Thanos' Plans In AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Finally Revealed
Avengers: Infinity War co-screenwriter Stephen McFeely has teased Thanos' end-goal in a Doctor Strange blu-ray extra. Is he courting Mistress Death or have his motivations been tweaked to suit the MCU?
The Doctor Strange blu-ray/DVD extras have leaked online and Screen Rant has posted an interesting tidbit from Avengers: Infinity War co-writer Stephen McFeely concerning the reason behind Thanos' machinations in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Per McFeely, “His goal is to re-balance the universe as he sees it. So when he figures out that the Infinity Stones could do this for him at the snap of a finger, that becomes his main goal.”
In the comics, Thanos is an Eternal who is obsessed with Mistress Death, the physical embodiment of the abstract idea of fatality and oblivion. In an attempt to win "her" affection, Thanos destroys half of the entire Marvel universe in 1991's The Infinity Gauntlet miniseries from Jim Starlin, Ron Lim and George Perez . However, it sounds as if that will be tweaked in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as this version of the Mad Titan will be seeking to "re-balance it." That in itself is a cryptic statement as it implies the universe is currently unbalanced or at least unbalanced in Thanos' eyes.
It's likely McFeely was purposely cryptic to avoid spoilers but absence of Mistress Death in his explanation could be telling. It also seems as if McFeely is insinuating that Thanos has only recently become aware of the Infinity Stones over the course of the last few years which would loosely line-up with the start of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. If that is indeed the case, how old is Thanos in the MCU and what was his plans for "re-balancing the universe" before he learned of the Infinity Stones?
While McFeely's statement was brief, there's lots to chew on here for longtime comic book readers. Let us know your thoughts and opinions in the comment section below.
