JUSTICE LEAGUE Concept Artist Says Ben Affleck's THE BATMAN Script Was The Best He's Ever Read

Justice League concept artist Jay Oliva has been pretty outspoken about the Snyder Cut and he's now taken to social media to shed some light on what Ben Affleck and Geoff Johns had planned for The Batman!

Allow us to tell you a story. Once upon a time, Ben Affleck was supposed to direct The Batman and he was writing a screenplay alongside comic book scribe Geoff Johns. It's believed that would have focused on the Dark Knight squaring off with Deathstroke in what would have undoubtedly been a hard-hitting, action-packed affair. Unfortunately, Affleck then decided he didn't want to direct it.

Then, Matt Reeves came on board and while it initially looked like he would use Affleck and Johns' script, we then learned that he would be starting from scratch...and that Affleck may not star.

So, it's been quite a saga but Justice League concept artist Jay Oliva - who must have been hired to work on The Batman - has now revealed that the script was amazing and the "best Batman script I've ever read." That's high praise indeed given how beloved Tim Burton and Christopher Nolan's work on the franchise has been and it's just a shame we'll probably never get to see it become a reality...

Do concept artists generally get allowed to read scripts for films?

@Whaley87 - You have to know what you're sketching out, it varies, depending on working relationship with the filmmaker, Jay Olivia stands out, he's very intrenched in production, he's also a Director himself, he Directed the animated The Dark Knight Returns among others.

@ARMUS - Ah right, fair enough then.

I'm sorry I was skeptical when this guy said the Snyder cut was basically done. I didn't think a concept artis would be privy to the whole process considering it's mostly a pre-production job.

But you seriously expect me to believe that some concept artist had access and read a script that was presumably highly protected. For a film that seemingly wasn't even in pre-production.

Sorry not buying it. I'm sure some people will say I'm wrong but I don't believe this for a second.

Yea okay, I think I'm just about tired of this "shoulda, woulda, coulda" stuff with the DCEU.

If Ben Affleck's script isn't gonna be used in the Batman film, there's no point telling me how great it would have been or I would have loved it. It's not happening.

I really wanna believe this.
Because I’m a massive DC Fan, Affleck/BatFleck Fan, and adore gone baby gone-live by night.
There’s no reason for me not to.
Except that from the very beginning to what was the end Affleck kept saying was he couldn’t get the scrip right.
I’m sure he had the idea.
I cant imagine anyone who won best picture for a studio wouldn’t.
But overzealous praise with no real explanation and hyperbole is just that.
Hyperbole.
I guess we’ll never really know.

@Kevwebsz

Lol I don’t think they need to rope anyone. Matt Reeves and Batman sounds amazing.

If they had took time and not pressure Ben Affleck so much then yes it might have happened.

Fella is an Oscar winning screen writer, no doubt his script was decent.

The best Batman script he’s ever read? How many Batman scripts has he actually read?

This isn’t the same concept artist who keeps saying that a fully finished Snyder cut of Justice League exists is it?

@bcom - Oh it is. Same guy.
