Earlier this week, rumors of a Batman Beyond animated feature film being in development for a theatrical release began to circulate across the internet. The rumor was substantiated by some mysterious, leaked concept art for a Batman-related animated project featuring the WAG logo.

It looked pretty legitimate, but as it turns out, the rumor is apparently false. The Wrap's Umberto Gonzalez reported on Twitter that there is no Batman Beyond film in development. According to the self-proclaimed "Ace Scooper," Warner Animation Group features, DC Films, and Warner Bros. Animation TV have all denied work on the project.

"Not true. We are not working on an animated Batman Beyond movie," was the exact quote he shared on Twitter.

Gonzalez posted a follow-up tweet to those skeptical of his initial report. Addressing those still clinging to the rumors, believing the studios are lying, Gonzalez wrote:

While we were skeptical of the rumor to begin with, the notion of an animated Batman Beyond film doesn't seem like the worst idea, especially given the popularity of the character and the success of Sony Animation's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. On a somewhat related note, Warner Bros. did set a date this week for the release of Matt Reeves' The Batman.

I'm genuinely disappointed by DC's lack of initiative in adapting Batman Beyond. Such a great property that mostly collects dust on a shelf.

@Dart - It's like they're allergic to Batman Beyond and The Question

No rush for Batman Beyond.

Michael Keaton still isn’t old enough.

@IronGenesis - Michael Keaton still not old enough? What age Clint Eastwood are you hoping for? Unforgiven, Grand Torino or The Mule? Keaton is pretty damn close to Unforgiven age now.

@IronGenesis - It's animated, Keaton could be 50 and it wouldn't matter.

Seriously? The one thing DC had me hyped for, isn't a real thing.

I mean as much as people loved Spider-verse you could see why studios wouldn’t be necessarily rushing towards following it’s lead:

Spider-man: Homecoming - 880 million dollars worldwide
Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse - 340 million dollars worldwide

And it’s not like Spider-verse was a cheap movie to make.

Of course though if any studio saw Spider-verse and wanted to make something akin to that we’d still many years away from that becoming a reality and there probably wouldn’t be a lot of a announcements or leaks yet anyway.

@TheUnworthyThor - comparing spiderman spiderverse to spiderman homecoming a movie right after captain America avengers2.5 is not a fair assessment to begin with. Spiderverse was a complete success financially and critically. It’s not the incredibles type of success but with a 90 million budget and 360million + box office I’m sure Sony was very happy with spiderverse and a sequel will likely be on the way. As for Batman beyond if they do consider it in the future they should not go over a 50 million dollar budget and it will do fine.

@whynot - I didn’t say it was a flop. But anyone can see that Sony made a live action Venom movie for a 100 million dollars that was absolutely hated by critics and it made 855 million dollars. And then they made an animated Spider-man movie for 90 million dollars that was absolutely adored by critics and winning awards and it only made 340 million dollars (with a little more to eke out).

So I mean yeah you can make some money maybe but if you are deciding where to put your time, money, resources and calendar slots are you looking there or are you looking at the amounts of money Aquaman and Venom are making.

@whynot - I disagree. Homecoming made the money it made because it's Spider-Man (AKA the most popular superhero brand in the world). The Amazing Spider-Man movies weren't great yet they made a lot of money (especially the sequel) because Spider-Man is THAT popular.

Spider-Verse may not have performed the way some of us expected for other reasons (protagonist is not Parker and it's an animated film that debuted in a competitive month), but it could have done better.

@DnA - my point wasn’t to lessen the spiderman name popularity box office wise. My point was that this was the highest WW boxoffice spiderman movie in a competitive summer after the critical bomb that was amazing spiderman 2. If Homecoming wasn’t after Civil war and highly marketed with Ironman then it would not have done as well at the boxoffice. This is coming from a guy who has seen eclvery spidey movie opening day.

If we are wanting to talk about live action though there are approximately 62 different DC properties I’d like to see get a live action movie first.
