THE BATMAN: Taking A Closer Look At The Batmobile And Robert Pattinson's Batsuit

Earlier today, director Matt Reeves gave fans a first official glimpse of the sleek, stripped-down Batmobile that'll feature in The Batman, along with a full body shot of Robert Pattinson in the Batsuit...

We'd all been clamoring for a glimpse of the Batmobile ever since Matt Reeves unveiled that test footage of Robert Pattinson as The Batman last month, and the director has now made Bat-fans' day with some stunning official shots of The Dark Knight and his iconic ride.

It's immediately clear from even a brief glance that this is going to be a far less stylized take on The Caped Crusader's vehicle than we've seen in previous big-screen outings, and actually has more in common with the modified 1955 Ford Lincoln Futura from the '60s TV series with Adam West than, say, the militarized tank from Christopher Nolan's trilogy.

The photos also gave us a our first full look at Pattinson in his Batsuit, and while he's not featured as prominently as the car, we can make out a few new details.

Have a scroll through the slideshow below as we take a closer look.

The Batmobile #1

Yes, this version of the Batmobile is definitely... a car!

Some fans were a little put off by this more realistic design because the past few iterations of the vehicle were so souped-up and borderline cartoonish, but, as Batman purists will no doubt be aware, The Caped Crusader has driven similarly minimalist Batmobiles in the comics many times. This particular take is reminiscent of Neal Adams' design from the '70s and '80s.

The Batmobile #2

This next pic gives us a better look at Bats (Robert Pattison) standing beside the car.

The test footage did provide a detailed look at certain parts of the armor and we have seen those set photos of the stunt double, but this is the first time we've seen a full shot of Pattinson in the costume.

The reaction to this has been mostly positive, although some fans were hoping that this incarnation of the Batsuit would differentiate itself a little more from previous movie versions. It might have been cool to see those angular ears from the hero's earliest appearances, at least.

The Batmobile #3

A closer look at what will likely turn out to be a homemade engine.

This is further evidence that Pattison's take on the character will favor function over fashion, as it appears as if Bruce Wayne has basically just added a few bells and whistles to a standard muscle car. This is the Batmobile, though, so don't be surprised if it's hiding a few surprises for the bad guys somewhere.

What did you guys make of this first look at the Batmobile? Were you hoping for something different? Let us know in the comments.

They are probably going for a realistic and grounded look similar to Nolan, not cheap. I think this Batman might have white eyes too because of the lens on the mask. Fingers crossed we get the white eyes!

It looks like some of the cars I've seen on grand theft auto, ironically not the batmobile from there.

The suit looks much better from a far except the pants. I think he might be wearing hockey pants

@MyCoolYoung - looks like combat military pants

@BlackBeltJones -

I was just joking about the hockey pants part lol I just don't like the look of them.

I dont even know how to describe it, puffy? They'll probably do some post production magic on them(I hope) but I like the suit and batmobile overall

@MyCoolYoung - in the photos above they don’t really seem to fit with the rest of the suit. Puffy is the ideal word. Not very for fitting.

The suit looks good but at the same time a little odd in the upper arm area. Looks super heavy on too, so I wonder how much of an agile Bats we are gonna get.

I like the car. Looks mean.

I guess this puts the theory to bed that the Bat Suit we saw is just the "prototype suit".

The fact that the batmobile is just a regular modified car, the batcycle is just a regular modified bike, and the batsuit is just an amalgamation of regular sports padding etc. clearly indicates that's it's part of a deliberate design aesthetic for the whole movie

I think the suit looks better in these images. Looking more like this Bermejo statue.

@JustALurker - Mostly just in the torso, belt and pants area from the third photo. I wrote this just so I could justify saying pants area.

I'll reserve judgement for the first trailer, it's hard to love it when my favorite batmobile are Burtons and Nolans, and also Batman Forevers lol

I always caution people judging costumes from stunt based set photos but based on that forward shot of the Batman he is looking even more awkwardly put together
OmegaDaGrodd
OmegaDaGrodd - 3/4/2020, 2:35 PM
Like, I'm fully prepared for this movie to somehow send us back in time to a Batman who can't move for shit and I think they're *intentionally* making that a plot point this time. Alarming.
GhostDog
GhostDog - 3/4/2020, 2:37 PM
@OmegaDaGrodd - reminds me of how stiff the Begins suit had Bale looking. Obviously, he needed to be faster in the sequel so Kevlar plates over titanium dipped tri-weave fibers...
