For many fans of Gotham City's legendary Caped Crusader, the '90s Batman: The Animated Series remains the quintessential depiction of the Dark Knight, and spin-off feature Mask of the Phantasm is still widely considered the best Batman movie.

Now, we have word (via Toonado.com) that the acclaimed DC animated adventure is being re-released on 4K Blu-ray for the first time ever on September 12 to mark its 30th anniversary.

To coincide with the announcement, some new cover artwork has also been unveiled, giving us a look at the Caped Crusader (voiced by the late Kevin Conroy) along with Mark Hammill's Joker, Andrea Beaumont (Dana Delaney), and the mysterious Phantasm (it's hardly a spoiler to note that they're actually one and the same at this stage).

Check out the cover below (there's a list of bonus features on the back), and let us know if you plan on picking up Batman: Mask of the Phantasm on 4K Blu-ray this Fall.

"In this animated feature set in the 1940s, the troubled yet heroic Batman (Kevin Conroy) is pitted against a mysterious figure who is rubbing out Gotham City's most dangerous criminals, and who many believe is the caped crusader himself. Batman's alter ego, millionaire Bruce Wayne, is about to get married to the lovely Andrea Beaumont (Dana Delany), who helps him recover from his need to avenge his parents' murder -- meaning that his crime-fighting days may be numbered."

I still remember seeing this in the theaters as a kid. This movie is top tier Batman.

@Oberlin4Prez - yup. When people ask me "what more can you want" when I complain about Hollywood, this is it.

It's still ridiculous this was dismissed in theaters because batman forever was out at the same time. Biggest tragedy of film right there.

@Origame - the fact this story hasn’t been attempted to be adapted in live action is kind of amazing, but also I would be hesitant for just anyone to do it. Nolan could have probably pulled it off. The problem is, once you know who the phantasm is, it’s like how is there any mystery left.

@Oberlin4Prez - I think it's the fact she is a woman that ruins it for live action. In animation, you can more easily mess with the proportions to hide it, but in live action it's either gonna look obvious or you cheated by using a guy for most of the film. Just look at taskmaster in black widow.

@Oberlin4Prez - I had the same experience, but I have not watched it since. In my memory it is the best Batman movie I have seen, but I am not sure if I am just remembering with rose colored glasses. Would like to watch it again. Side note, do people still buy Bluray discs?

@Origame - To be honest, I sort of felt that same way watching it as a kid. But it was such a good movie it didnt matter. I just felt bamboozled.

@Ha1frican

Not sure they have. The 4K doesn't release until September 12th.

@regularmovieguy - If you go on Apple TV and search it shows the resolution under the description. It’s showing 4K for me rn although that might be the HBO Max version it doesn’t specify which app it is. The iTunes version shows as HD but has the updated cover art so it’ll probably get updated at or shortly after release

@Ha1frican

I own MOTP on Apple TV and it's still showing HD for me. The cover art has updated but I'm not sure the resolution has (yet). Let me know if you find out more.

@regularmovieguy - Then yeah it seems the HBO Max version is updated. The Apple TV app aggregates basically every streaming app aside from Netflix and so if you have those apps connected (which I do with Hulu, Disney+, Max and a prime Video) it displays the quality as the highest among them. If it’s on Max already though I bet the oreowned versions will be updated eventually as Apple honors your original purchase with a free upgrade when the paid version goes live as long as it has the same title. The only time this didn’t happen for me was I had a digital copy of “John Carpenters Halloween” that didn’t get upgraded bc the sku they made 4K was just “Halloween” so I had to buy it again

Has there really been no article about the Spider-Man 2 trailer yet or is it just eluding me?

There might be readers that have not watched it yet.

this brings to mind the dumbest logic when someone says, oh it's been so and so+ years *enter spoiler* about dexter or ESB or seven... like there can still be new generations that should be allowed to experience it as if it came out yesterday... dumb logic

I was six years old and remember VIVIDLY when BTAS played Sunday night at 8pm on Fox.

I remember seeing this in theaters. Masterpiece.

But is this the first time they’ve ever acknowledged that the show was meant to be set in the 1940’s? That one is new to me…
Nightwing1015
Nightwing1015 - 7/21/2023, 11:13 PM
@kg8817 - It's not set then, it's set in the 90s.

They've made this mistake specifically with Phantasm before though. There was a press release when the film came out saying it was set in the 1930s. But in the show we see the date it takes place as being the 90s.

Cool cover, the movie was good but it's been a long time since I saw it.

I do remember how Phantasm was loosely based from this other deep-dive villain from the Year 2 story, Reaper. I liked the story.
