The Correct Viewing Order of the Marvel Cinematic Universe

The Correct Viewing Order of the Marvel Cinematic Universe

The other day an article was posted claiming to show the correct order of MCU releases. I'm here to tell you that it was a heaping pile of bullcrap. Hit the jump to see what order they're really in!

Editorial Opinion
By GliderMan - May 04, 2015 05:05 PM EST

Most people here on CBM know this, but not everyone: Iron Man 2 takes place before The Incredible Hulk. We know this due to several references made as well director Jon Favreu's comments made on Iron Man 2's commentary, towards the end of the film.  And obviously, Captain America: The First Avenger is first, as the majority of the film's plot takes place in the early 40's.

Where people get hung up is Thor and The Incredible Hulk. While I suppose it's no big deal, and people are gonna watch whatever order they're in anyway, I figured I'd clear this up.

The events of Iron Man 2, Thor, and The Incredible Hulk all happen within a few days of each other. Right smack in the middle of Iron Man 2, Director Fury says he has things to deal with in the southwest region--so we know Thor is starting. Later on Agent Coulson actually leaves to deal with those Asgardians. But we also know via a SHIELD screen at the end of Iron Man 2 that The Incredible Hulk has started as well, as we see the fallout from the incident at Culver University.

Open the image in a new tab and zoom in if you need to. This official MCU timeline shows that Thor's events (for the most part--not including the post credits) wrap up before The Incredible Hulk's events wrap up.  This is why it's best to watch Thor before The Incredible Hulk

So here is the best viewing order of all the Marvel Cinematic Universe footage:

Captain America: The First Avenger
Agent Carter
(season one)
Iron Man
Iron Man 2
A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor's Hammer
Thor
The Incredible Hulk
The Consultant
The Avengers
Item 47
Iron Man 3
All Hail The King
Agents of SHIELD
(1x01-1x07)
Thor: The Dark World
Agents of SHIELD
(1x08-1x16)
Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Agents of SHIELD
(1x17-1x22)
Guardians of the Galaxy
Daredevil
(season one)
Agents of SHIELD (2x01-2x19)
Avengers: Age of Ultron
Agents of SHIELD
(2x20-2x22)
Ant-Man

If you look on this list, you'll notice I put Daredevil between the two seasons of Agents of SHIELD. I need to address this. SPOILERS follow.

I have heard several people say that they think Daredevil takes place in between Avengers and Iron Man 3, as there are no references to any Phase Two happenings. While this is true, I think Fury's SHIELD would have shown up in the season finale of Daredevil, when they're taking down Wilson Fisk and all his associates. One could argue that it's really none of their business, but this is dealing with a vigilante in Hell's Kitchen who is taking big matters into his own little hands, and simply refuses to go away--besides the fact that Matt Murdock is technically enhanced. The reason only the FBI show up is because the intelligence organization SHIELD is now much smaller and completely different--and busy fighting Hydra.

You'll also notice I left out the Agent Carter one-shot. This is because I am completely certain this one-shot is no longer canon. I could go on and on about how the character's arcs contradict each other for them both to be canon, but I'll trust that most of you are smart enough to notice this. I already wrote another article and I'm getting hungry as [frick]. Writer Christopher Markus said "we all agree and understand that [keeping continuity with the short is] going to get tougher if we continue" making the series.

So there they all are, my gift to you. Ignore it, use it, but if you don't use it you're going to Hell. Have a great evening!

I don't understand these articles. Will people actually watch one film, then a one-shot or a batch of episodes and then on to another film in that order just to get that seamless timeline of the MCU?

I'm not dogging anyone who takes this much time out to create such a timeline as I like reading these articles too, but I honestly wonder if anyone takes such to heart and watches it all in such a correct timeline.

Plus, I'd still put The First Avenger right before The Avengers. TFA is bookend in the present day so it's just a huge flashback in the middle just as how you got flashbacks in the Thor films.

I agree with basically all of this

Pretty impressive. @mistersuperior it's a pretty similar order to how I watched it all in the lead up to age of ultron. I left out the tv portions because, while they do inform the universe which allows them to maintain my weekly and binge watching viewership, they aren't really necessary to the timeline of the films.

@GliderMan @Bulldawg2014

You both basically made my point. While you both said you do take the timeline to heart, you also said you just watch the films, so no....this timeline doesn't matter, really. Watching the films in correct order to get ready for a future film like AoU in a marathon-like way is like watching The Dark Knight Trilogy in a marathon-like way....it's a fun way to watch these films in a consecutive way but you're not watching batches of episode, then a film or a one shot then a film.

excellent article.

However I will fight a ho to the death over the chronological vs release order.

Release order is the only way to watch it. THE ONLY WAY!*

*with a few slight adjustments (the one shots inserted where they fit best storywise. Daredevil being put between chunks of Agents of SHIELD instead of during the middle of the Inhumans/NuSHIELD story arc.

I too said these timelines are nice but the replies even on here towards my question tells me that no, people don't actually watch it all in one cohesive and correct timeline from start to finish.

I'm afraid you view my comments as bashing this, but no, I'm not.

@Gliderman I love the order but Incredible Hulk falls before Thor and actually at the same time as ironman 2. You see this in the ironman 2 when tony stark and ironman sit down to talk the avengers initiative

Would be very strange to see hulk ending scene in ironman 2 for the casual viewer which basically spoils the end destruction then watch it 2 movies later

It's right there, man. I only asked if anyone will ever do this and so far I haven't gotten one 'yes'. I don't know why you're getting so confused. I'm fine with these entries, but my question was if anyone would ever watch it in such a order, and the answer is no.

Is it a fun idea, yes, and I don't know why @GliderMan didn't read that part in my original comment but seems so vexed with my comment that no one would quite frankly just watch it in that actual order; that is no criticism on him for actually making this.
MisterSuperior

@GliderMan

Your confusion continues. You first didn't understand my question, even though you clearly answered it as others have did.....and you focus too much attention on my question more than my comments on you doing a good job with the timeline. If you want to act like an ass, then you're doing a good job. Can't take any other opinions as yours, huh?

No, I will not stop, unless you apologize. You also brought up my first sentence even without regarding this:

"I'm not dogging anyone who takes this much time out to create such a timeline as I like reading these articles too"

You, as I stated already, seem so focused on this idea that I'm badmouthing your editorial when I'm clearly not and others on here obviously don't have a problem with my comments as much as you so clearly you're being biased when you say you're fine with anyone's comments....unless they raise a question, a question that I clearly have my answer to and you're continuing trying to state that no, what you and others have said are wrong, that people do take these timelines to heart.

Listen man...."

Your condescending tone, even on the internet, just because I called you 'man' was not needed, hence why I called you an ass. You didn't have to add anything to help me understand, as I did not have a misunderstanding with this issue if you read my very first comment about me liking these articles but asking if anyone would actually follow the timeline. You said you will one day, but so far you haven't and no one else seem to have done so.

Simply put, the last two or three comments from either of us weren't needed.

@GliderMan

Being offended is not the same as feeling as if someone's being condescending. You need to understand the difference before you ask me like three questions in a row of 'where I'm from'. I called you 'man' first and you replied in the very same way. That, to me, was a condescending tone just because I called you 'man'. If that was actually offending, then I'd hear something from you, hence you can see I called you 'man'. If I thought it was offensive I wouldn't even say it, but as a means of saying it the same way as I did on your follow-up comment, I'm utterly shocked that you're even suggesting I shouldn't find it one bit condescending.

And you're confused about my initial comment anyways. I am aware of WHY these timelines are made, but my question if what's the point of the editorials period when I followed it up with the basis that people won't ever watch the timeline in such an order.

Sure, I can call you a pussy and you can call me one two, but you still need to understand that being offended had nothing to do with what I brought up.

"Geez laweez" indeed.
