BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER Director Plays Coy When Asked About AVENGERS: SECRET WARS Rumors

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever director Ryan Coogler has been asked about rumours he'll helm Avengers: Secret Wars for Marvel Studios, but dodges a question about that and a possible Black Panther 3...

It's already been confirmed that Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Daniel Destin Cretton will helm Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, but there's still no word on Avengers: Secret Wars. What we do know, however, is that Loki and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness scribe Michael Waldron will pen the 2026 movie's screenplay.

We have to imagine Marvel Studios is already talking to directors, though it's feasible someone has already been hired. If the rumour mill is to be believed, that person is none other than Black Panther: Wakanda Forever director Ryan Coogler.

It's hard to imagine anyone finding fault with that decision, though the filmmaker played coy during a recent interview with Phase Zero. When it was pointed out to him that fans on the streets are keen to see him land the gig, Coogler responded: "Say what now? Man, what streets, bro? What’re you talking about, bro?!"

"Bro, I ain't heard nothing about that man. I’m trying to finish this one!"

Is the director protesting a little too much there? The question certainly seemed to catch him off guard, though he similarly shrugged off a question about Black Panther 3

"I got no answers for you," Coogler said when pushed on whether that's his next movie. "Yeah, no, I try to finish what I’m doing, and then think about what’s next." Clearly unwilling to give anything away, it seems only time will tell what his future in the MCU looks like.

Due to their commitments to AGBO, Joe and Anthony Russo won't return to MCU for Secret Wars despite it being a dream project for both directors. We've heard that Marvel Studios is looking to hire a filmmaker they've worked with before, though, and Coogler definitely has the right sort of vision to do a story as ambitious as this one the justice it deserves on screen.

Avengers: Secret Wars is set to be released in theaters on May 1, 2026.

Don't even know how the guy was able to power through Wakanda Forever. Secret Wars is the last thing I'd expect him to do.

From what little I have heard about Wakanda Forever, he has done a helluva job, and no doubt could bring some serious skills to the set of Secret Wars. But I'll be honest, I am hoping for the return of the Russo Brothers and their writing team to tackle that upcoming project. Doubt it will happen at this point, but something I would love to see.

@Mugens - We already have Michael Waldron writing the screenplay at the moment. Things could change but I don’t see them bringing back the Russos. If so, they would have brought them back for Kang Dynasty.

I honestly would like a fresh take on an Avengers film rather than being safe.

@LiteralSense - Yeah I know about Waldron, but still would have liked to see the Russo Brothers and their team return. Not so much playing it safe, just a proven quantity that I liked.

I can see Coogler land the job, but just as well I can see Reed or Watts land the job. Either way, it's gonna be a director MS has worked with before

Like Nolan. Good man.

I feel like it's his gig to refuse.

At this stage i don't see them bringing in a directors who's not been involved in their stuff already, unless he was hired from the start of the phase, like they did with Whedon.

He'll have time to get it done too, as it's still 2 phases away at this point.

Wakanda Forever is looking like the best of the bunch aswell.

Coogler has so far a pretty clear track record of making movies that deal with the struggles of people of color. Not saying that Secret Wars is not going to be "about something" under all the action and spectacle, but it might be some subject matter than isn't as personally importan for him.

I'm wondering who would be the villain for BP3? Shadow King? Acchebe? Tetu?

I think Shadow King would be a great way to introduce Storm into the MCU.
