THE BATMAN Director Matt Reeves Weighs In On Robert Pattinson's Condiment King Hopes For The Sequel

During The Batman's press tour, star Robert Pattinson made it clear he would like his Caped Crusader to battle Condiment King, and director Matt Reeves has now shared his thoughts on the comedic villain!

Condiment King first appeared in Batman: The Animated Series, with The Joker using mind control to force Buddy Standler to adopt the ridiculous persona. No one took him seriously, and the villain's threat to douse unsuspecting restaurant patrons with hot sauce didn't exactly terrify the masses.

Like Harley Quinn, the character eventually made the leap to the page where he was renamed Mitchell Mayo. He also wasn't taken overly seriously, but did seemingly win a fan in The Batman star Robert Pattinson.

The actor gushed about the character while promoting the 2022 hit, and while we find it hard to believe he'll ever be included in the R-Rated franchise, director Matt Reeves has now weighed in. ComicBook.com asked the filmmaker if he has any villains in mind for The Batman 2, prompting him to bring up Pattinson's love for Condiment King.

"Oh gosh, I don't know. I really couldn't answer that because I really don't know, and also people are going to be rampantly speculating," Reeves responded, careful not to give anything away. "I will say that to me the funniest thing that Rob [Pattinson] did the last time that we were on the press tour is that he kept talking about how great he thought it would be if we did Condiment King because he loved the idea of somebody just dousing somebody in mustard."

"I won't commit to saying that Condiment King is going to make a reference but I'll just use that as an answer to your question because I don't have an answer to your question."

There may well be a way to write Condiment King into this movie, but we're not banking on Pattinson's gruff vigilante allowing a costumed thug to cover him with mustard.

Still, you never know what kind of Easter Eggs will be included, and with it now confirmed that the "Batverse" will live on despite DC Studios' own DCU plans, Reeves is free to continue telling the stories he likes. Whether the DCEU relaunch will have its own Caped Crusader remains to be seen.

The Batman sequel is currently being written, but doesn't have a release date.

I like how Condiment King has become the new joke after Kite Man suddenly became a very tragic character. Maybe Reeves can do the same for Condiment King

@bkmeijer1 - not really suddenly. He's been joked about at least since the animated series.

@Origame - That's where he debuted. He was a plot device more than an actual character.

It's a good test of how deep someone goes on Batman.
If they mention Condiment King as an obscure villain they'd like to see, they don't go that deep.

@ObserverIO - ...so he's always been a joke. That's the point.
ObserverIO

@Origame - pretty much. More of a running gag, rather than an actual character.

Every single appearance of Condiment King since that episode has been used only as a joke.
There has never been a single Condiment King Batman story ever.

If Condiment King is even referenced in The Batman II then Saru-Gunn's arm has grown long indeed

@ProfessorWhy - the really big question being: ‘can he hurl snow all the way from Mordor?’

I can’t help but imagine watching this series alongside the latest iteration at WB’s attempt at emulating the MCU is going to be like watching the Nolan trilogy alongside the Snyderverse. Night and day.

He’s no more or less ridiculous than 90% of comic-book characters so why not?

I could imagine a King Condiment as a victim of Hugo Strange. Using environmental, emotional, cognitive, and dissociative state induction techniques, Strange brainwashes emotionally vulnerable subjects.

I don't think a full on adaptation would work in the batman universe. However, maybe he chases a criminal who grabs some ketchup from a hot dog stand as a last resort to stopping batman could work. Then when he meets Gordon he could say "are you bleeding?" Batman replies "ketchup" then Gordon asks "someone tried to take you out with ketchup?" To which batman gives an annoyed look.

@Origame - I saw someone comment in the Pattinson article a couple days ago and said maybe they could have Bruce in the cave talking to Alfred and just show Bruce scrubbing some yellow and red stuff off of the Bat suit.

Like, don't even show Condiment King at all, or even make reference to the stuff on the suit. Just have him scrubbing it out as an Easter egg.

That's probably the only way they could make that work in a serious movie like this.

@CorndogBurglar - or you could have the Batman already catch him and is handing him over to the Gotham police. It could be at a museum where he tries to ruin some famous art (a 1989 Batman reference sort of)

Y’all act like mustard gas isn’t a thing. It wouldn’t be that hard to do a VERY dark take on Condiment King…

@EarlChai - but is there ketchup gas?
EarlChai
EarlChai - 1/17/2023, 1:12 PM
@noahthegrand - Tomatoes are notoriously acidic. If Bale’s Batman could get a fingerprint off a fired bullet, I’m sure CK could develop some kind of red, tomato-based acid to spray at people.

If I had to choose villains never used in films and that, within Matte Reeves' proposal, were more realistic, I would go with:
- Firefly (they could use Brendan Fraser´s version !)
- Hugo Strange
- Anarky
- Azrael´s order
Repian
Repian - 1/16/2023, 8:59 AM
@cadunovaesbr - Toyman similar to Unabomber. He could turn drones into bombs to launch an airstrike on a commercial area, killing hundreds of people.
Repian

@Repian - I could even imagine the Toyman bombing on Black Friday as a critique of consumerism.
