Marvel Studios may have announced two new Avengers movies during Comic-Con, but they didn't reveal who will take the helm of The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars. Now, we know it won't be the Russo brothers...

As per usual, Marvel Studios stole the show in Hall H at the San Diego Comic-Con, with Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars among Kevin Feige's biggest announcements.

While both movies will be released in 2025, there was no mention of either writers or directors, suggesting that information is being saved for a later date. Needless to say, the second we saw "Secret Wars," we assumed Avengers: Endgame helmers Joe and Anthony Russo would be in charge of that movie, at the very least.

After all, the Russos have talked on several occasions about that being their dream project, but during an interview with Deadline, the Marvel Studios President appeared to confirm they won't be returning to the MCU quite yet.

"They’re not connected to it," Feige reveals in the video below. "They’ve been very direct about that. We love them, they love us. We want to find something to do together, it’s not this."

That's honestly a little jaw-dropping, but the trade notes that there have been no talks between Marvel Studios and the Russo Brothers about these new Avengers movies. Apparently, they're unable to commit due to the fact they have three feature projects like up with AGBO, and we'd guess they wanted a slightly longer break before potentially returning for Secret Wars

Asked to specify how Phase 5 and 6 will differ thematically from what we've seen before, Feige was reluctant to give too much away about The Multiverse Saga. He explained, "The truth is, all of our stories are both interconnected and hopefully stand apart. It’s only now even that we see what the thematics of one, two and three are.  We have various ideas as we head into them. But the specifics we like to be uncovered project by project."

It's going to be a wild few years, and Feige looks set to be stretched thin as the MCU continues to expand. There was a lot we didn't hear about during last night's Comic-Con panel, so expect more big reveals to drop during Disney+ Day and D23 this September.

Are you disappointed that the Russos won't be back for the next Avengers movies?

@ClungeAndThunda - TBH I'm OK with some new blood.. and if you think of it the Russos have technically already done 4 avengers movies.

Maybe they got Watts to stay on board with the MCU. He's proven he can do an ensemble piece with his latest and leaving F4 for this maybe gives him more time? Just a fan wish.

@ClungeAndThunda -

Then, Who? Maybe Taika?

The title should be: Avengers 5 "Not another stupid superhero movie"

@UniqNo - Same but I would imagine the last two avengers movies will be a tough act to follow and only a director with big balls might wanna tackle the next one.

I think they'll do X-men
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 7/24/2022, 9:24 AM
@TheManWithoutFear - X-Men will be in Phase 6. If the reason they aren't doing the 2 Avengers movies is because they already have too many projects, and the Secret Wars is the end if Phase 6, then I doubt they'll do a different movie in Phase 6 that comes out even before Secret Wars.

@WruceBayne - Secret Wars is scheduled for November, 2025. So it looks like phase 5 and phase 6 will both be about a year and a half?

Never thought we'd see Secret Wars so soon, not gonna lie.

Lowkey think this is a mistake but i honestly don't even know what they want to do, so...

@Doomsday8888 - My guess is that it's going to be one last excuse to bring together the original six (in multiverse-form) to cash in on the nostalgia for these actors roughly 15 years after their debut. That seems to correspond to the Hugh Jackman model for Wolverine.

Instead of the more dour Logan-esque super-dark future, maybe we'll get a chance to see a variant Avenger team that held together through the Infinity Saga so we can get a hint at a slightly sappy happy ending for them all (without it killing the ongoing drama of 616). Maybe it's the alternate universe where Cap went back to be with Peggy, so we can see what history looks like with Steve's guiding hand.

These actors can always come back again later, of course. But if we're talking about movies in the 2030s or beyond, I think the technology and culture is changing so much that the MCU may start to genuinely feel its age at that point. Marvel is approaching a point in time where there will always be a generation of people nostalgic for some aspect of the MCU. If the snake doesn't eat its own tail completely, then this may be the new normal. There's always someone coming back, always someone retiring, always a reunion, always a new debut, always a spin-off around the corner.

That's how comics have been for a very long time, and... while that medium isn't exactly thriving under the weight of 60 years of uninterrupted canonicity, they do march on.

@Spock0Clock

Fingers crossed for Secret Wars II then! :D

Unless this is SWII, how big can you get after this?
Should've been Endgame-tier, bigger than that actually, but now i dunno...TWO Avengers movie in one year?
Dates locked but not the directors but we know it's not the Russos?
Ehhhhhhhh we'll see, but heh....

@Doomsday8888 - I think it's an odd choice too. I kinda expected that, if they were doing a two-parter, I would be Kang Dynasty/Forever, not Secret Wars.

But not that it turns out it is Secret Wars, I wonder which one. Is the original comic run, Secret Wars II, or the 2015 run? I hope it isn't the latter, because I want God Emperor Doom with more build-up
Doomsday8888
Doomsday8888 - 7/24/2022, 5:24 AM
@bkmeijer1
And the Mutants, what about them!

Is Secret Wars going to be filled with variants of all the freshly, barely introduced characters we've just recently met?
Are we REALLY sure we'll see Evans and RDJ?
This project just proved to me that we take too many things for granted.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 7/24/2022, 5:27 AM
@Doomsday8888 - I think we'll see The Mutants being May 2026, and be the focus of the next saga.

Hope Secret Wars will just be already introduced characters from the MCU. Only variants I want to see are Iron Man, Captain America and Black Widow.
SuperiorHeckler
SuperiorHeckler - 7/24/2022, 8:14 AM
@bkmeijer1 - Although the thought of a reality-warping, omnipotent (yet utterly naive) being like The Beyonder would have extreme potential, I unfortunately don't see that happening. 🫤

I agree with you about God Doom. No time for a proper build-up.

So, that leaves us with Kang taking over the 'God Doom' role for a 'Secret Wars 2015' interpretation. Makes sense when you think about it: 'Kang Dynasty' will see Kang assume the power-base that the heroes will have to combat and overcome for 'Secret Wars' (which will simply be the sequel to 'Kang Dynasty' as 'Endgame' was to 'Infinity War'.) 🤔

bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 7/24/2022, 8:18 AM
@SuperiorHeckler - I do hope Kang doesn't take over the role of God Emperor Doom, but rather that of Beyonder in Secret Wars.

Could be Kang brings Earth and the Avengers to it's knees in Dynasty and transforms Earth into Battleword, and Secret Wars picks up with Kang as the ruler over Battleworld and the Avengers having to (re-)unite to defeat him.

Endgame was 3 years ago, fam.

This should've been the next Endgame, with the proper build-up and everything.
Now they'll barely manage to cook up 1 X-Men movie.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 7/24/2022, 9:28 AM
@bkmeijer1 - There are 8 unannounced projects for Phase 6. I'm betting The Mutants, X-Men, and Deadpool 3 will be 3 of them.

They will 100% want the X-Men to be part of Secret Wars. How could they not?
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 7/24/2022, 9:45 AM
@CorndogBurglar - think Spider-Man 4 and Shang-Chi will also be part of it, and Deadpool 3 makes sense too.

Really think they'll keep the Mutants and the X-Men for the next saga though. Could see a few appear like in Multiverse of Madness or Spider-Man, but no majorly established team. The Avengers movies themselves have to tell a story too, and I think they will do that will a dozen characters tops.
SpaceParanoids
SpaceParanoids - 7/24/2022, 9:46 AM
@Doomsday8888 - I agree. I don’t see how Secret Wars ties into the “Multiverse Saga” anyway, unless Stark and Rogers reappear from the multiverse (different versions of them) and they start some internal war until it’s revealed that they were actually Skrull.

But I think it’s too soon. They have barely set it up.

I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Spock0Clock
Spock0Clock - 7/24/2022, 4:56 AM
@MyCoolYoung - Of their current stable, Coogler would probably be the one that gets me most excited. I wouldn't be super shocked if it turned out to be Peyton Reed, though. (At least for Kang Dynasty.) He's the one building up Kang cinematically, and people underestimate just how [frick]ing good he is as a director of action set-pieces.

The weakness in Reed's movies come from the scripts, I think. And maybe the scope of the budget. If he was theoretically teamed up with Markus/McFeely on one of their better days, I think the result could blow people away.
SpaceParanoids
SpaceParanoids - 7/24/2022, 9:51 AM
@Spock0Clock - Coogler doesn’t excite me when it comes to dealing with an ensemble like those movies. You need a huge comic book fan.

The Russo’s actually handle each character so well in their movies better than the individual directors of films.
In Civil War Spider-Man was perfect and much better than Homecoming.
In Civil War Black Panther was PERFECT and WAY better than Black Panther.
In Infinity War Dr. Strange was amazing and perfect exponentially better than Strange 2.

The closest anyone got to Russo geekdom quality was Joss Whedon with Avengers. Sadly it won’t be the Russos.
