THE BATMAN Star Robert Pattinson Reveals Whether He'd Be Open To Sharing The Screen With Robin

It's been a long time since we've seen Batman and Robin share the screen, and something we simply can't picture for The Batman franchise. Robert Pattinson, however, is open to that team up down the line...

The last time Bruce Wayne teamed up with a sidekick on screen was in 1997's Batman and Robin. Christopher Nolan understandably decided against introducing the Boy Wonder (even if we did get a very different take on Robin in The Dark Knight Rises), while Zack Snyder later confirmed that Dick Grayson had been killed by The Joker in his dark take on the DCEU.

Given the grounded nature of Matt Reeves' vision for The Batman, it's hard to imagine any version of Robin fitting into his take on the material. There's certainly room for a fresh take on Bruce's dynamic with the teenager who follows him into battle, though, and Robert Pattinson seems open to exploring this team-up down the line.

"Yeah, but he has to be 13. That's the only way I'll accept it," the actor joked at a press event when asked about Robin (via Screen Rant). "No, I love Death in the Family and stuff, but I think it'd be so cool. Also people are so scared of it, but it's kind of exciting. I think it would be a really fun addition."

There does appear to be a reluctance about bringing Robin back, hence why Dick is a character who seems to have been relegated to television in TV shows like Titans and the upcoming Gotham Knights. The Caped Crusader taking a child with him to fight criminals and psychopaths is undeniably twisted, and exploring the concept in a future sequel to The Batman could be fascinating.

It remains to be seen whether Reeves is as interested in the idea as Pattinson, but the latter has proven to have a good grasp of the comic books by mentioning "Death in the Family" (the controversial storyline which saw the Clown Prince of Crime brutally murder Jason Todd after a fan vote).

The Batman arrives in theaters on March 4!

A 16-17 year old Dick Grayson in the third film would be great. Maybe do a spin on the origin or have the second movie end with Bruce going off to the circus teasing the inclusion of Robin in the sequel.

@ChrisRed - I think he’s 13.

@ChrisRed - I’d only accept robin if he was trained an entire movie by Bats before he suited up at the end of the next movie. Can’t have bat just slap a suit on him like Batman forever.

@whynot - With only three movies (assuming it's a trilogy) I'd prefer if Bruce went off to see the circus at the end of the second movie. That way we can believe Dick is trained in the years between films.

@ChrisRed - or maybe he goes to the circus at the beginning of the next film. And dick will have that whole movie and most of next to train. Also maybe there will be 6 movies who knows.

@whynot - I would be okay with him meeting Dick at the start of the second movie but I doubt they'll introduce Robin that fast.
6 movies would be nice but I sadly doubt they'll make that many.

@ChrisRed - Circus at the start. Minor role throughout the movie. Dick finding Batman at the end. Some training between movies, some at the start of the next one. We can't have off screen Batman's decision of putting a teenager through this.

The thing you need to remember is that Dick Grayson, otherwise known as Master Dick, is a Robin. I’m sure at some point in a Batman movie there has been a robin, there are literally dozens of them on Earth. Ipso facto, Robin’s already in it and he’s here to stay.

I’ll never understand the apprehension to bring Robin back.

I’ll say, this Batman could surely [frick] Robin up mentally and emotionally considering how emotionally [frick]ed he himself is. He might need Robin more than Robin needs him. Dick could be a ray of optimism, given his mostly easy going disposition.

@BlackBeltJones - my favorite DC character! Can’t wait to see him onscreen again.

@BlackBeltJones - that's one of the reasons I like Robin. He is such a great contrast to the bat. Making Robin/Dick dark character is a misuse of the character imo. That's more Damian's role.
GhostDog
GhostDog - 2/16/2022, 12:17 PM
@ChrisRed - exactly and it’s too soon for Damien.

Dick brings things out of Bruce he never thought were there.

It's crazy how we haven't had a live action Batman and Robin since... Batman & Robin. It's like WB has been scared to do it since.

In terms of who should play Robin... Idk. Maybe Noah Schnapp? That kid can srsly act. Then again, by the time The Batman 2 starts filming, he'll be too old.

People forgetting that Robin was in TDKR. His real name was Robin and his fake name was Blake or something.

Man that was terrible.

Any actor taking on the role of Batman better be ready to share the screen with the boy wonder. It was disappointing when I saw the Dark Knight Rises and Nolan didn’t utilize JGL to become Robin in that movie. Instead they teased it in a way that annoyed me like a post credit tease that doesn’t lead to something new.

Am I alone in thinking it would be cool to see a young Dick Grayson as a Wayne Manor ward, but without the Robin stuff? At least at first. Contrive some reason why this loner Bruce Wayne brings in this kid, and show how helping Dick deal with the loss of his parents helps pull Bruce back from his more severe tendencies and forces Bruce to grow up?

I mean: this is basically what Batman Forever was aiming for, but Chris O'Donnell was like 30 so it didn't work at all.

Sure, you can have the kid suit up in a sequel, but he can have the dynamic with Bruce (and even know about his secret identity) without going full Robin.

@Spock0Clock - Alfred trying his damndest not to let Bruce’s darkened deep into Dick. His second chance to get it right, if he feels he failed Bruce and helping him remedy his pain.

In the f***-up Gotham that Reeves seems to be building, a Robin would certainly be something interesting. I'm guessing we would have an slightly more mature Batman seen a reflexion of his younger self in an orphan kid, and strugglin to assert an adult, healthy role model for the child before his secret would be revealed, but torn apart by the sheer violence the city can enforce upon an innocent child.

It would be interesting to explore how he would pivot between the idea of giving the child proper attention while knowing he is eventually going to send him into the real world as a naive young adult, while the other option is to train him and teach him the darkness of the world, at the risk of destroying anything beautiful about the remaining innocence of a needy child who just lost his family and is dealing with a growing darkness of his own because of that.

Reeves, if you are reading this, feel free to contact me!

Someday I hope to see another film Batman that isn’t super grim and gritty and yet also not campy, and you can the. Use Robin without the point being “Just wait until the Joker brutally murders him and torments Batman even more!”

MeAreLegend - 2/16/2022, 10:32 AM
@Chewtoy - I personally would be interested to see a Batman that isn’t trying to be too grounded. I obviously wouldn’t want to have Bats fighting aliens but I also don’t want yet another Nolan-ish trilogy

Well since Reeve keeps going on about his film being ‘grounded’ I’m not holding my breathe for Robin showing up in any sequels

If they are so afraid to have a young man paired with Batman because of past media homosexual undertones like the Fredric Wertham thing many years ago(which seems ridiculous in 2022) then do Carrie Kelly. I’d be perfectly fine with her Robin.
Spock0Clock
Spock0Clock - 2/16/2022, 9:56 AM
@krayzeman - (I'm not sure it makes it better if you can read Batman's relationship with an underage kid as having sexual undertones if it's a girl. It's just a different kind of not good.)

Peter Parker was 15 when he became Spider-Man, a 13-year old street smart Robin who's living on the streets looking for his parents' killer when Batman finds him could be cool. Plus, Dick's family ties into the Court of Owls if they want to use that storyline in the sequel.

My personal thought is that Batman needs to be in his mid to late-20's (when Bruce's anger blinds any common sense) when you introduce Grayson, then early to mid-30's (when Bruce is stubborn in his ways and confident that he can't do any wrong) when Grayson leaves and Bruce takes in Jason Todd. Then Jason dies after only 2 or 3 years, leading Bruce to his mid to late 30's when he very tentatively takes in Tim Drake and Bruce has the wisdom of being Batman for 20 years and understands the risks. You can then play off Damian as the result of a booty call with Talia after Jason's death.

The dynamic duo kicking ass is a LONG overdue sight to see. I love in New Frontier how having Robin around softend Batman and even gave him a lower key costume.
