man' said he made a script written by Edgar Wright "funnier".

MCU is becoming larger and larger and way more cohesive. I love it. More and more like a comic book. All the heroes together.

That said, still very interested and excited to see how it all turns out. A very nice bridge between huge movies like Civil War and Age Of Ultron.

I have high hopes for this movie, hopefully I won't be dissapointed. I hope that Falcon does make an appearance and if he does, I think he will be the one to recruit Ant-Man for Civil War.

@Amazing512- Well, I know Wright is capable of not infusing all his films with British humor. Case in point: Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.

Maybe his style wouldn't have gelled entirely with the MCU, but that can be a good thing. If Marvel gets too comfortable, they'll start taking less risks and their will become more homogenized and samey. It's why I like Daredevil. It may be dark and violent, but that kind of tone shines a new light onto the MCU.

It's also not encouraging that Peyton Reed isn't a good director and his filmography is less than stellar.

More American is always a step in the right direction. So Wasp's a bitch? Maybe we'll see Pym land that infamous backhand.

I think people will be surprised about it mainly because they aren't expecting much.

Much like Guardians surprised most.

I think he leans too much to the comedic side of things myself.

@blackandyellow the backhand will be known as the big ben

@CaptainObvious Down with Love and Bring It On are great! Russos' filmography wasn't impressive, same goes with Favreau, Whedon, Gunn, etc. Reed also had the best F4 pitch before Tim Story got the gig (ew). Helps that he has huge credibility in comedy (Bob Odenkirk, David Cross's Mr Show) and was in the running for another Marvel gig (Guardians).

Wow, I'm glad they made this movie take itself more seriously.

I honestly had no idea what to expect when it comes to the tone of the movie. Some said it was an outright comedy, while others said it was copying GOTG.

I'm relieved that the movie has an edge after all, and that there are more conflicts than generic good vs evil stuff.

"For one thing Marvel have let me explore the dark side of Hank Pym, this tortured, guilt-ridden guy. I love that this is a mentor/pupil story, but with a [frick]ed up pupil and a really [frick]ed up mentor." - Peyton Reed

"It's star Evangeline Lilly (who describes Hope Van Dyne as "kind of a bitch...a very had woman on a journey towards becoming a decent person" " - Evangeline Lilly

Damn, this shit sounds more like Watchmen than Guardians of The Galaxy, and it has me STOKED.

I'm still keeping my excitement in check, though, since Marvel execs could cut out all the good stuff, and the above mentioned might just be 0,0001 % of the final product.

i guess the script was too smart for your average marvel goer
time to dumb it down and add another 30 minutes of action.
