George Clooney On Batman And Robin "It Was A Difficult Film To Be Good In”

George Clooney recently talked a little bit about why he was drawn to the now infamously disastrous Batman film Batman And Robin saying that in a weird way its still his biggest break.

While speaking with Total Film about his new movie The Ides Of March, George Clooney answered some questions about the failure that was Batman and Robin. Clooney stated that its easy to say that it was a shit movie and even says that he was really bad in it. He did say, however, that he feel Batman is still the biggest break he ever had and that it completely changed his career.

Said Clooney:

"It was a difficult film to be good in. With hindsight it’s easy to look back at this and go ‘Woah, that was really shit and I was really bad in it.’"

“The truth is, my phone rang, and the head of Warner Bros said ‘Come into my office, you are going to play Batman in a Batman film’ and I said ‘Yeah!’ I called my friends and they screamed and I screamed and we couldn’t believe it! I just thought the last one had been successful so I thought I was just going to be in a big successful franchise movie."

“In a weird way I was. Batman is still the biggest break I ever had and it completely changed my career, even if it was weak and I was weak in it. It was a difficult film to be good in. I don’t know what I could have done differently.

“But if I am going to be Batman in the film Batman & Robin, I can’t say it didn’t work and then not take some of the blame for that."

Batman and Robin has long been regarded as one of the worst comic book movies of all time. Do you guys think its was Clooney's fault? Or would you place most the blame on Joel Schumacher? As usual sound off your thoughts in the comment boxes below.

I hate George Clooney, but he does look A LOT like the comic. His jawline at least is very 'Batman-esque'

He was the best Bruce Wayne ever, even beating Conroy. But goddamn his Batman...

you can blame whatever you want, or blame the director, actors etc.. I just blame the the writers. Clooney wasn't terrible the writing was. Remember that joel directed THE LOST BOYS, so don't cut the man down he knows how to make a good movie. I just think he made that BATMAN movie a bit gay.

Clooney was never to blame for that travesty. He showed up to do his job like any other actor would have. Blame Schumacher and the screen writers. Batman & Robin looked like a bad Six Flags theme park attraction.

And I agree with a few others. Clooney was a very convincing looking Bruce Wayne. It's just sad he didn't have much to work with.

Any actor would have sucked in that film. Joel Schumacher is to blame

Toi this day, I think Clooney could have been a good Batman with a decent script and direction.

I was actually about 10 sentences into defending this movie when I actually realized just how horrible that movie was! HAHA. I loved it as a kid, and when you really watch it you have to realize that this movie was aimed at kids from the beginning; not for fan boys that are aware of the rich history, it was just meant for kiddy entertainment. That has to be it!
First Class IMHO is the worst in CBM history. My reasoning is that it was aimed at the CBM crowd. It didn't have a "childish" tone to it like Batman and still managed to take a giant crap on the X-Men mythos.

I'd rather not be reminded that B&R exists.

Thank you.

movies are ( for the most part ) NEVER made by just one person.
However , Schumacher bears the most responsibility for the mess that was Batman and Robin ( i.m.o. ).

Clooney is Clooney. I just hope Hardy does as good a job as Bane in BnR. So spot on.

@BARONBLOOD - yeah man, but the thing here is that there wasn't a case of just small mistakes or small low points in the script.

THE WHOLE SCRIPT CONCEPT WAS SHITTY!

And Schumacher agreed with it. If he wanted to do a serious Batman movie he would've refused the script (and he didn't, since batman forever was his previous evil child).

He didn't pay ANY respect to the character. I remember his interviews at the time, when he said that "Batman has the best women and the best toys in town".

His (and the whole team, including the writers) objective was to deliver a 60's series "tribute" above all. This can be seen even on the excessive angled camera he uses.

I call Schumacher's fault all over because he had the power to change the shitty thing it was. And he knows it. He even apologized:

When you're director puts Nipples on your Bat costume, you know you're movies done... Joel Schumacher single handily ended Batman in the 20th century, fact
