THE BATMAN Director Matt Reeves Reveals Whether He Thinks Robin Could Work In The Grounded Batverse

Like Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Trilogy, The Batman is set in a world not too unlike our own. In fact, it's easy to imagine Robert Pattinson's Caped Crusader being part of our reality, but that might not leave much room for some of Gotham City's more fantastical denizens to appear down the line.

Having now spent some time with this Batman, it's hard to imagine him heading into action alongside a teenage sidekick like Robin. Despite that, director Matt Reeves seemed open to the idea of introducing the Boy Wonder during a recent conversation with Happy Sad Confused's Josh Horowitz.

"Maybe. I'll just say maybe," The Batman helmer responded when asked if Robin could one day join the Batverse. "I don't know. Here's the thing, I have a lot of ideas about what I want to do. I'm not sure what the next story is. For me, whatever that story is going to be, it's going to take these characters, and specifically Batman, and put them in some kind of emotional jeopardy."

"So, when you talk about what you're talking about, there may be a really interesting story. There have to be emotional stakes to get drawn into that character's story. I don't want that character to become a cypher. I don't want to be like, 'Okay, it wasn't an origin tale, but you know what, that was kind of the origins, and now he's just perfect.' No, you need to test the character again and again."

"For me, there might be something in that. I don't know," Reeves continued, referring to Batman's iconic sidekick. "There's a deep dive that already happened in the beginning and now I'm going to have to deep dive again if we get a chance to make another one, so we shall see."

It's been a long time since Robin's dynamic with Batman has been explored on the big screen, and The Batman franchise feels like the right place to revisist it. It doesn't appear as if the director is giving what comes next too much thought right now, though we wouldn't be surprised if the Dark Knight recruits someone like Dick Grayson or Jason Todd to aid his war on crime.

The Batman is now playing in theaters worldwide.

People really need to stop asking Reeves about the sequel.

@BestAtWhatIDo - how can they not? The movie is a huge success already, so it’s the next natural question

@Dabs - I get that, but any reporter who's done any research would see he hasn't planned out the sequel. He can only give the same answer so many times.

It’s long overdue and I think there’s never been a more opportune time to do it. This iteration of Batman being thrust into becoming a guardian of someone who suffered the same pain is loaded with all sorts of character and story depth.

@BlackBeltJones - I think it’s going to feel rushed if introducing any batfam before the end of the trilogy

@3Rill - I don’t necessarily think we should see him in the second film but I wouldn’t mind a third film being centered around Dick’s origin and Bruce trying to keep him away from The Batman and his mission only for it to end with him ultimately taking up the Robin mantle.

I think by a third film Batman would see that he is very alone. He feels it in his mission, and mentions it frequently, but he is alone personally, as well. He has Alfred, and Catwoman is trying to work her way past his emotional barriers, but he is very much alone (he was like this in The Long Halloween and going into Dark Victory). Enter Dick Grayson. Bruce, who still struggles to keep himself from being vulnerable, can’t fully hide that loving part of himself anymore. Because that warm, happy, bubbly, energetic little boy who Bruce has taken under his wing brings it out in him every time.

I think by the end of the Trilogy you could see an emotional and temperamental transformation in Bruce brought out by Grayson.

@BlackBeltJones - I agree, that emotionally coherent Batman can in turn be the beacon of hope Batman had been envisioned to be

@3Rill - this kind of thinking is what gets characters kicked down the road further and further and never touched. I mean how many of these do we realistically expect Reeves and Pattinson to do? And then they leave and WB reboots again, and you say "well it's too early to do so-and-so" and the cycle just begins again.

@BlackBeltJones - yup. I wish they were wanting to do more than three film but this universe has so much potential.

I would love to see them adapt Batman: Under the red hood story line in the future but in my opinion, I think this Batman should be put to more test and develop before the audience eyes, won’t wanna see a batfam on the first trilogy
Grayson should be the first side kick and exploring his relationship with Batman, how it made Batman a better person but Bruce being a hard case which could be a factor to why he went solo, afterwards they can do under the red hood

Just my opinion though

This is the Batman that needs a Robin the most.

@TheHumanSpider2 - From the way he was looking at that semi orphaned kid, it could work. But would prefer a proper dick grayson who's quite obviously an adolescent.

@TheHumanSpider2 - 100% agree. Hopefully its not like Frank Miller's All Star Batman & Robin The Boy Wonder though...lol
3Rill
3Rill - 3/7/2022, 9:04 AM
@TheHumanSpider2 - yeah he does but let him morph first, give it time otherwise the world building would feel totally off and rushed immediately, Batman needs to learn, this is year two, he’s not been broken, he is in the shadows, Bruce Wayne still needs some work, appreciate the fact that it wasn’t trying to be bale’s Batman, I also love the vampire vibes Batman gives when tracking his prey but let him pass the tests and then we can move to the next stage
I really like how he was developed in Btas
TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 3/7/2022, 6:07 PM
@krayzeman - We dont talk about All Stars Batman.
TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 3/7/2022, 6:10 PM
@UnderBelly - Oh yeah, it has to be Dick Grayson.
Maybe Jason Todd would fit better in this Gotham, but this Batman doesnt need an angry kid who is mad at the world, he needs the kid who represents all what Bruce wants to be, a kid who gives Bruce hope...and that is Dick.

Now that Matt Reeves managed to show the detective side of Batman, it would be cool if he explores the Bat family, since no live action movie has properly done it yet

Robin is a must for this Bat, but yeah leave this man alone with his thoughts. He's got plans, but clearly is taking this one film at a time. This is smart

I think Dick Grayson should be in the next one, but not as Robin. Let the character simmer and grow a relationship with Bruce before he's already out in the streets fighting henchmen.

Save that for the 3rd one.

@KWilly - they can introduce the flying graysons which Thomas takes Bruce to the circus during a father and son bonding time
They were murdered after their retirement cos they were involved in some form of conspiracy which left poor dick Grayson to Bruce’s care

He absolutely can. A smart director will find a way.

I think Dick Grayson is needed. I'm biased because he shares my #1 Robin spot, but I think his personality is a great contrast to Bruce's. While he's a recluse and socially awkward, knowing the history of mental health in his family, those things may not be totally because of the death of his parents. Dick on the other hand, while not far in age from Bruce when his parents died, grew up in a circus and has had to deal with a lot of different personalities. That's from the people in the circus and the attendees. So he's going to have more personality, be more personable, engaging and chatty. In other words, even at a young age, he'll be more emotionally intelligent than Bruce. There will be a contrast in their roles as Batman and Robin, and as Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson.

The Arkham asylum show can explore Barbara Gordon character development, probably a teenage girl trying to fit in and find her place in the world cos she lost her mother at a very age and his father being a detective gives little father and daughter time a bit scarce
since this will be set after the Batman, it can be a hint at what the future can be, that doesn’t mean she is a must in that series, just an interesting touch

I kinda hope he looks to Batman & Mr. Freeze for inspiration for the next movie. It had a fairly balanced story with Batman, Freeze, Dick and Barbara. And they could use Barbara's abduction and Dick giving chase as the introduction to those characters

@bkmeijer - the entire city is flooded and its not gonna drain. its a swamp now. come winter, it should all FREEZE ;)
