AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR: Josh Brolin Sheds Further Light On Thanos' Plan As Flashbacks Are Confirmed

Josh Brolin elaborates on Thanos' master plan in Avengers: Infinity War and it's quickly becoming clear that there's more to this villain than meets the eye, hence why we'll be revisiting his early years!

We've known since The Avengers that Thanos wants to get his hands on the Infinity Stones but what exactly is he planning? Yesterday, it was confirmed by Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige that the Mad Titan is looking to wipe out billions of beings in order to restore order to the universe but Josh Brolin hs now shed some light on what exactly we should expect from the villain late next month.

First of all, though, Entertainment Weekly has confirmed that Avengers: Infinity War is going to feature flashbacks to Thanos' youth on Titan, something which is sure to flesh out the character in a way that both The Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy failed to. However, does the villain really have a heart?

"When you see the relationship with Gamora and you see that evolves, God I wish I could tell you. I can’t! When [directors Joe and Anthony Russo] came up to me after we had done maybe three quarters of the film, they said, “It wasn’t necessarily intended that you feel for this guy as much as you do.” Obviously he has a grand plan, like somebody who’s pulling in kids for their own selfish bloodshed. But he has a capacity to love very much and very deeply. You need that for a character like this because if he’s just a cackling madman bent on destroying everything, it’s less interesting.

"He’s different from his family. They’re all Titans and they all look similar, but he was born deformed. You see how he grew up, you see he was like the Quasimodo of this time, or if you’ve ever read Perfume [Patrick Süskind ‘s 1985 novel about a serial killer who craves beautiful scenes but is disgusted by the smell of humanity], it’s a great parallel to Thanos. He stuck out. He was an anomaly. He was a freak. And that lent to this apparent insanity."

As for what Thanos has planned for the universe, Brolin argues that there is some method in the villain's apparent madness and while he may be extremely physically imposing, he's also no fool.

"You want to write him off as insane, and yet what he’s doing makes sense, if you break it down. You think of overpopulation and killing half the universe in order to save the other half and all this kind of stuff. You have this struggle watching him. It’s this love-hate thing, you know? So I don’t know … Who in our society do we love and hate? You see this lughead and this guy who you pigeonhole right from the first cosmetic reaction to him. And what I see is this in this guy’s eyes. This super, super, super intelligence. There’s this constant contrasting thing about this Neanderthalic lughead who’s way more intelligent than anybody else in the movie, by far."

In recent years, Marvel has upped its game when it comes to villains. Thanks to the likes of Zemo and Erik Killmonger, Whiplash and Malekith are a distant memory and it definitely sounds like Thanos is going to make a huge splash in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. What do you guys make of Brolin's remarks? As always, be sure to let us know your thoughts in the comments section down below.

Sounds great! I really hope we get a lot of scenes between him and all his children! Also, here's hoping that they don't cut a lot of his motivations from the movie like they did with Malekith... Also, also, why does everyone hate on Whiplash...?

@Bokis - sounds like we could get some epic discussions between him and vision (if vision lives long enough).

Now can you all shut up about Thanos-in-name-only (TINO).

He's going to be glorious, with or without Lady Death.

"Now can you all shut up about Thanos-in-name-only (TINO)."

None of this remotely sounds like Thanos other than the idea of him being deformed. Aspects stated here even seem to contradict what we are told by Nebula and Gamora in prior movies, they even contradict Thanos's actions in prior films. Hopefully it is a cover-up to hide his true intentions, because this motivation is the motivation of parody movies and not remotely intelligent;

"Obviously he has a grand plan, like somebody who’s pulling in kids for their own selfish bloodshed. But he has a capacity to love very much and very deeply." - Feige

Thanos stole children, killing their families in-front of them. The 'Children Of Thanos' are the sole survivors from their entire race, races that Thanos wiped out in-front of them. He then forced them to fight each other multiple times every day for his amusement, the loser would have pieces ripped from them while they were still alive - maybe an arm, maybe an eye. Nebula and Proxima Midnight demonstrate this.

"You think of overpopulation and killing half the universe in order to save the other half and all this kind of stuff." - Feige

This is the dumbest thing i have ever read. It's the same plot as the parody villain in Kingsman; 'Kill a percentage of mankind who are causing issues due to overcrowding to prevent other issues such as global warming'

In Kingsman it sort of makes sense given how it is portrayed, Earth is not expanding into space, they dont have any more room - so it's somewhat justified that they would need to find a method to limit population.

In the MCU however they are trying to apply this to a universal scale, and it does not work. It makes no sense in the slightest when used in a universal perspective - a majority of the planets that we have seen in the MCU are uninhabited, dead worlds that are completely empty due to beings like Hive, Thanos, Wars or simply ancient beings wiping out entire planets with the Infinity Stones. The universe has never been shown as overcrowded in the slightest.

It also limits the threat of the villain - killing half the universe was not Thanos' end goal in the comics, yet here it sounds like his end goal is to ensure overpopulation does not occur by limiting universal population.

@HeavyMetal4Life -
It's almost as if perhaps they expected Thanos to have consistent character with how he is portrayed in the movies and stripping him of everything that made the character interesting damages the character...

"Just wait till the [frick]ing movie"
If these are accurate remarks then why wait for the movie to discuss them when they will be the same in the movie? Why are you discussing them then? Just wait till the movie ;) /s

All people are doing here is celebrating the bastardization of a character in the same way that people did for the Joker in Suicide Squad or Superman in Batman V Superman.

Nobody is going to like this change if it is accurate given it'll be so generic that Thanos will be unmemorable as a villain for anything other than visuals and being extremely powerful, especially after over 6 years of the casual movie-goers familiarizing themselves with the character - it's just a letdown.

@Scarilian - I've been following and reading Thanos for years and every single appearance he's been in. You? Well.. You can go [frick] yourself. This is spot on Thanos. Of course they've twisted his motivations by a bit, but philosophically this is Starlin Thanos is to a tee.
