IRON MAN 3 And THE PREDATOR Director Shane Black Pokes Fun At AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Villain

While promoting The Predator at San Diego Comic-Con yesterday evening, Iron Man 3 director Shane Black poked some good-natured fun at Thanos from Avengers: Infinity War. Does he have a point, though?...

As well received as The Russo Brothers' Avengers: Infinity War was, there were one of two elements that didn't hold up so well under closer scrutiny - something The Predator director Shane Black had some fun with during his SDCC  panel yesterday.

Black was asked for his thoughts on the Marvell epic, and while he was quick to stress that he did really enjoy the movie, he did point out an inconsistency in the universe-altering powers Thanos gained by using The Infinity Stones.

"One moment there’s a train coming at him he can turn it into a flock of birds, the next minute Spider-Man is coming at him and he’s like, ‘Oh, my eyes! It’s got webbing!’ I loved the movie, it’s just, the kid had to do something, so.."

Though hardly a huge deal, this is something that the film's detractors bring up on a fairly regular basis, and it's certainly not without merit.

If a character like The Mad Titan can literally bend reality to his will whenever he chooses, then why doesn't he when it'd get him out of a bind? After all, we see him wave his hand at the GOTG and turn them into human (well, alien) slinkys in an earlier scene, so why doesn't he just do the same thing when ambushed by Iron Man and co. on Titan?

You could argue that he didn't have time to react (personally, I think that scene was handled very well), but it does open up the floor for an interesting debate.

Tell us, what do you make of Black's comments? Sound off in the usual place.

@litobirdy - Possibly,,, at least to an extent. I take his point but it's really a weak criticism when you take into account how great the movie was overall.

@RorMachine - black ruined my favorite comic hero so he's just sayign stuff at this point in reference to when peter's jumping at him after he just had a building or ship thrown off him. plus he doesn't have the omnisense like in the comics so if a fast character is being teleported at different angles not sure what blacks talking about .......

@litobirdy - True, but he was also shown to be sympathetic and to kill only when necessary. This is odd because the previous set-up that Russo's didn't direct made it seem like Thanos was just a murderer and conqueror. I guess the Russo's opted out of that "simplistic view" and made him more complex and psychologically crazy.

He was similar to Apocalypse in X-Men:Apoc. Apocalypse didn't kill all of the X-men at the ending because that wasn't his motive. He just wanted to reshape earth based on survival of the fittest.

@RorMachine @knocturnalzen10 - He has a point. The movie is good and loved by many but it's not flawless. There are many plotholes but as he mentioned the choices made in the film are more to service fans. Thor could have aimed for thano's head or arm to kill or dismantle Thanos before the snap. Dr strange could have used a portal to cut off thano's arm or head like he did to 1 of the aliens in the beginning. There are countless possibilities to avoid the snap and many of the battles.

Shane Black is a huge comic book fan. I remember reading an article that he campaigned to adapt many comic book films before blade 1, but hollywood did not want to fund it at that time. I like what he did with Iron Man 3 and the villain because it was unexpected. All of Iron Man 3 went against the "generic formula" in phase 1 and focused on Tony Stark instead of "iron man". His relationship with Pepper also progressed better than Iron Man 2, which was a slugfest.

@RorMachine - Remember when he was ambushed by the Hulk. Ebony Maw told Cull to "Let him have his fun." So it was established that Thanos does indeed enjoy a challenge

@mastakilla39 - -_- i'm the hugest IM on this site ..... what that film was rubbish per them working together in kiss kiss -bang bang so i.e tony isn't in the suit as much .... ok i'm fine with that, but not really .... but the dude is such a comic book he rolled 3 IM story arc's into one which made no sense for the arcs he used. implied pepper is thoting with killian previously but has the stones to be upset with tony and halls character .....pepper saving the day on some conan strats , and even having tony destroying his suits ( which he just won't do). i can even somewhat understand the racial idea's of what madarian is but what was given to use is a shell even outside of the ignorant original tone of the character. per what the movie was, they could've used tony's brother or finished rockwell's arc from IM2 to complete the circle.....

@mastakilla39 - and IM3 did extremely well on the coats of AV1

@knocturnalzen10 - It’s a film and it’s not uncommon to take the best of 3 arcs to make 1 movie. Thor Ragnarok is a mix and Homecoming took ideas from “every spider-man verse” so your just nitpicking. This was supposed to be RDJ’s final IM film, that’s why it ended on a happy and open-ending with Tony destroying all his suits. Pepper was mad at Tony because he is a “known playboy” and thought they were serious as she finally moved into his house. Pepper was not a thot and Happy Hogan was the 1 hinting she had a thing for Killian. Pepper saved the day because in every IM film Tony never defeats the villain alone and always had help. IM 1 Pepper killed Iron Monger with the overcharge button and IM 2 Whiplash was defeated by both IM/WM. It’s a homage and trope for his solos and final outing.

Could Mandarin have been better? Yes.
Did Marvel care? No, they have been outspoken that Mandarin is a stupid racist character and that’s why he was made a joke.

Marvel consulted Chinese financiers about an accurate depiction and they said “No”. They worked with the Chinese producers to cast Ben Kingsley for the twist and exclusive footage. IM 2 was worst, they wasted the armored wars and demon in the bottle arc. Hammer was equally a gimmick as Mandarin. Marvel never “retreads prequels”. Only filmmaker to retread is the Russos and that was their choice. Most directors don’t bring back anything they did not “start”. This was why Waititi made Whedon and Taylor’s setup for Thor:Ragnarok a joke and changed its serious tone.

All Marvel films benefit from Avengers, it's ultimate success came from Chinese backers and RDJ's popularity. If IM 3 was so bad why did every solo film until black panther do worst?

knocturnalzen10 - 7/20/2018, 10:23 AM
@mastakilla39 - i'm clearly more impartial to a IM as you can see but as i stated those 3 arcs took away from where tony's arc should've ended ....yes he's a known playboy but you do know there was supposed to be a sex tape with killian that was cut and there interaction is just so be implied .... and yes it's know tony's a playboy but if he's clearly on focused on finding mandarin after what happened to happy those points are foolish. for you to find positives in this film when it's clear RDJ power ran that boat and he found a director to convey that. yes mandarin is a racist character but you're stating different vantage points couldn't be used to convey the character better or tweaking the origin. i'm part asian most black but i understand the character can evolve. Even per this article thanos used to rob banks and we've seen his change. another example is mr sinster used to be a garbage villain til his most recent entry in comics. thought process has to be extensive for mandarin but it could've been done. and there's a huge difference in unsuccessful marvel film and the film exactly right after AV was in theaters breaking records like unseen before for a cbm film..... aside from tdk being well received , no one saw a train like AV at that time.

Well, I think the point was... he couldn’t see some things coming and he COULD see other things.

Shane, you’re a hack and Iron Man 3 is the worst MCU film. Shut up.

@BringFFtoMCU - A hack? Has anyone here ever read a Shane Black script? Lethal Weapon, Predator, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, I mean has ANYONE seen how he writes? Amazing writer. Breaking the mold for screenwriters with his style of writing (which I too use, Vince Gilligan and many others)

You dislike the movie, big Marvel fan, get it, got it, good. BUT. You gotta give credit where it is due.

@fundamentallyOT - I feel that. The twist will never completely sit right with me being that I am an actual Mandarin fan. I really dislike Iron Man 3 for the longest because of it, but rewatching recently I’ve found it much more enjoyable than I remembered. I think it’ll continue to age well
