Kevin Feige On Balancing Cosmic And Tech-Based Bits In THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON

Considering The Avengers will enter the Age of a very technology-based villain, Kevin Feige was asked how the God of Thunder and other cosmic elements will fit in Joss Whedon's anticipated sequel.

In light of the early indications post-The Avengers that Marvel's Cinematic Universe would be going cosmic, director Joss Whedon surprised many at Comic-Con earlier this year when he announced that Earth's Mightiest Heroes would take on a very technology-based villain in the 2015 sequel.

How will Thor fit in the Age of Ultron was one of several things Screenrant asked Kevin Feige when they sat down with the Marvel producer for Thor: The Dark World. “Finding that balance has always been what that cinematic universe has been about,” answered Feige. “Iron Man is a very technological hero his movies are always technologically based. The first ‘Thor’ was all about introducing Asgard and Thor in that more fantastical realm into the more reality-based MCU, and explain that obviously it might look like magic, but it’s another form of science and technology. As we go into Ultron clearly he does come out of technology, but we’re using all of our tools at our disposal that we’ve established so far as part of the MCU to build the storyline of ‘Age of Ultron.’” Check out video of the full interview below! What do you think?

Starring Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Cobie Smulders, Jeremy Renner, Samuel L. Jackson and James Spader, with Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen in negotiations to join, The Avengers: Age of Ultron is directed by Joss Whedon from his screenplay, and is slated to begin production in March 2014 and release on May 1, 2015.

im so excited for the future of marvel studios, regardless of what people thought of iron man 3 or thor the dark world,i really enjoyed them,i thought their strengths outweighed their weaknesses for me, they were not my favorite of the 4 released this year, that goes to the wolverine, i prefered iron man 3 over thor the dark world because i thought it had a little more meat to it,for the lack of a better term,i hope cap 2 and guardians(especially) are good or even great,i am gonna go in their with no expectations and judge the films on their own merits

I think pretty much Ultron is going to get the armor from destroyer, making him pretty tough for Thor to take down.

I think all the heroes will have something to do with Ultron's creation, not just Tony

Is it too early to discuss and guess how Ultron will be created?!

If not my guess is that James Spader will play Hank Pym (swerve ball) and he will be working for Shield. He will researching a glowing green stone that has been found on Earth but is not of this planet. This gem will steal his soul and destroy his body and Shield will think Pym has disappeared.

The stone will in fact be the soul gem.

Tony Stark will design a new suit based on the Destroyer and will infuse it with the green stone in the hope of making a unstoppable government weapon controlled by A.I. (Jarvis).

Pym's soul (James Spader) which has been corrupted by the gem, will then take over the suit as Ultron, he will destroy Jarvis and will want to consume the souls of all of Earth

This way we have technology, cosmic, infinity gem, Hank Pym, etc...

I just hope the government/SHIELD decides the Avengers are too uncontrollable and decide to design their own artificial intelligence as an alternative. With this in mind they initiate the Ultron Initiative to incorporate all of their powers (Stark tech, Banner's intelligence, Cap's vibranium, Thor's indestructibility, Widow's fighting, Hawkeye's arsenal) together under a computerized system. Ultron goes rouge realizing that humanity is flawed and not worth saving in its imperfection. He takes over SHIELD government defense systems and goes about the business of annihilating the planet.

The Avengers find help in a duo of hidden protectors among their ranks from a race known as the Inhumans. Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch come in and help the Avengers defeat the global threat to reveal the existence of an unknown 'alien' race located on the Moon and Earth.

First up, I asked Taylor about the reshoots and while he was very clear to say they were not “reshoots,” but “additional photography,” he gave some insight into the Marvel process:

It’s my experience with the Marvel process they save a portion of the budget for this and what we were basically doing. A lot of it was getting more Loki stuff, because we realized how successful he was in the movie, so we sort of “Loki-ed it up” a little bit.

So what scenes specifically?

Well there’s a scene that we probably shouldn’t identify too much, that’s one of the funniest scenes in the movie where Loki’s a shapeshifter. That was a very, very late addition. And there’s a connective thing at the beginning that bridges from The Avengers story to sort of explain how Loki is in prison or why he is in prison. That was a very, very late addition. That was probably “more Loki is a good thing,” but also we decided it was an expositional link that was needed for the audience. So those are two examples of Loki stuff.

After the prologue, that bridge scene is the first scene in the movie. You see Loki before you see Thor.

Taylor also spoke up about the Whedon thing and how it’s a normal part of the Marvel process:

Also, with the Marvel process, at least with my experience with this one, is the script is in flux not up until you shoot; it’s in flux while you are shooting. I got into trouble for saying Joss Whedon had come in and rewritten some scenes we were shooting and I stand by it, it was great. He came in. He’s a genius. He fixed the scene and left, but the rewriting process continues through post as far as they were concerned. That takes some getting used to. It wasn’t a negative process, it was just a different process. Coming from TV, the writer is god, and you have a script and that’s what you do. In this one the script is like the last thing. I think we worked out the script right before we locked picture.

So, again, which scenes did Whedon write?

The thing he was brought in to help with was not a comedy scene, it was an emotional scene between Thor and Jane. I think he also did a pass with one of my favorite scenes, Thor and Loki talking in the Asgardian skiff at night when the brothers actually have time together to talk. That was one of my favorite scenes and I think he had a pass on that.

Later, I asked Tom Hiddleston about the additions and he both confirmed Taylor’s examples were the only two, and spoke about shooting them:

[The bridge scene and morphing] were the only scenes [added], yeah. What does it do, adding scenes? It’s interesting, because I had actually always wanted there to be that scene with Odin. I remember saying when I first got the draft of the script, “Shouldn’t he have a scene with Odin where you see them lock horns one more time?” So I was very glad to do that and I think it makes more sense of the references to Odin all the way through the film.

And the morphing scene was just so fun. It was just adding more mischief, more playfulness to the character. His charm is so much of the character and is a facet I love to play. I suppose the challenge of adding stuff later is just trying to capture the same psychological and emotional continuity, because there were many months between… Of course when you’re shooting, that’s when you’re focused solely on that particular job and then once you wrap you go off and get distracted by other things, other projects in your life. So it’s having the discipline to shift back into the right gear, but it was worth it.

So, when you see Thor: The Dark World later this week, those are three particular scenes to be on the look out for. The first scene after the title, which is a bridge from The Avengers. That was a late addition. A Loki morphing scene, also a late addition with a Whedon touch. And an emotional scene on a skiff between Loki and Thor, which Whedon wrote.

I GOT THIS FROM SLASHFILM AND ITS ABOUT THE THOR ADITIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY THEY DID AND WHAT SCENES JOSS WORKED ON!!

Iron-Lego 3 is pure shit.

[frick] that Mandarim twist. I didn't mind at all about that.

The problem of the film was the edition in all fight sequences that didn't allowed us to see the actual fights scenes clearly.

The problem was that in any instant we believe that those threats could really affect the hero and, consequentially, the narrative never offers any degree of tension.

And of course...

The most ANNOYING KID OF THE MARVEL UNIVERSE.

ezio619 - 11/11/2013, 12:26 PM
richard-thats weird because i personally thought the editing was quite good and frenetic which is maybe why u thought that and compared the todays shaky cam usage for action sequences,i loved it, the kid is again a tastes issue,i enjoyed that dynamic but i can understand why others dont and the tension is not there pretty much at all ,the air force one sequence was good but when u find out its just a suit and him not in it,it does get rid of the tension, again some people thought it was really cool and it added to his arc that the man makes the suit, not the suit that makes the man and some that think it gets rid of the tension completely which again its a matter of perspective

I definitely think the Destroyer is going to play a part in Ultron's creation. In Avengers we saw they were making weapons based on it. As for the other ingredients in the Ultron stew, I see some interesting theories above but I think we'll be able to see it all coming. At this point I'm looking forward to the next Captain America and Guardians of the Galaxy.

I doubt they'll just be one version of Ultron, there will be probably be different models to specifically deal with The Avengers, A Destroyer model for Thor, A Hulkbuster model for Hulk, a tech savy and arc reactor powered model for Iron Man etc, The Ultron figurehead, which will presumably have Spader's face will be comprised of all of these "upgrades" at the end but start out as weak and "evolve" with each new upgrade that is tested as the film progresses.

It's kinda annoying that Marvel dismisses the magical element of the Thor world, the realms, weapons, creatures, etc.
Saying it's another form of science is weak..how will they explain Dr.Strange & his abilities & such?
Oh,it's not magic its..SHUT UP ASSWIPE!..it's magic!!
