THE BATMAN PART II Director Matt Reeves Breaks Silence On Script Progress; Confirms THE PENGUIN Season 2 Talks

The Batman Part II writer and director Matt Reeves has finally broken his silence on the sequel's script and, believe it or not, it's good news! The filmmaker also weighs in on The Penguin season 2 plans.

Much has been said about what's happening with The Batman Part II in recent weeks. DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has done his best to keep fans updated - better explaining where things stand earlier this week - but filmmaker Matt Reeves has today broken his silence.

Talking to Catwoman actor Zoë Kravitz for Variety, the writer and director confirmed, "Yeah, we’re finishing the script. We’re going to be shooting next year."

During the conversation, Kravitz said to Reeves, "You’re an incredibly meticulous filmmaker. I just asked you how it’s going with writing ['Part II'] and you said, 'Slow,' and I think that’s a wonderful quality, because you care so much."

Elaborating on "slow," The Batman helmer detailed his creative process and why the sequel hasn't taken shape as quickly as some fans might like.

"It’s wonderful, except for the speed of getting something done," Reeves explained. "The thing is that for me, I feel like it’s not a choice. I always feel like I would never do it the way I’m doing it, except that that’s the only way I know how to do it."

"The metaphor that I use when I’m talking to my partners is that writing and filmmaking is like being in a dark room," he continued. "Everything you need is in the room, but there are no lights, and you’re on hands and knees. And when something connects, you go, 'Oh, that’s something.'"

There are still theories that the Bat-Verse will be folded into the DCU, though it seems unlikely given how specific a plan James Gunn has for The Brave and the Bold. Still, as an Elseworlds project, The Batman franchise continues to expand, most recently with The Penguin TV series.

Given the critical success of that series and high ratings on HBO, it likely won't surprise you to learn that a second season is in the early stages of development, presumably to fill the void between The Batman Part II and Part III (at this rate, we won't see that until 2029 or 2030).

"Yeah, we’re talking to [showrunner] Lauren [LeFranc] about doing another season," Reeves confirmed. "That was a special experience. I just feel really fortunate. These characters don’t belong to me; they belong to the world. It comes down to whether you can approach them in a way that expresses something personal."

Very little has been revealed about The Batman Part II, including which villain the Dark Knight will face. Hush, The Joker, The Court of Owls, and Mr. Freeze remain the most popular candidates among fans but who knows what Reeves has planned for "The Batman Epic Crime Saga."

The Batman Part II is currently set to be released in theaters on October 2, 2026.

"There are still theories that the Bat-Verse will be folded into the DCU."

No, there aren't.

Honestly, feels like Reeves used what creative energy he had for the character within that first film. It was all style over substance. He knew he wanted to Kurt Cobain Bruce and keep it grounded, and he THOUGHT he was making a smart detective thriller in the vein of Se7en but his Batman was essentially incompetent to the point of it being absolutely baffling why the police were letting this guy into crime scenes. He also regularly put civilians in danger for the sake of scene aesthetics. And now we are struggling to hammer down how to transition him in part 2.

It's obvious Reeves is struggling with where to adequately take the character and have it be compelling. He honestly shoulda had Lauren Lefranc help co write because his writing partner for part 2 doesn't have a special filmography by any means. Can this be Bruce's MTV unplugged? Or is this the Variety article where we find out the drug habit in many ways tarnished and eclipsed the pregnancy.

Time will tell. But im glad the DCU is getting a shot at a comic accurate Bats whilst Reeves figures it all out.

@McMurdo - I would actually prefer Penguin just be the villain of Batman II at this point just so we can get more of Ferrell in the role.

I think this is the most logical step. There’s nowhere else to take penguin for a s2 🤷‍♂️

@HulkisHoly - Yes. I loved Penguin and want Oz and Sofia back. But a second season just feels like it wouldn’t add much. Make them villains in the second one, and maybe throw in a new villain as a more physical threat that one of them hires. But a season 2 just feels like it would diminish the first one if it wasn’t as good.

@mountainman -

Exactly. It would diminish the first. The story was told. The second film should have an Arkham breakout and tease Sofia coming for penguin or something like that.

@HulkisHoly - I’m ok with a show like that where it continues the story, but I’d like a different central character. Oz and Sofia had their stories told. I would still prefer Gordon or GPD be the center of the next story that is told.

@HulkisHoly - I like the idea of an Arkham breakout, but I think a wider Court of Owls story to give context to all of that would be fun.

Throw in a few villains from the gallery in there for fun and I think it could be a solid film.

I sure AF hope they don't fold this into the DCU. It works perfectly fine on its own as a grounded imagining of the Batman and his Rogues.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 12/18/2024, 4:14 PM
@ModHaterSLADE - I know it is true to source and made to work in the comics but the second you have Superman across the River from Batman his solo stories loose their weight with the sort of grounded version we had with Nolan and now this.

That is not to say I am against an interconnected universe where both exist and cross paths, all in for that if done well, just that if they do a Batman like this first THEN fold Superman and others into the mix you loose more than you gain for the stories set specificaly in Gotham.

I know some have issues with any reference to the multiverse but DC has infinite Earths and all can normaly get there head around the idea that one franchise does not exist on the same one as others released at the same time especialy if the tone differs greatly. We have had multiple of the same DC character on the go at the same time before such as the Flash, folk get it and rarely confused by such things unless they totaly mess up with marketing (like Sony trying to imply their villainverse is part of the MCU all the time).
ModHaterSLADE
ModHaterSLADE - 12/18/2024, 4:55 PM
@Apophis71 - Exactly, there's no way Superman or other established heroes let Gotham run amok because it may have some Vigilante out there who can only do so much. It loses tension when the audience knows Batman can just ask Superman for help, his so called grounded villains just look like a joke after that.

The goodwill on this film is slowly evaporating. They need to kick it into high gear. Or better yet, ditch the hole thing an build the universe around Nolan's Batman.

If the Batman 2 were to fail (which I am not really hoping for) it might lead to a re-look at Nolan's Batman. Same with Gunn's Superman (which I would not mind) might lead to the return of Henry Cavill (although he is quite busy these days).
RolandD
RolandD - 12/18/2024, 9:15 PM
@Forthas - It’s a pipe dream but nobody is going to change your mind. 😉 Even if Nolan wanted to do it, his relationship with Warner’s has soured. Bale has said he would only return to the role if Nolan was doing it. I would love to see Cavill come back someday, like if they ever did a Kingdom Come. In my humble opinion, the best thing that can happen for us is fans is that the Batman II, Superman and The Brave and the Bold are successful, and by that I mean quality also because I don’t think they’re going to return to the other actors.
RolandD
RolandD - 12/18/2024, 9:16 PM
@Forthas - Nolan has also said he’s done with superhero movies. There’s no guarantee that Bale or Nolan would never return in spite of what they have said, but I think it’s highly unlikely.

Thank god we finally got some confirmation from the man himself in the sea of rumors and reports…

Considering he told Zoe that they start shooting next year , I feel she would already know that if she was in it so I’m guessing then she’s not?.

Anyway , looking forward to since I’m a big fan of the first one aswell as possibly getting a Penguin S2 going with Lauren Lefranc especially…

Always nice to see a Agents of Shield alum doing well!!.

No Penguin Season 2.

Give us a different villain,Hush for example even a build up to the Court Of Owls, start right back in the past and then have them modern day in The Batman 3.

@marvel72 - I highly doubt Penguin gets a 2nd season, as I don't think he'll make it out of Batman II. Reeves and his team will of course still mention a 2nd season, because if they don't, people will come to the conclusion that he dies int he 2nd movie.

I liked Penguin S1 quite a bit but i am cautious about a S2 more that i think about it…

The rise to power story was well done but idk if him trying to stay in power would be as engaging (he could get into a gang war with an upcoming or encroaching mob boss like Black Mask) but we’ll see if it even happens since it’s only being discussed as of now.

If not then i hope we atleast get a Catwoman show , it’s honestly surprising to me that this wasn’t announced initially.
