Todd Phillips’ Joker sequel, officially titled Joker: Folie à Deux, is currently rounding out its supporting cast, and the latest addition to the already very impressive ensemble is Academy Award nominee (no, we can't believe she hasn't won either) Catherine Keener.
As per usual, no details on her character were provided, but she is said to have a major "secret role" in the film, so there's a chance she might be playing someone from the comic books.
Joaquin Phoenix and Zazie Beetz are set to reprise their respective roles as Arthur Fleck and Sophie Dummond, and we recently learned that Brendan Gleeson has also joined the cast.
"Folie à Deux" loosely translates to "madness for two," a condition that is generally defined as an identical or similar mental disorder affecting two or more individuals, usually the members of a close family. The title reveal led to speculation that Harley Quinn may be involved, and sure enough, we'd later learn that none other than Lady Gaga had been cast in the role.
Details are few and far between, but the A Star Is Born actress obviously won't be playing the same version of Harley Margot Robbie portrayed in Birds of Prey and The Suicide Squad.
The $150 million-budgeted sequel will include "complicated musical sequences - though we recently learned that it'll be "more like A Star Is Born than In the Heights." The comparison could be read a few different ways, but it would seem to suggest that the film won't be a burst-into-song at the drop of a hat type deal, and instead feature a handful of musical performances (we'd bet on them taking place in Arthur's mind).
Keener is know for roles on the likes of Being John Malkovich, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Capote and Into The Wild. More recently, she appeared in Jordan Peele's Get Out and Netflix's The Adam Project.
Joker: Folie à deux is set to hit theaters on October 4, 2024. You can check out the announcement teaser below.
