With Marvel's The Avengers sequel set for 2015, there is still an enormous amount of things which could happen to the production of the anticipated sequel. Joss Whedon is reportedly directing the film and overseeing the MCU franchise but what direction will they decide is best for the ultimate crossover film?

The Avengers and Guardians Of The Galaxy Vs. Thanos Theory

A popular idea has the Mad Titan steal the Infinity Gauntlet from Asgard thus making the Avengers and possibly the Guardians of the Galaxy team up to take the gauntlet wielder down. Myself and many others think this would be rushing a complex storyline and not give it the grander and build up it needs. Not only would the Avengers, even with the Guardians of the Galaxy be ridiculously out matched but it would be very confusing with the Guardians appearing in an Avengers movie. I mean isn't an Avengers movie supposed to be about the AVENGERS?

The Avengers Vs. Thanos Theory

Another popular theory before the Avengers film, was the Avengers battling Thanos alone with the Gauntlet. Not only is this illogical because they wouldn't have a possible chance of defeating him, but hardly any of the main characters in the original storyline would be included. People like Adam Warlock most notably would have to be included into an adaption of The Infinity Gauntlet. Even the theory above is much more logical!

Thanos Without The Infinity Gauntlet Theory

The third theory is Thanos doesn't have the Infinity Gauntlet and leads an army to defeat Earth to get some Infinity Gems left on Earth. Besides that it would almost be a rehash of the first movie, this idea is better than the first two. Thanos would be a match for the Avengers, yet not too powerful for them alone to foil his plans. The main problem is we have already seen it and as Joss Whedon said if he was doing Avengers 2, it would be smaller and more personal for the characters. This story would be the exact opposite.

No Thanos Theory

Some believe Thanos won't be involved in Avengers 2 at all and the cameo in Marvel's The Avengers was just to tease him for the Guardians Of The Galaxy film. I doubt this. I believe Thanos is going to play a big part in the MCU, even touching the Avengers story. At the least he should have a cameo in the Marvel's The Avengers sequel.

Thanos Behind The Scenes Theory

I believe this is the most logical theory. Thanos could be pulling the strings for such a group of villains as a version of The Masters of Evil. The solo films could easily be building up to this as well. Mandarin is reportedly the villain in Iron Man 3, just as the Enchantress and the Executioner could easily be involved in Thor: The Dark World, even Baron Zemo could easily be involved in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. While Ant-Man's release date is behind Marvel's The Avengers sequel, the film could easily be moved before to take advantage of the rumored villain Radioactive Man. Marvel has already played around with their dates of films as Thor was to be released in 2010 with Iron Man 2 and Captain America: The First Avenger was to be released with Marvel's The Avengers in 2011. This theory would support Joss Whedon's statement that the currently untitled sequel to Marvel's The Avengers, would be a much smaller and more personal, as it would use villains with personal grudges against the heroes.

What do you think? Do you agree with one of the theories above? Or do you have your own opinion? Be sure to state your thoughts in the comments and vote on the poll below.

I think that the last one is a great theory

It sounds as if they are about to do something unprecendented; fvck it all up.
When CBMs and CBM creators fall, they fall hard and they fall fast. Look at Singer and Fox.
It all starts when they feel infallible. When they feel that no matter what they do they can do no wrong and the fans will still sing their praises. How wrong they can be.
Avengers is the most successful cbm ever and it is with that kind of success and victory that usually leads down a dark road. I really do hope I'm wrong, but what I'm hearing is not good.
First there is the Cap sequel. Winter Soldier? Really? So soon? Kind of takes the drama and the build up out of it. Just because it has been the most popular Cap comic in years doesn'yt mean they should dive right in like a schoolboy with a ho. There're plenty of good Cap comics from the Silver Age that are begging to be adapted. I mean what's Cap 3? The Death of Captain America?
Now they are saying that they are going to "update" the backstories of the Guardians of the Galaxy? Which I think we can assume means that they are erasing the Thanos element. Which is a sorely bad move.
So, I don't think they will be going with an Avengers/ Guardians team-up in Avengers 2. I think they'll be keeping those franchises seperate.
I think that Joss put Thanos into the end of The Avengers because it was so cool that he could do that and as a behind-the-scenes villian, he works. But nowm, I'm getting the feeling that he feels he's shot himself in the foot and he's going to have to make Thanos an easier pill to swallow for the non-comics-reading crowd. He has to make him more of a plausable movie villian. Which I think means he's going to have to sodomize everything about the character and his backstory, the Infinity Gauntet, his impressing Death, his powers, his family and his relationship to all other cosmic character... Everything. A complete bastardization of the character. Which is a big fat shame. But mark my words. That is the way the future is written so far. I hope this doesn't happen.

And yes, that last one is awesome. To keep Thanos as the big bad and have all other main villians be connected to him in some way until they make a big final movie where they have to go u against Thanos would be brilliant. It'd give it a fun '80s cartoon kind of vibe. I'd love it.

I'm more hoping Whedon sticks to the idea of keeping Avengers 2 smaller and more personal and saving the big bang blow out for 3 with Thanos and an all out team up battle with The Avengers and whatever heroes/teams are introduced along the way.

I don't want Thanos to be the main villain in Avengers 2. Avengers 3 should be an all out war on Thanos to close the trilogy and the era.

I think you let the GotG take on Thanos. In Avengers 2, I'd like to see Kang. For Avengers 3, maybe an intro Act (like in a lot of Bond movies) with the Masters of Evil, and then Ultron.

I agree with @DeadPunisher Ultron should have been in the Avengers 2 but seeing as how Ant-Man is dated 4 after Avengers 2 idk. Thanos is 2 much of a threat 2 be in the 2nd film.So I'll go with the pulling the strings option.

I honestly don't want to see Thanos in Avengers 2. Save him for part 3 and have him show up in Guardians of the Galaxy first. I want to see Ultron or the Masters of Evil (would have to change that name, evil people don't think of themselves as evil) instead, and a more Earth based story.
