THE BATMAN Gearing Up For $110 Opening Weekend Following Estimated $55 Million Friday Haul

The Batman has swooped straight to the top of the box office, and while current estimates point to a $110 million opening, there's every chance Matt Reeves' DC Comics adaptation will soar even higher...

Deadline is reporting that current industry estimates point to The Batman earning $110 million over the course of its opening weekend in North America. That would make it the first movie since Spider-Man: No Way Home to debut with north of $100 million, though the anticipation is that these numbers will only continue to grow over the weekend (we should know more later).

As of right now, The Batman is taking aim at the sixth biggest March opening of all-time behind Beauty and the Beast ($174.7 million), Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice ($166 million), Captain Marvel ($153.4 million), The Hunger Games ($152.5 million) and Alice in Wonderland ($116.1 million).

The Batman had an estimated $55 million Friday (including Thursday previews) and these numbers are fantastic, especially in the current climate. While DC movies don't appear to have the same level of popularity as Marvel Studios' offerings (mostly due to more than a few bad movies in this "DCEU" era), this just goes to show that the Caped Crusader remains a major draw with the right creative team.

The Batman made $4 million from this week's IMAX previews, and $21.6 million on Thursday.

"Delivering the definitive take on the World’s Greatest Detective, The Batman is a sweeping, cinematic masterpiece that’s both DC’s best film and one of the most captivating, relentless, and unforgettable comic book movies ever made," we said in our recent review of The Batman.

“it's worth noting even the latest Spider-Man movie only opened with $121.9 million!”

No Way Home opened with 260 million!

I was not a fan of the grounded format from the dark knight trilogy, went and saw The Batman and loved it. They nailed the tone, the grounded felt right at every angle. It felt like a batman movie, not a Bruce Wayne movie. The cast was all amazing. The batmobile felt like it's own character. The bat suit was spot on. The spoiler free bad? Riddler was kind of forgettable and the villain costumes were too grounded. All in all, a must see movie though, very excited to see the next one. Oh and don't stick around for the after credits scene.

@dragon316 - I was not happy with Bane at all. I loved Scarecrow and liked two face but they felt like a last minute thoughts.

@Manmarvel - I thought it was dumb when, in “Da Batman,” when Batman is in that high speed chase with the Penguin, a semi and its trailer explode causing a traffic jam. Even though the trailer flipped from the explosion, it landed back down perfectly on the ground at the right moment to form a ramp for Batman to drive over. I literally rolled eyes at this scene. 🙄

@HorseWengh - lol I started to gringe in that moment too. I did just finish watching FF9, and the convenience ramp in the batman was far less far fetched than anything in FF9 LOL.

The Batman 110 million is the number they predicted. Three things I keep hearing that will hurt The Batman at the box office.

1) Long
2) Boring
3) Not kid friendly to dark.

@DoubleD - yup its basically the antithesis of a Marvel movie. People who need "comedy" and action every 5 mins will despise this

I just watched it and I thought it wasn’t very good, I found it very boring. It’s a valid take on the character but not one that really holds any interest for me. It’s weird, the more “realistic” you make the movie or world around the character the more stupid he looks. Like just when he was walking around the police station dressed like that. It just looks so bland, ridiculous and unimaginative. It’s not about the tone, I’ve seen much more darker thrillers, but the characters in those were way more interesting and better written. Everyone in this seem like they were bored with everything happening with the exception of the Penguin, who had some life and character to him.

@John75 - unimaginative? you've seen Batman RUNNING down a hallway from cops in what adaptation? That's what's I thought. "Very poor choice of words". It was Adam West Batman vibes running down that hallway. I loved that cuz we've never seen that. Batman just disappears with plot invisibly in most films when it comes to his escape.

@McMurdo - to clarify your point, this is an imaginative film because it shows Batman running down a hallway from the police?

@Itwasme - to clarify my point, no it's simply not unimaginative for Batman running down a hallway from cops

@John75 - Nothing about this movie stylistically and narratively was bland. You must dickride the hell out of Snyder and Schumacher's fantasy iteration, I assume.

Bitch and complain about everything. For years you nerds wanted a Detective driven story, with a reinvention of The Riddler since Nolan, y'all wanted more style in the vein of the Animated Series & pondered questions like "What If David Fincher directed Batman?" This movie does everything perfectly blending the aspects of Nolan and Burton. Essentially an Arkham Verse brought to live action. and you complain. Please watch Batman Begins, Dark Knight, and TDKR over and over since you feel that is the quintessential Batman

I've been wanting a detective noire Batman movie for a very very long time, and I highly enjoyed this movie and loved most of it... but it had a few too many problems to be a masterpiece. It was by no means perfect.

I was surprised by how bored I felt at times. Unfortunately the detective aspect dragged for me a bit in the middle and left me asking "ok, how many scenes do we need of Batman and Jim standing next to each other and exposition dumping the mystery to us? I realize that's how old old crime noire novellas are paced, a detective chasing leads and questioning people. There was just too much exposition filler, at a certain point I realized Batman and Gordon were just straight up telling the audience what the answers to the plot was instead of it unfolding. And there were several scenes of that. After a while I was begging for a cool action sequence I hadn't scene in a trailer already but never got one.

I love what Matt Reeves did to build the world in this one, I just pray to got we get actual freak villains in the next one. I wanna see Killer Croc swimming in flooded Gotham and it's sewers, Poison Ivy taking over a building with flowers, Bane taking over a military facility, Mr Freeze occupying a frozen Hospital, Hugo Strange taking over Arkham and Joker running Ace Chemicals with Harley.

And I want Battinson to take on them all!!
ElricReturns
ElricReturns - 3/5/2022, 7:57 AM
I must add, the potential this movie sets up is MASSIVE sequel wise! If Matt Reeves from here leans into the freakshow side of Batmans world, the unrealistic stuff like Batman being a master strategist with unbelievable Ninja-tech and impossible level of skills to never have a thug land a hit on him unless they too have advanced training, and let Reeves Gotham become populated by villains like the video games and comics.... then his sequels will evolve this trilogy into legendary perfection.

Adversely, if he stays too beholden to grounded and gritty and noire, this trilogy risks becoming boring.

I think I’ll give whatever sequels a miss and wait for the next reboot. They’re gonna run out of titles for new Batman films starting from scratch aren’t they.

I watched it yesterday and it was magnificent.

Cast: Pattinson killed it in the role. I love how the Bruce Wayne charactes was almost non-existent - a dark, brooding shell and he was 100% committed to his Batman persona. Eerie and excellent performance by Dano, Wright and Turturro.

Zoe was so adorable as Selina too and I want more of Farrell's Penguin. Andy Serkis was one of the best Alfred interpretations I've seen and I really wish he has more screen time in the sequel.

Story: Loved the showcase of detective skills and really brought me Zodiac vibes with the riddles and clues sprinkled throughout. Excellent final act too. My only critique is that the Wayne's subplot could've been trimmed down a bit, as it slightly affected the pacing towards the middle.

Visuals/Cinematography/Action: Gotham finally looked like this dirty, soaked, crime-infested mess of a city that we haven't seen since BB. Some absolutely stunning shots, as well as amazingly shot hand-to-hand fights. THAT Batmobile entrance and chase were the highlights of the film for me and the POV shots during the chase (as well as other bits throughout the film) really made this film visually distinct and beautiful to look at. Kudos to Greig Fraser - the most visually stunning film I've seen since... Dune. No surprise here, as this was the last project he worked as a DP for.

Score: This is Giacchino's best score yet. It had traits of Elfman and Zimmer's works, but it also was its own thing entirely. It really brought the idea of Batman as a horror entity who is feared among the criminals of Gotham. The opening montage with Bruce's narration, while "Can't Fight City Halloween" played on the background hade me goose bumping of joy.

Overall, this was a piece of art and possibly the 2nd best Batman film after TDK (maybe 3rd, as I considerer TDKR in the same ballpark). It is the most screen time Batman has ever had abd at times the whole film brought me Burton vibes with its dark and gritty look. My only nit-pick is the story dragging a little in the middle, where you could really feel the 3-hour length of the whole thing.

9.5/10
