AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Spoiler-Free Review; "It Will Chew You Up, Spit You Out And Leave You A Shell Of A Fan"

Avengers: Infinity War is now in theaters but does it live up to those insanely high expectations and celebrate the Marvel Cinematic Universe's anniversary in a fiiting fashion? Here's our verdict...

It's hard to know where to begin. Marvel Studios has taken us on a ten-year journey spanning eighteen movies to bring us to Avengers: Infinity War and to say that expectations are high would be an understatement. Thankfully, the Russo Brothers deliver in every conceivable way with a massive superhero ensemble which balances countless characters with the Marvel Cinematic Universe's best villain (sorry Killmonger...you too, Loki). I'm still not sure how the filmmakers made this work but nearly everyone manages to get the spotlight they deserve, with only one or two heroes not receiving quite so much screentime as they probably should have. Make no mistake about it, though; this movie belongs to the Mad Titan, Thanos.

Joe and Anthony weren't lying when they said that he's Avengers: Infinity War's lead and Josh Brolin is downright incredible as the character. Better fleshed out than his comic book counterpart has ever been, this Thanos's motivations are easy to buy into and seeing the emotions he goes through as he enacts his plan will no doubt make you relate to him in ways you might find yourself wishing you didn't. He's a fascinatingly complex villain and truly terrifying, while the special effects used to bring him to life are nothing short of incredible. You don't need me to tell you that the rest of the cast also delivers some stellar work and the only real disappointment here are the members of the Black Order. Ebony Maw is memorable but Proxima Midnight and Cull Obsidian fade into the background despite some cool fight scenes and comic book fans will definitely be disappointed by the lack of screentime given to Corvus Glaive.

Now, this is a Marvel Studios movie so it goes without saying that the special effects are superb and the Russos deliver more of their trademark action scenes which are akin to seeing the source material come to life. Alan Silvestri's score is also a triumph and there's nothing here which doesn't work, particularly when it comes to how the directors jump from one group of characters to the next.

Despite claims to the contrary, Avengers: Infinity War is without a doubt the first of a two-part story. Despite that, it's still an immensely satisfying experience and the key word there is "experience." This is more than a movie, it's an event and one which will leave you experiencing the following:

  • Full body chills
  • Shocks so big your jaw will literally drop
  • Laughter
  • Tears
  • Uncontrollable rocking back and forth as you wait for Avengers 4 to be released
So, yes, Avengers: Infinity War is a triumph and a release which demands multiple viewings, a great deal of discussion, and high praise indeed for being the best comic book movie of all-time. Black Panther was arguably more important culturally but this is superhero cinema at its finest and nothing short of a masterpiece. The Russos have achieved the impossible and delivered a fitting celebration of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's tenth anniversary and a truly incredible film.

Avengers: Infinity War will chew you up, spit you out, and leave you a shell of a man fan in the best way possible, especially after THAT ending. Another huge win for Marvel Studios, there's not a chance in hell you'll walk out of the cinema
 disappointed with this epic masterpiece.

Holy crap does anyone here follow FilmGob. I swear to god.

@Kurne - Is Andre that crazy snyderbot that posts on Youtube nonsensical videos about Justice League being the best movie of the universe and WB/DCEU beating the shit out of Marvel/Disney?

@Ryuzaki -
Andre trolls for the sake of getting views - for some reason most on this site does not seem to understand that and constantly refrences him. Unfortunately most this site feed him with views thinking he's actually being serious rather than just playing them.

Soundtrack details have been released! For anyone who has seen the movie. How is the score? Is it memorable or just there?

Would recommend the soundtrack primarily for the music associated with the scenes Thanos has. Though with the soundtrack being released online you can always re-listen to a few of the pieces when it's inneviteably uploaded to Youtube before deciding to purchase.

Favourite piece is unfortunately the second shorterst track 22 - Porch.

@Scarilian - I never buy soundtracks but I’m really looking forward to this being the first one I purchase. But yeah tonight I will know if it’s worth it.

"there's not a chance in hell you'll walk out of the cinema disappointed"

The only aspect that disappointed me was the handling of the ending, a lot of the emotional weight was lost in the ending due to the acting and dialogue being weaker than prior scenes of a similar nature in other movies. If the ending 10 minutes was acted better or if certain characters filled the role of others then the ending would have had much more dramatic and had more emotional effect. Instead it feels weightless compared to the rather emotionally and action heavy movie that preceeded it.

Though the film does have other issues it suffer from a lot of moments where characters do dumb things to allow the plot to progress OR moments that were set-up in prior films and then not delivered upon - most of these i can look past as the film series has changed overtime though.

It's currently resting at the bottom of my top 5 until i've re-watched, will drop lower depending on to what extent aspects are undone in Avengers 4.

@Ineedrevelation -
I know many feel the same regarding the ending - many of whom briefly mentioned it during the time we were unable to discuss spoilers. I doubt anyone truly believes the ending will remain unchanged - despite comments from the Russo's and Feige. It weakened the movie for me after the deaths and situations prior - which actually felt like they could be permanent.

@ThePanther -
Not in the slightest, surely you and 'INeedRevelation' understand why i feel this way regarding the ending? The ending is flawed and the acting is definitely weaker.

Compare for example specific characters interacting in the ending to how they interacted prior in the MCU regarding circumstances of deaths or faking deaths. They were more emotional, raw and powerful than what occured in the movie which was done for shock value. I dont think we saw a single character shed a tear or scream in the ending for example.

For example, look at the level of emotion in these scenes;

A) Pays off as the space epic from 10 yrs of build mimicking the COMICBOOK (when it comes to ambition) - A few critic headlines “Its too much/should have scaled back a bit/way too bloated”

B) Takes up screen time with Peter Quill and Tony Stark sitting down picking grass talking about their daddy issues - Same critics headlines “For something that has been in the making for 10 yrs, it’s rather disappointing. For an Infinity War too much mingling not enough eeeppiicc/ambition.”

You do know, "Leave you a shell of a fan," would mean it will leave you empty inside. I know you are trying to be clever, but this make no sense. If I was a fan of the MCU it chewed me up, spit me out, and made me a shell of a fan, I would no longer be a fan of the MCU. This isn't a good review if you are saying this. I am a huge fan of DC comics, but this is what I would have said about the New 52. It literally means you are beaten up by something you love to the point you no longer love it and you now feel empty.
