Chris Hemsworth Discusses Thor's New Look In MARVEL'S THE AVENGERS

The actor reveals why exactly Thor ditches his sleeves and cape for parts of Marvel's The Avengers, and also goes into detail about how the God of Thunder has progressed since his solo movie as well as much more.

In a recent interview with SciFi Now Magazine, Australian actor Chris Hemsworth has talked in detail both about the progression of his character between the events of THOR and Marvel's The Avengers as well as the decision to give the character a new look of sorts. Be sure to pick up the latest issue of the magazine for even more of his thoughts on both Joss Whedon's superhero ensemble and Snow White and the Huntsman.

"I think they did a great job of toning it back a little with the outfits so there was a little bit of a common thread between them. Individually, in their own films they're probably a little flashier. In The Avengers, I removed my cape for some of the scenes, and that was more Thor's casual number. Captain America had his sleeves rolled up. Just something that broke the formality of it all, and I think it works for that reason because of those slight adjustments. Everyone was scared of that, of how it was going to look, but then among the action scenes where everything is so hot and full on, it's like now you want the colours; now you want everyone to be in their full glory. And then the stuff just kind of launches off the screen. It's wicked.

"With this film it was a little more difficult to track an individual journey so much. You still do, but you have to work harder because it's not as obvious. You're much more a part of the flow of the group. For me, I guess Thor, in a different way from everyone else, was much more emotionally invested in the villain, and the problem that the villain brings because it was his brother. That's his sort of difference, and it's a much more personal conflict. For the rest of them it was more like they had a job to do.

"At the end of Thor he's matured somewhat. He's been humbled and he's earned his powers now, but then what do you do? Put it into action. It's one thing to say you've learned a lesson, but now it's like, "Show us that you're not still a cocky petualant kid!" He's tested with that, his ego is put to the test. All of theirs are. Everything I'm hearing...I'll get in trouble for aying anything else, but the truth is that everything I've heard is that it's going to be [frick]ing awesome. Someone said the other day, "Do you feel weird or at a Halloween party dressing up in that outift?" I said, "When you're on set and everyone else is wearing those outfits, for the first time you feel like you finally fit in." For the first time it's like, "I don't feel out of place with this cape and this big hammer, because that guy's wearing an iron suit, that guy's wrapped up in an American flag and that guy turns green." That was a trip."

A big guy can get away with that hair any day, without looking too feminine. :)

Actually, I think the hair looks more like the comics in that picture. Also, I believe that it is his own hair, and not the wig he had in Thor 1. That was obvious in the interview at the BAFTA awards, found a clip:

Anyways, this movie will be awesome.

okay everyone
do not
I REPEAT
DO NOT JUDGE THIS OR ANYMORE MOVIES BY HOW MUCH MONEY THEY COST OR MAKE
JUDGE THEM BY HOW THEY AFFECT YOU ON THE BIG SCREEN

BUDGETS AND RETURNS ARE NOT IMPORTANT.

How does Chris look like a girl? 6 foot 3, built like a tank and he looks like a girl? What world are you living in?

Also nice to see Josh@ ditching the yellow blockquotes for this article. Looks much less intense without the blockquotes.

This movie plus all mechandising will make much much more than $600 million.

@TheTrojan

Gross is important if you want to see a sequel. Plus that's how summer movies are judged, by the amount of people who felt compelled enough to hand over their hard earned money to see them in the theaters. Does that mean every blockbuster is great? No. But with the summer movies they are judged by their total gross, it's how it has always been, and how it always will be. That is why you always here phrases like "despite the reviews (insert summer blockbuster) took in 80 million dollars at the box office this weekend.

Hollywood is a business, and the only thing the studio's care about during the summer time is money. Those are when their "tentpole" films are released. During the late fall and early winter that is when you generally seem them care less about gross and more about Oscar Buzz.

The studio knew John Carter wouldn't be able to hang in the Summer with all the blockbusters that are coming out so they took a chance and released it early. They took a gamble and found out nobody cared about that franchise.

Good to hear they're trying to maintain the continuity from from the solo film. I wondered if his maturity and lessons would show in this film, or just revert right back to cocky, hot-head THOR as if his movie never happened. Throw a little Jane Foster closure in there and we have a film.

Also, if his cape materializes like his armor I may get excited. It would be incredible if it transformed and poured from the cloth on his shoulders.

Look, I'm glad you're enjoying film school and all, but you act as if you're the only one who's considered this concept. I have a strong mind that does not need to be spoon fed. I also don't need some dilettante film critic talking down to me about something I'm already well aware of. May I suggest you take your talents to www.idontknowhowtowatchorenjoymovieswithoutcondescendingadvice.com.

I'm just saying...It's funny how Marvel fans put down GL and it's custom but when Thor changes a few things on his, no harm done, no crime committed. Thor is suppose to have a helmet and cape with sleeves. If he's not rocking that at least majority of the film then if I was a fan I would bitch. If you are going to do a film like this, do it right.
loki668
loki668 - 3/25/2012, 9:55 AM
@blueorangeny

Actually, Thor has "rocked" a number of looks in the comics. Most of them were sleeveless. The helmet may just be ceremonial for the cinematic Thor. And Green Lantern was bashed by Marvel AND DC fans. Not because of it's "custom" (whatever that is), but because it was a horrible film. GL is one of my favorite characters and that film was an insult to the character, the company of DC, and the genre of cbms.

I apologize. I just realized you were saying "costume". It wasn't bad, compared to Daredevil, but it could have been much, much better. Of all of the reasons to hate the GL film, the costume was small potatoes.

It's not what he said but his assumption that HE was somehow the only person who managed to consider this. His last couple of comments were about the death of cinema. Nothing wrong with that opinion. Just don't shove it down our throats like we don't know how or why to enjoy films. It's condescending and presumptuous.
