Marvel Studios may be reevaluating its future plans for the Multiverse Saga, but another big casting rumour is doing the rounds on social media this weekend.
Yes, we're talking about Avengers: Secret Wars again and another of those original Avengers that Marvel Studios is supposedly so keen on enlisting for its grand finale to this current era of storytelling. Earlier this week, we told you that Robert Downey Jr. has reportedly signed on the dotted line to play Iron Man again, and now Chris Evans is said to be on board to return as Captain America.
Once again, we have no idea whether he will star as a Variant or the original Steve Rogers (heck, for all we know, he might suit up as the Human Torch). What we can say, though, is that this is very good news.
The last time Evans played Cap was in Avengers: Endgame; in the movie's closing moments, he returned to the present day after travelling back in time - presumably to a branched timeline - as an old man and gifted Sam Wilson his shield, passing the mantle of Captain America to his friend in the process.
However, Steve was absent from The Falcon and The Winter Soldier and all we know is the former Avenger is "gone." The Statue of Liberty has since been redesigned in Cap's honour, suggesting the world believes he's dead (and he very well may be).
As for Avengers: Secret Wars, a role for the original Captain America is a must. As far as we're aware, only Scarlett Johannson is left to be enlisted for an MCU return, so here's hoping Kevin Feige has fully smoothed things over with the actress after former Disney CEO Bob Chapek decided to take her to task for wanting what she was owed after Black Widow largely bypassed theaters for Disney+'s short-lived Premier Access platform.
Some fans are thrilled at the possibility of the original six Avengers assembling again, while others feel it's a misstep on Marvel Studios' part. After all, we've already bid farewell to the Infinity Saga's take on Earth's Mightiest Heroes, so do we need to do so again? It will come down to story and, with the Multiverse at play, there's likely fun to be had here.
What role do you think Captain America should play in Avengers: Secret Wars?
