The Hollywood Reporter reveals that
Marvel's The Avengers will today gross $800 million worldwide, making that $1 billion by Sunday prediction a guarantee...well, depending on how
Dark Shadows ends up performing at the box office that is. The Tim Burton helmed film is its only real competition this weekend, although the mostly negative reviews are sure to have an impact as they did with the box office performances of
Green Lantern and
John Carter (tracking currently has a domestic opening of $35 million to $40 million). Yesterday saw the Joss Whedon helmed superhero ensemble cross $775.4 million, and no other film besides James Cameron's
Avatar has managed to reach $1 billion this quickly, although
The Avengers will need to do so by Sunday in order to achieve the same record. Do you think it will manage to hit that number by then? Sound off with your thoughts in the usual place. It is however worth noting that some analysts are being far more conservative in their estimates, although the mention of "at least" $950 million is still a very positive sign.
