Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters in a matter of weeks but is that enough time to get all caught up on a decade's worth of Marvel Studios movies? Regardless of whether you're going to have chance for that or just want to know where all your favourite heroes were when you last saw them, we have you covered with this MCU recap delving into both the past and present of Earth's Mightiest Heroes.
We also delve into characters like Thanos, the Guardians of the Galaxy, and The Collector, touching on how they'll factor into Avengers: Infinity War and what ties them to the various Infinity Stones.
So, to check out this list in full, all you need to do is click on either one of the buttons below (you know the drill by now). Once you're done, be sure to let us know which character you're most excited to see in the movie and how you think they'll factor into things in the comments section down below.
Captain America
Played By: Chris Evans
First Appearance: Captain America: The First Avenger
Last Seen: Captain America: Civil War
Steve Rogers is on the run from the government after breaking out his friends from The Raft and refusing to sign the Sokovia Accords and Spider-Man: Homecoming (which technically marked his last MCU appearance) made it clear that he's a fugitive now. While he may have sent Tony Stark a burner phone to reach him on, Steve no longer wields the shield and is something of a nomad as a result.
Iron Man
Played By: Robert Downey Jr.
First Appearance: Iron Man
Last Seen: Spider-Man: Homecoming
Tony Stark served as a mentor to Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Homecoming and didn't seem to be too phased by the events of Captain America: Civil War. However, the revelation that The Winter Soldier murdered his parents hit the hero hard and he's now in possession of Steve Rogers' shield. We know he's also been preparing for another alien invasion and is now engaged to Pepper Potts.
Black Widow
Played By: Scarlett Johansson
First Appearance: Iron Man 2
Last Seen: Captain America: Civil War
Natasha Romanoff never ended up being caged in The Raft alongside her fellow Avengers and was last seen being warned by Tony Stark that General Ross would be coming for her after she decided to help Captain America escape. What she's been up to since isn't clear but we do know that she's dyed her hair blonde and has somehow connected with Steve Rogers so they can still work together.
Thor
Played By: Chris Hemsworth
First Appearance: Thor
Last Seen: Thor: Ragnarok
The God of Thunder has been left with only one eye after clashing with Hela and while he was on his way to Earth at the end of his last solo outing, that journey was interrupted by Thanos' massive ship. Trailers for Avengers: Infinity War, however, have made it clear that the Mad Titan gives Thor and beating and that he's later found by the Guardians before going on a quest for a new weapon.
The Hulk
Played By: Mark Ruffalo
First Appearance: The Incredible Hulk/The Avengers
Last Seen: Thor: Ragnarok
The Hulk wound up on Sakaar following the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron and quickly became The Grandmaster's Champion. However, the Jade Giant didn't return to his Bruce Banner persona at all during that time and Bruce has now been left to worry that the next time he transforms could essentially be the end for him. When he arrives back on Earth, though, it will be as Bruce Banner.
Doctor Strange
Played By: Benedict Cumberbatch
First Seen: Doctor Strange
Last Seen: Thor: Ragnarok
The Sorcerer Supreme had a fun cameo appearance in Thor's hilarious solo outing last year but the fact he now wields the Time Stone is what we should really be talking about here. Thanos is going to be coming for that and seeing as The Hulk crash lands into the Sanctum Sanctorum (which has to be deliberate), we can safely assume that's how Strange ends up becoming an Avenger here!
Spider-Man
Played By: Tom Holland
First Seen: Captain America: Civil War
Last Seen: Spider-Man: Homecoming
At the end of his first solo outing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Peter Parker turned down the opportunity to become an Avenger and wear the Iron Spider suit so kindly developed by Tony Stark. However, he'll end up donning that when he joins the fight against Thanos and it's going to be very interesting seeing if this movie touches on the fact his Aunt May knows his secret identity now.
The Guardians Of The Galaxy
Played By: Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper
First Seen: Guardians Of The Galaxy
Last Seen: Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2
Despite losing Yondu, the Guardians of the Galaxy scored a major victory when they managed to defeat Ego the Living Planet but James Gunn has confirmed that a total of four years have passed for the team when Avengers: Infinity War rolls around. That has to mean we'll see some changes in their dynamic and it should be a lot of fun seeing this lot pair up with Earth's Mightiest Heroes.
Thanos
Played By: Josh Brolin
First Seen: The Avengers
Last Seen: Avengers: Age Of Ultron
Thanos hasn't been particularly proactive during his previous appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the writers of Avengers: Infinity War have admitted that they didn't really understand what was going on when he last showed up so don't expect that to be explored in this movie. However, his quest for the Infinity Stones is about to be taken to the next level in this movie!
The Vision And Scarlet Witch
Played By: Paul Bettany And Elizabeth Olsen
First Seen: Avengers: Age Of Ultron
Last Seen: Captain America: Civil War
The Vision was still based at the New Avengers Facility the last time we saw him and it sounds like he's remained #TeamIronMan ever since. However, the android is clearly going to hook up with the Scarlet Witch - who was broken out of The Raft by Steve Rogers - but their little romance won't last long thanks to the arrival of Thanos' Black Order when they take aim at the Infinity Stone on his head.
Loki
Played By: Tom Hiddleston
First Seen: Thor
Last Seen: Thor: Ragnarok
While Loki attempted to betray his brother Thor multiple times the last time we saw him, he finally seemed to embark on a heroic path when he returned to help save Asgard from Hela's wrath. However, he couldn't resist swiping the Tesseract from Odin's vault and it looks like he may be the one who contacted Thanos in order to make a deal with the Mad Titan when he hands over this Infinity Stone.
Hawkeye
Played By: Jeremy Renner
First Seen: Thor
Last Seen: Captain America: Civil War
"Where's Hawkeye?" has been a questions fans have been asking for months now but a recently released comic book tie-in for Avengers: Infinity War revealed that he decided to go back to his family after being broken out of The Raft and was planning on giving up his archer identity for a while. What we now need to find out is what brings the hero out of hiding and back into action!
Bucky
Played By: Sebastian Stan
First Seen: Captain America: The First Avenger
Last Seen: Black Panther
Black Panther's after-credits scene made it clear that the former Winter Soldier is now free of HYDRA's programming and the trailers for this movie show him rocking a brand new arm which is quite clearly enhanced by Vibranium. As a result, Bucky should be more formidable than ever before but will Iron Man be able to put his differences aside with the assassin assuming they cross paths here?
Black Panther
Played By: Chadwick Boseman
First Seen: Captain America: Civil War
Last Seen: Black Panther
At the end of his first solo outing, T'Challa made the decision to out Wakanda to the rest of the world and that's a plot threat which is clearly going to be carried over into Avengers: Infinity War due to the fact Earth's Mightiest Heroes decide to make their last stand against Thanos there. Not everyone in Wakanda is happy about that but Black Panther isn't going to let Thanos enact his plan without a fight.
Nebula
Played By: Karen Gillan
First Seen: Guardians Of The Galaxy
Last Seen: Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2
Forget Hawkeye, where's Nebula? Sure, she's popped up on magazine covers and the odd poster but we still have no real idea what she'll be getting up to here. However, the fact that she told Nebula she wanted to hunt their father down following that awkward embrace could tell us all we need to know and it will be interesting seeing how she fares gong after a Mad Titan with the Infinity Stones!
War Machine
Played By: Don Cheadle
First Seen: Iron Man/Iron Man 2
Last Seen: Captain America: Civil War
Poor War Machine ended up being gravely injured after a stray shot from The Vision cost him the use of his legs but Tony Stark has managed to come up with some cybernetic enhancements which mean that Rhodey will be able to walk and charge into action as War Machine in this movie. What's really interesting about that, though, is the fact he'll be joining Captain America's team in Wakanda!
Heimdall
Played By: Idris Elba
First Seen: Thor
Last Seen: Thor: Ragnarok
Heimdall was given a much larger role to play in Thor's threequel but will he meet his maker at the hands of Thanos? Regardless of whether or not he holds the Soul Stone (and I really think that would be a little too predictable at this stage), enough evidence has surfaced in recent weeks to support the theory that Asgard's former gatekeeper is among the Asgardians wiped out by the Mad Titan.
The Collector
Played By: Benicio Del Toro
First Seen: Guardians Of The Galaxy
Last Seen: Guardians Of The Galaxy
His workshop may have been decimated by the Guardians but as far as we know, The Collector still possesses the Power Stone which was left with him by Heimdall and Sif at the end of Thor: The Dark World. A leaked clip from Avengers: Infinity War revealed that Thanos will be going after him for that, so the signs are pointing to things ending badly for The Grandmaster's brother in this movie.
Valkyrie
Played By: Tessa Thompson
First Seen: Thor: Ragnarok
Last Seen: Thor: Ragnarok
It's pretty obvious that Thanos lays waste to Thor's ship in this movie but what does that mean for Valkyrie seeing as she was on board at the time of his attack? If Marvel kills her off here, the backlash will be huge so you have to hope that the Russos have come up with something good for the hero. Perhaps she can track down the M.I.A. Sif for a badass teamup? We'll just have to wait and see.
Groot
Played By: Vin Diesel
First Seen: Guardians Of The Galaxy
Last Seen: Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2
I know we've covered the Guardians but keep a close eye on Groot here as his role looks to be a big one. Sure, he's a moody teenager now but toys for the movie have pointed to him being the one who provides Thor with the handle for his new weapon, while set reports confirmed that the sentient tree will be part of the final battle in Wakanda alongside Rocket and the God of Thunder.
