As the bonus features on the home release can attest to,
Avengers: Infinity War had its fair share of deleted scenes. And as we’ve learned since its theatrical release in 2018, there were also some scrapped ideas that were never shot, including
an appearance from the Living Tribunal.
Now, while
speaking with IGN’s David Griffin, writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely have revealed another scene that was tossed out before production began, a scene that would have given audiences a look at Captain America and his Secret Avengers much earlier in the film.
“We wrote it, we didn’t shoot it,” Markus explained.
“It was part and parcel of a whole thing where we realized we were picking up the characters too early in their arc before Thanos had gotten to them. It was a scene of basically Widow and Falcon and Cap in hiding post-Civil War and they’d just been through a big fight with criminals, and Cap was eating mashed potatoes, and Falcon says 'You’re bleeding into your mashed potatoes.' He looks at him like…yeah he is bleeding into his mashed potatoes. I remember Kevin [Feige] going 'He’s bleeding into his mashed potatoes?! I don’t want to see that!' Yeah, maybe we went a little too…something.”
While Markus suggests this moment was nixed because it introduced the then on-the-run heroes sooner than they needed to, Kevin Feige’s reaction to the content of the scene likely means they would have faced at least some push-back if they thought it deserved to be kept in the film.
Either way, what do you folks think of the scrapped moment? Would you have liked to have seen it in the final cut of
Avengers: Infinity War? To share your thoughts, leave a comment below.
