THE BATMAN Star Jeffrey Wright Says This Gotham City Is Unlike Any Other Version We've Seen On Screen Before

The Batman star Jeffrey Wright has teased what fans can expect from Matt Reeves' take on Gotham City, promising that this Gotham is unlike any we've seen on screen before because it's more realistic.

The Batman is clearly going to be quite a departure from what we're used to seeing in the DC Extended Universe, with this gritty take on the Dark Knight perhaps more grounded in reality than even Christopher Nolan's. That's seemingly going to be reflected in Gotham City itself, especially if these new comments from Jim Gordon actor Jeffrey Wright are anything to go by.

Talking to IndieWire, the What If...? star explained how filmmaker Matt Reeves managed to find ways to reflect our world in the fictional home of the Caped Crusader.

"I saw the themes around corruption and class tensions and all of the things that he wanted to bring from the outside into this world so it had some relevance," the actor explains. "It’s bringing fiction into non-fiction in a way that’s balanced and really cool."

Wright added that the script presents a Gotham City "unlike Gothams we’d seen before. It was a Gotham we could touch. The way the Batmobile was described, I understood the aesthetic we were going for was something really palpable. If you squint your eyes in some backstreet of New York, you could see it appear."

Gotham is always a character in its own right in these Batman movies, but it sounds like Reeves plans to explore that concept in new ways. How comic book fans will feel about this approach to the source material remains to be seen, but we don't have long to wait until that new trailer is revealed during next month's DC FanDome event.

After multiple delays, The Batman is set to be released in theaters on March 4, 2022.

Cant wait

Reboot Superman into this universe, with someone like Jeff Nichols to direct, his style would mesh well with Reeves

He is doing a Quiet Place spin off

We've had "realistic Gotham" before...

@TheShape9859 - Well with all the places they filmed, it should be very different than Gothams we have seen before

@TheShape9859 -

As the commenter below state, rather than filming in Seattle and Chicago, this one was filmed in London and other places in Europe I believe. Which is PERFECT FOR GOTHAM.

@HulkisHorny - It was filmed in Liverpool and Glasgow, don't think they went to London, that doesn't look much like Gotham.

@HulkisHorny - so that makes it somehow "more realistic"??

@TheShape9859 -

I never said it was more realistic. I prefer gothic Gotham over Detroit like in Nolan movies.

I feel like we are seeing Nolanverse reduex. Except Reeves is no Nolan. And Pats (though an excellent actor) is no Bale. And that Batmobile is sucks.

I don’t get the hype. I hope I am wrong.

@CharleyBologna - right on all counts expect the batmobile, but

Pattinson has become a great actor in the past few years (wont happen but he would probably do well with Phoenix)

Reeves has shown he can tell great, emotional and exciting stories (Even when the characters are apes)

@CharleyBologna - I'm hoping Nolanverse-ish but with a Walmart budget - as if Bruce Wayne hasn't achieved his full share of inheritance yet.

@dracula - I'd love to get Pattison and Phoenix, with the twist being that the Joker's Neighbor's Daughter ends up being the Catwoman we're seeing in The Batman.

Hope we get a good look at Gotham. Make it feel like a real place, filled with different types of people and culture

That is one thing Gotham did really well

We’ve seen NYC Gotham before…

I want gothic Gotham with gargoyles and spires adorning the skyline.

@BlackBeltJones - if 70% of the movie was filmed in Glasgow and Liverpool, then your wish may come true.

@Se4M4NSt4ine - I hope so. The backstreet of NYC part of the comment worried me a little.
