Did Christopher Nolan Break DC? (Video Discussion)

Did Christopher Nolan Break DC? (Video Discussion)

Now that the DCEU is finally back on track (thanks in no small part to Wonder Woman), we examine Chris Nolan's enormous influence on the movies and TV shows that followed his Dark Knight trilogy.

Chris Nolan breathed new life into DC movies, reinventing Batman for a new generation and creating some of the most iconic moments in comic book movie history. But in so doing, did he sow the seeds for a period of lacklustre movie making that DC is only now, in 2017, starting to recover from?

In this video we’re not trying to blame Nolan for DC’s shortcomings - we have massive respect for the guy - but argue that this enormous success created a huge wave of influence on the movies, TV shows and a certain director that followed...

Feel free to chime in with your own ideas and ENJOY!

The idea that Christopher Nolan somehow hindered the development of the DCEU is more ridiculous, mororonic Nolan hating nonsense that infests this and other like sites with people who think being critical of Nolan makes them "smart". Clearly it does not!

Is it Nolan's fault that Zack Snyder refused to listen to his story ideas and wanted to have a super-powered WWE match in Metropolis and then have Superman kill his enemy? NO! He advised against it and to my recollection it was the two biggest PROBLEMS with the film. It was not realism or the humanizing of Superman which was probably among some of the reasons that makes it the best of the DCEU films so far (along with Wonder Woman). That is what ruined the film, it was Snyder's over the top efforts to be more comic-booky.

The next fallacy that has seems to have confused the makers of this video is the completely boneheaded notion that Nolan created a dour and depressing world. It was not...throughout the Dark Knight films Batman continued to have and show hope in Gotham city, and also throughout - others were inspired by him which again showed hope in people including, Jim Gordon, John Blake, Rachel Dawse and even the people of Gotham who refused to blow up the ferries in the Dark Knight. The films also had humor from Wayne asking if the bat-mobile came in Black...to Jim Gordon proclaiming he has to "get me one of those" upon seeing the bat-mobile in action. Both Alfred and Lucius Fox were continued sources of comedy as they bantered with Wayne and others. This is all overlooked of course to promote this stupid and asinine opinion that Nolan's films were depressing.

The characterization of the Dark Knight Rises as being poorly written is more Nolan hating bull-crap that ignores the fact that audiences - as measured by every organization that measures audience reception - ranks it among the best CBM films of all time. But who needs data or facts...the makers of this video clearly are not concerned about such things.

Finally Nolan may have grounded the films in a realistic setting, but by no means did it hinder him or anyone from coming after him from introducing "superpowers' and other unrealistic (therefore fantastic) elements to his film. Within Nolan's own films he had plenty of fantastic elements which include but is not limited: a Bat-mobile that jumped from building top to building top; a devise that summoned bats that broke through a window to provide cover for Batman; a man who walked around Gotham with half of his face removed and exposed; an aircraft that can evade missiles; and Bane, a super-villain that can punch through solid concrete without flinching - which I consider super-powered. But facts...who needs those!

I hope there is actual thought put into any future videos or editorials because it is severely lacking in this one.

Enough with the praising of MOS. It's a joyless exercise in pulling the wool over certain people's eyes as being more "meaningful and relate able" when really that is such a f%$#%ing joke. It's about as appealing as standing in front of a wall having just been coated with toned down dark grey paint moving a turned up to high blow dryer back and forth trying to speed up the drying time. MOS is a morose, depressing, sometimes overly loud dull exercise in "trying to be" self important and "deeper" (hint it's not) when it's really just crappy writing and film making. Of course others will then say that it's better than the total other side of the spectrum (Donner) which is also BS. No one is expecting that wild of a swing either. Either/or is silly. There is certainly a sweet spot to hit in which the character of Superman can sing and stand out, be relate able and GASP....actually be enjoyable at the same time.
Thank god for WW. The asshats (who have the appeal of lawn furniture) that have appeared in those first 3 DC films (especially Snyder's) aren't fit or worthy enough to even hold the WW of the DCEU's lariat.
As far as Nolan's 3 Bat films go I am not much of a fan. BB's was the best of the lot (at least until the last 30-40 minutes of the movie) and while I understand how some regard those films as CBM "masterpieces" AND that they are well crafted films to be sure..... they aren't great Batman films. Most of Nolan's films have good scripts or are well filmed and edited etc....but they mostly lack heart anyway. A GREAT Batman film has yet to be made and maybe with Geoff Johns help and the pressure of keeping up with Marvel it finally can be. Having said all of that aspects of Affleck were BY FAR the best on screen Batman we have seen and I am saying that having detested BvS (except for the WW parts which were the best part of the movie).
Thanks to the re tooling that's going on, the success of WW, and some (hopefully) soft re booting the DCEU can move up to where it has always belonged. Characters that are bigger than life but relateable in some way with out needing to make them into unappealing assholes. Wondering why that could be? Check out 75 plus years of comic book history.
