If a scoop from a Marvel blog The Daily Marvelite is to be believed, the highly anticipated follow-up to next year's Avengers: Age of Ultron could be split into two parts. According to their source close to Marvel Studios, the battle against Thanos will require more than one movie to be given its proper weight.
As the author of the scoop notes in the article, the splitting of the sequel falls in line with Marvel Studios' recent release date announcements that included May 4, 2018 and May 3, 2019 as potential releases. These early May dates are typically reserved for Avengers movies, going by the trend of the first two Avengers films, it seems likely that an Avengers film will fall on each date. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige also recently hinted that the third Avengers movie would continue the 3 year gap between sequels, making that May 2018 date very likely to be the first part of The Avengers 3. Further evidence from none other than Groot himself, Vin Diesel, previously hinted that he learned about a "merging of brands" during his talks with Marvel in landing the Groot voiceover job. This would work well into Marvel's plans to join the two teams together for a final showdown with the Mad Titan, and could allow for even more characters to join in with the time in between parts 1 and 2. Given the recent trend in Hollywood for splitting final installments into two parts (Harry Potter, Hunger Games, etc.), this seems like a no-brainer decision to rake in even more box office from their billion-plus dollar franchise.
