AVENGERS: ENDGAME's Ending Was The First Thing The Russos Developed, Even Before The Plot Of INFINITY WAR

When screenwriters set out to develop screenplays, they often start at the beginning. But in the case of Avengers: Endgame, the final moments of the film were decided before Infinity War was conceived...

As anticipation has been building for Avengers: Endgame, the press tour for has been keeping fans in check. Revealing intriguing details without spoiling anything major when it comes to the plot, Joe and Anthony Russo have served as safekeepers before the film's historical opening weekend.

Speaking to Collider, the directing team did divulge a few details regarding their development process. More specifically, they pinpointed how they came up with then ending, and at which point in development the final moments were decided:

When we were working on both Infinity War and Endgame, the first thing we did was break the ending of Endgame. Because we wanted to know where we were going. It’s very hard to tell a story if you don’t know where you’re going . . . We spent months in a room just talking about a three-page outline. Literally, page one is act one, page two is act two, page three is act three. Because you have to know in a contained document like that, ‘Here’s where we start, here’s what happens in the middle, here’s where it ends.’ If you know that, it’s a lot easier to get to script. A more malleable format to work in a short outline like that, spend your time talking about it and thinking it through."

The team further talked about audience expectations and reactions, stating that they don't often think about how fans would react to critical moments. Instead, the Russos, in addtion to writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, stuck to their guts and moral compasses during the mapping of the duology.

How do you think Avengers: Endgame is going to end?

The Russo Bros are freaking masterminds, every interview they give, their answers are always so sophisticated. They really know the material, they're really the best directors working today.

I really want these guys to stick around in some role in the MCU. They could direct another trilogy after phase 4. I can't believe it's about to be the end of the infinity saga. Ever since Winter soldier when they turned Cap into my favorite character I've been a fan of theirs.I'm glad they did Infinity War and Endgame even though i kinda had my reservations at first.

I’m sure this movie will live up to the hype. It’s gonna be bonkers crazy and super emotional. Expectations are high.

That's actually really smart and I'd guess that'd help you not write yourself into a corner. These guys are legends even if they fail with endgame.

I can imagine sticking to their gut and moral compass was really hard. Making this movie had to be a gut wrenching experience.

I can see Joe, Anthony, Stephen, and Christopher all in a room trying to hatch out a story starting their own mini Civil War

"But that on the page that right there.. That's the end game. How do we plan on beating that?"

"Together"

"We'll lose"

If it's anything like the final sequence in Infinity War, when Thanos slowly walks through all the heroes before snapping his fingers, the ending to Endgame will be the cat's flarking meow.

@PsychoticSpaceRaccoon - wouldn't that be the cat's Flerken meow?

I think Endgame for me is going to be better for me simply because there will be an actual consequence. An actual emotional moment. I have to admit that the heroes dying didn’t have any affect on me because I just knew they would be back. I knew Spidey had another movie coming, I knew they would undo the snap etc. But Endgame? It’ll be the real McCoy.

@Frshcoupe - I mean, some moments still got me in Infinity War. Knowing that FFH was going to shoot like a month after IWs release, Spider-mans death still got me mainly due to the reactions of the characters around. Same goes for characters like Bucky, Groot, Vision, and Gamora.

@AbidNaga - I lied...Gamoras death got me. Because it wasn’t due to the snap.

@Frshcoupe - Yeah, but it's always been pretty obvious FFH takes place before IW. That's why they are on the bus. They are coming home.

although I still don't really understand how there was a point (if even not all that long) where they were genuinely considering having The Snap not be until the first act of "End Game". Just if for no other reason, with what we know how of how long this second movie is, with how much post-Snap story they have to tell, I don't think it was moved just because it would've made this even *longer*, like a 3.5 hour movie. They said how they ultimately decided it would be best to end the first movie on that sort of "cliffhanger". To have really kept the Snap in the second movie, it seems like Infinity War would've been different structurally a fairly significantly different amount.

@Vigor - I'd really like to think you're... not remotely the first person who's told me that lol

I admit, on a couple particular more traditional message boards I've never cared much to hinder my more stream of consciousness-type of "sharing" (& it's not like it's like that ALL the time), but I recognize here's a little different. I will keep it in mind :)
