Christopher Nolan Confirms That The Dark Knight Rises Will Be "The Last Chapter"!

The director discusses his excitement about returning to the Batman universe, working on the movie with no studio inteference and confirms that it's the last chapter of his saga...

Christian Bale recently revealed that he’s approaching his third Batman movie, The Dark Knight Rises, as if it will be his last time playing the caped crusader on the big screen — and the film’s director, Christopher Nolan, is taking the same view as you can see below.

"I feel very glad that I’m doing another Batman film. I think it would have been daunting to sit down and write an original script after Inception. I love working within the realm and rules of our Batman world. It’s kind of nice to have someplace to go that I’m super-excited about."

I must say that I’m glad — I’m very, very glad — to be embarking on the last chapter of our Batman saga without any sense of obligation or duty to the studio. They did very well with Inception. So I’m able to go into finishing our story in a very enthusiastic way."

The Dark Knight Rises is set to be released on July 20, 2012!

Still Nolans isn't as big as BATMAN...

BATMAN will be gr8 whoever takes it up next!

Well if Nolan is excited to do the movie that is good news it says he is not just looking at the movies as just a paycheck which is the mindset many filmmakers seem to have with this genre.

As for it being his last movie I think this has been assumed by many for some time some people are already wanting to see the movies rebooted as soon as the movie is out in theaters most likely to tie into some unified DC Movieverse that does not and probably will not exist but I think there should be time before another reboot happens right away.

Well said ANIL! :) And hell yeah, that's a stunning cover and one I've been hoping to use for a Batman article since I first saw it. The one below was what I picked up when I bought the actual issue though because it's even more awesome to look at IMO. And yeah, after the disappointing/extremely confusing way that Morrison brought his arcs on "The Return of Bruce Wayne" and "Batman and Robin", "Batman Inc" was a real breath of fresh air and a great read.

Christopher Nolan leaving isn't as much of a loss as the loss of Christian Bale because you can keep a franchise going with different directors but not so much with different actors.

lets hope it is good.

its bound to be rebooted again in a couple of years with the telling of the origin & using the same old villains that we've seen a thousand times before.

Really doubt Bale will do another Batman movie. He is the kind of guy to do a part and move on.

I just hope the Batman movie that follows III is set in the DCU. As great as the Nolan films are I want to see the true Batman someday. Been a while since Burton's version.

Burton's Batman was different from the comics one too.

i'll wait until i see how the avengers turns out before i got wishing for DCU movies. I've always thought it'd be too difficult to do a group superhero movie. everybody has their favorite character and i think its impossible to give each enough screen time to please everybody.

dont get me wrong, i hope i'm wrong, if somebody can pull it off, i think it'd be epic, just don't see it happening.
Superman8
Superman8 - 11/30/2010, 2:43 PM
even comic book writers say its difficult to do group stories because its hard to find a threat big enough to require all of them at the same time. with hero movies trying to stay on the semi-believable road these days, i think its too hard to create villains or threats that would require the whole team and still stay on that road.

As long as Nolan treats the character with respect. Other filmmakers will use Batman and the rogues after Nolan.

Same thing goes for any director or writer put on Superman. I don't want to see some butchered wannabe Elseworld story on the big screen.

@ASuperman8 It's already been done 3 times. X-men 1-3 were very successful. What will be different is taking characters folks already know of and putting them together is a movie. Fan reception will not decide if superhero team movies work, the box office will. As long as Avengers makes money expect to see it happen more often.

well,in a couple of words-THAT WILL NOT HAPPEN.do you really think that nolan who is a producer on superman movie and more superman movies will just walk away from batman.he,his brother and david goyer will still be there.i am 100% sure that nolan wont direct number 4,but i am 99% sure that he will stay as producer, writer along with his brother.and in that case bale would stay as batman, and they can get another amazing director just to direct.and i honestly dont see WB and DC going in any other direction now that they finally found perfect tone and way to do batman after all this years...

I think it'll be a good thing to see something new also, but really it's been a great thing that he's done. CBMs will forever be better off imo.

It sucks that Nolan and Bale wants this to be the final outing. I really hope another good director will take over reigns after the next as long as the script is good. The same goes for a good actor for Batman. I'm still ticked that Riddler won't be in the next film.

blueorangeny - 11/30/2010, 5:01 PM
Why is everyone treating it as a final movie. He just said chapter, a book has many chapters. Until this mother [frick]er says, "This will be my last Batman film" then that's when I believe it's the last one. As of now I see it as just the trilogy, still a possibility that he'll do another set of Bat films, JLA (participation) or World's Finest.

All about his world, again bs, that is so broad. I say it because how real can it be for a man falling from a 50 or more story building, grabbing onto a woman and both landing on a car with out a scratch. Again bs.

I finish off once again, this quote from Nolan doesn't close the door. He just says chapter. If he would say my last Batman film then different story

I can't wait until a better Batman movie comes, one that has nothing to do with Nolan or Bale. Hopefully the one
after this and the future ones after Nolan's third Batman
movie won't suck.

Nolan does everything right. No way this movie is a let down. He seems to take his time, focus on the little things, and not just try to make a good CBM but just a great movie in general. So stoked.

blueorangeny - 11/30/2010, 6:51 PM
@ xXkryptoniteXx - I wasn't it will be his last on the contrary. I'm saying that to me this doesn't mean he's done, he's only done with the trilogy. If had said I'm done with Batman then ok. The movie does rock the falling off was regards to being about all this realism with his Batman

@ CaptainProg: Everybody didn't explode. Joker bent over and the explosion sent the glass to shatter on all the cops in front of him. Watch it again.

Whatever Nolan decides will be great! His movies have set and raised the bar for CBM's each time they come out. The third will no doubt inspire even more greatness in future CBM's to come! Maybe this time we'll get THE perfect CBM.....well...maybe?? ...
powerbomb1411
powerbomb1411 - 11/30/2010, 8:31 PM
@brazilianbatman Reboot Titanic? Really? You know that was inspired by fact right (and poorly). Titanic and Batman are two completely different categories.

And I can't wait for Nolan to leave Batman. Then maybe we can get a good live action Batman film.

And a DCMU is not hard to do, nor is a Marvel verse. All this talk about equal screen time for all the characters is just stupid. All the studios needs to do is hire actors for multiple pictures and let them know they're not bigger than the character. X-Men is a great example of what not to do. Marvel's personal work is a great example of what to do.

You don't need nor should you give every character equal screen time. Sure every now and then a smaller character gets a bigger chunk than normal, but odds are Hawkeye will never be as big as Iron Man. The only difference between doing a cartoon tv/movie compared to doing a movie is the budget. You'll never see equal screen time in cartoons, it's all about who is most popular.
