So we know the villains... Now what?

After months of speculation, the villains for "The Dark Knight Rises" are revealed. Now what is the next step in the never ending rumor mill?

After what seemed like an eternity of false leads, rumors, fake scripts, and speculation, at least two of the villains from the third Bat-film have been revealed. Tom Hardy will step into Bane's massive shoes, while Ann Hathaway will squeeze into Catwoman's costume, but where do things go from here?

Though we know the two key villains, I have the feeling that there are still plenty of roles to be filled in this film. Of course, now the story theories will start flying. Will Catwoman be used as a villain or hero? Will Bane be the central villain or just the muscle for someone else? Will this follow the "Knightfall" storyline? Even though the villain speculation is done, I think the rumors will only increase as the film grows closer to its release date.

First we'll look at Bane. I'm glad he's being used as a villain again seeing how poorly he was treated in "Batman and Robin" (he almost made the list in my previous article, "Ten Great Comic Book Villains Ruined By Hollywood"). I think that if anyone can do him justice, it's Nolan. Bane can easily be just the "muscle" for another bad guy. Bane has the potential to be the central villain. In the comics, Bane is not only physically imposing, but is extremely ruthless and intelligent making him a worthy foe for the Batman.

As for the story, I don't think this will follow the "Knightfall" storyline, or if it does it will be very loosely. In "Knightfall," Bane comes to Gotham and ends up breaking Batman's back, leading Jean-Paul Valley to take over the cape and cowl while Bats recuperates. Frankly, while it's an epic story, I can't see their cramming it all into one movie. Bane's motivations in this movie can be the same as in "Knightfall": He comes to Gotham to make a name for himself, and which better way to do so than break the Bat? This would lead to an interesting cat-and-mouse game among Bane and Bats while also avoiding the cliche "Mobster hires Bane to take out Batman" plot.

As for Catwoman, there are many different avenues they could take her. They could have her as a cat burglar following Batman's example of theatricality, or as a new vigilante coming to help clean up the streets of Gotham. I think they'll go with Catwoman being in a gray area, helping Batman at some points but also hindering in others., Ultimately she'll be doing whatever is needed to achieve her own goals.

The big thing I'm curious about is the costuming. TDK made it clear that Nolan isn't above tweaking his character's looks in order to make them fit into his Bat-world. I think we'll see more of that in this film. With Catwoman, I'll be surprised if she is wearing the leather catsuit. I can see her movie costume being something like in Frank Miller's "Batman: Year One," something she threw together at home from clothes she found lying around.

As for Bane, I can see his keeping the face mask, though possibly making it more of a ski mask or helmet type. Of course, when you think Bane, you think of his dependency on the drug Venom. This has been something I've been wondering how they will handle in the movie. I don't think Venom will be like in the comics where Bane takes it and instantly grows muscles mas--maybe just more like a steroid or performance enhancer that makes him stronger for a short period of time. Or the movie will omit Venom entirely and just have Bane as a physically imposing villain out to get Batman.

As you can see, this is just a bit of speculation right here. I'm sure that as time goes on more and more rumors will pop up, especially as more secondary characters are revealed Vicki Vale, Sarah Essen, and Black Mask could still very well be in this movie. However, much like Nolan's previous movies, I'm sure we won't really know what the movie will be until July 20, 2012.

Ok Venom hits the streets? Face wrap Bane like in The Batman? Venom used like it was in Arkham Asylum? Who knows maybe a whole new take on spanish/British/Australian Bane.

If they resurrect Ra's Al Ghul they will take away the realness of the film and I don't think Nolan will do that. It would've been good to bring him back but they would've had to explain the Lazarus Pit in the first movie so I don't think Nolan will bring him back.

I'm tired of people using the word ''real'' in ref. to batman. He is a comic book character. Also i hope nolan goes with the knightfall storyline.

@dellamorte: I agree with you on Bane - READ ON.

I hope you’ll all indulge me for a bit with my possible plot and character takes:

Selina Kyle/Catwoman – Honestly, I’ve heard so many takes on where she fits into the story that I think she’ll be the biggest surprise. Nolan and Goyer could go in any direction with her and make it work: another citizen who goes vigilante, or pseudo-criminal, or whatever. My gut tells me that Nolan will have her straddling the line of vigilante/criminal – perhaps someone who is like Bruce, but struggles with her limits even more than Bruce did in TDK, so Bruce becomes somewhat of a mentor.

Hugo Strange – Assume he’s in the movie; if he’s not, then ignore this section. I see an early scene in TDKR where Jonathan Crane is in Arkham, still being treated after being dosed with fear toxin by Batman in Batman Begins. Enter Hugo Strange: Crane’s psychologist. In treating Crane, Strange becomes fascinated with the Batman and takes it upon himself to figure out Batman’s identity and bring him down, just for the hell of it (and because he is certifiably nuts). Just as Crane teamed up with Ra’s, Strange will most likely do this by teaming up with Bane. IF Strange is in the movie, I think his role is limited. Bane is definitely the spotlight villain for this film.

Bane – After giving it some thought, I like this choice. I originally wanted a Black Mask/Deadshot pairing, but Bane really does work. Knightfall is the seminal material for this role, but I see a cool twist here based on news that TDKR might be shot in Romania. The opening scene of TDKR goes back a few years, around the same time Bruce was in prison in Bhutan. The scene is a prison in Eastern Europe (I know Bane is from Latin America, but let’s face it – Hardy doesn’t look Hispanic). Since Ducard likes hanging around prisons so much (seriously, how did he decide to visit a prison in Bhutan to recruit Bruce?), he approaches a young Bane with the same proposition he gave to Bruce. Fast forward to TDKR present day, and Bane is Ra’s heir to lead the League of Shadows. NOTE: IF Nolan decides to nix the League, Bane could just be carrying on Ra’s work by himself. I’m not sure if Venom is in the story: it seems too abnormal to be in Nolan’s world, and having it be a second-generation fear toxin is trite. But I digress…

Bane really does bring the best elements of Ra’s and Joker in one villain: he is both physically and intellectually imposing and can go toe-to-toe with Batman. The Joker really got into Bruce’s head and caused him to re-examine his perspectives and modus operandi as a hero, and let’s not forget that Ra’s did do a good job of kicking Bruce’s ass throughout Batman Begins. So Bane is the best of both worlds, and in my mind becomes the reason to bring Catwoman in as Batman’s ally or protégé.

Thoughts?

I love the broader shoulders. Also, of EVERY film Batman, Affleck's own looks like a BEAST! Definitely the Batman I can see bringing fear into the hearts of criminals.

The cowls are obviously different...the ears are pointier, the base of the cowl is flush with the cape, the brow is more pronounced, and the nose has NOSTRILS!!! Did you write the article w/o looking clearly? What's the resolution on your phone?
