Iron Man Will Not Appear Again Until The Avengers

So says director Jon Favreau.

Jon Favreau went on the LA radio show of KROQ's Kevin and Bean just after opening weekend for Iron Man 2. He shared some interesting stuff on Iron Man, The Avengers and his next comic book feature, Cowboys & Aliens. Many have wondered if Robert Downey Jr. would make some kind of appearance in the next two Marvel movies, Thor and The First Avenger: Captain America. This was fueled even more when he visited the Thor set earlier this year. Well, it looks like one thing is for sure, any Marvel Easter eggs will not include shellhead.

"He's not in 'Thor', he's not in Cap which are the two movies for next Summer. It'll be very interesting to see how the Marvel Universe branches off. All of these movies are going to be taken into account for 'The Avengers' in two years."

On the difficulty of getting started on Iron Man 2:

"Well, first you know we had to get the band back together. That was the whole thing that took a lot of months to work all that out. That was an uncomfortable period because we were chomping at the bits to get started, uh, but once we pulled it together, we were just having so much fun coming up with all the different ideas of what we could do, that we had hoped that the fans would like and the audiences would receive it. But we didn’t know, but we definitely were pleasing ourselves every step of the way."

The bigger box office take with 3D was brought up and if that had ever been discussed for the movie. Favreau felt it would have forced him to rush the movie but the only way he would be interested in 3D is shooting in 3D:

"Oh yeah, I have been testing the gear out because we are discussing whether or not we want to do it on the next film. I know Marvel is looking into it on their movie. but for me personally for 'Cowboys and Aliens' we are looking at what the gear can hold up to because we are shooting out in the desert, which has never been done before with this type of gear. But I love watching movies that are done well in 3D; I think it is very captivating."

He also touched based on the comic book genre as whole and the differences between his last movie and his next one:

"I think there is definitely an appetite for comics although I wouldn’t put it in the same category as 'Iron Man', because 'Iron Man' is something where the comic book is where people know it from. 'Cowboys and Aliens' was something that the comic book was written after the script I believe. So it’s not the same type of property. But I think graphic novels are really a cool way to find new properties because they are so visual and it doesn’t take a lot of imagination to see the potential in those stories."

Now, most of us on this site know this already but I think it bears repeating to hear it from one of The Avengers executive producers, Jon Favreau, himself especially since he reiterates that Tony Stark will not be seen again until 2012:

"I'm not sure where The Avengers goes. There is no shooting draft written yet. It's gonna be a big undertaking for Marvel to actually incorporate what happened in 'Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Thor, Captain America, The Hulk. All that hs to inform one unified vision in The Avengers. It's a very exciting prospect. And certainly, Tony Stark is not going to be involved in any of the movies until that one."

The full audio interview is right here for your listening pleasure. He also talks about choosing Robert Downey Jr. for the role and his thoughts on box office numbers amongst other things. On a side note, I used to listen to Kevin & Bean all the time when I lived in the LA area-very funny guys who have been around for quite some time.

I can't wait to see what easter eggs they put in the Avengers movie.

RDJ is not going to give Marvel any more 'freebies' after Iron Man 1 did so well and he basically appeared for free in a cameo in The Incredible Hulk. I can't say I blame him for wanting to elevate himself above free cameos, basically helping to sell another movie based upon his star power but, on the other hand, Stan Lee does it!

And not to mention it's really cool for the fans!

he doesn't really need to be in them, he's done his part.

At the end of Captain America or Thor (i forget which one comes out last) Iron Man, Cap, and Thor should walk into a room where Bruce Banner (Edward Norton) is being held and drop The Avengers folder on the desk. I think that would make every fanboy/girl's jaw drop and would be a great after credits cameo for RDJ and the two Chris's to do to lead into The Avengers.

So does that mean RDJ could possibly make an apperance as just Tony Stark or not at all???

I mean, it wasn't COMPLETELY clarified right???

@ Redhood: good point. Wasn't there an article a while ago where RDJ appeared with his 'Tony Stark' goatee AFTER filming for Iron Man had wrapped and around the same time as his 'visit' to the Thor set?

@Redhood-I think he clarified it pretty well. Take a look at the last quote again referencing Avengers:

"Tony Stark is not going to be involved in any of the movies until that one"

Great find DOGS! :)

I'm ok with Iron Man not turning up in Thor or The First Avenger to be honest as they need to work hard to set themselves up as their own franchises without relying on an Iron Man cameo to get the audiences attention! However, I do still hope that if Cap's movie does have modern bookends that Tony is perhaps there when he's discovered!

@ california

lol. RDJ's appearance in Incredible Hulk wasn't a "freebie". that counts as one of his 9 movies. if anything, RDJ came out ahead with that.

Marvel signed these guys to 9 picture deals because they knew they would be making small appearances here and there.

This is a good thing. We need to have him go away for awhile. It'll just make his appearance in Avengers that much more exciting. It's like being drunk every day. You gotta be sober sometimes to appreciate being wasted. :)

@tea-Brotha, you always brighten my day with your silliness! :)

BIGBMH
BIGBMH - 5/28/2010, 7:08 AM
I'm good with Tony not being in Thor or Cap. We all know it's the same universe. We don't need to see every character just to say "Hey! There's Tony!" There's kind of a linking web between the movies. Tony Stark connects the Iron Man movies to The Incredible Hulk. Nick Fury connects the Iron Man movies to Captain America. Agent Coulson connect the Iron Man movies to Thor. I think there are enough connections to last us until Avengers.

Shazam171: Cool poster! Thanks for sharing that!

Teabag: Don't know where you find this stuff, or if you make it up yourself, but that's just the kind of good laugh I need to start the work day! Love the conversations with Jarvis especially.

There is no real need for Stark or Iron Man to appear in Thor or Captain America. Let them tell their own stories, and find their own ways to tie in to the upcoming Avengers movie. We'll see Tony again soon enough, when The Avengers comes out. That's not to say it wouldn't be cool to see him make a brief cameo, but it's not necessary.

@ Corndog: RDJ's deal was a 3-picture deal. The Incredible Hulk cameo was a freebie. He said as much during interviews back in 2008.
